I thought it was going to be a new spinoff debate in 2012 titled "Carter Country is not a spinoff of BarneyMiller"

LOL

I always found it fascinating that after a 2 season run, with only 44 episodes, that this show was successfully sold to stations as a weekday strip! My local ABC and NBC stations bought it and I saw the episodes many times over for about 2 years continuously. Of course, I barely remember any of them now except for the scene where Roy was frying chicken in the courthouse and Ken's character made the remark he couldn't stand fried chicken and didn't like watermelon either. And of course the mayor's "Handle it, Roy. Handle it Handle it!"

TV one should try adding this show to the schedule one day.

My local affiliates reran the show for years too. It was probably because I lived in the South. I always enjoyed the show. I wished it would have lasted longer.

I do not understand how someone could like a show, then rating drop moved on a Tuesday unless it clashes on something they being watching and prefer on the same time.

That's what the posted stated, Barney Miller aired right before Carter Country and then did well enough it be a lead in on Saturday nights and bombed

Good Times...........#53
Jeffersons.............#56
Maude..................#78

What the hell was so interesting about this show in the 1977-78 season?-lol I seen one episode and don't remember being impressed at all

Which book is that? I'd be interested in a book that lists the ratings of every network tv series of every season. I know the Readers Digest yearly almanac would do that, but only for the latest season each year.

Please let me know. Thanks!

It's doesn't list the ratings for every season, just the blacks shows that aired from 1975 to 1983

The book is Blacks and White TV by Fred MacDonald

It was definitely because of the Times because I didn't even understand the title of the show because I was too young in 1977

It may sound ridiculous, and maybe it is, but I'll bet the fact that it was such a change of pace for the show's star, Victor French, that many viewers tuned in out of curiosity. French was a traditionally dramatic actor, mostly appearing in Western dramas, although his characters often did provide some comic relief, but in more serious situations.

So it was really a fish out of water case when French left his then-current supporting role of Mr. Edwards on the family western drama "Little House on the Prairie" for a leading role in a present day sitcom. It was a real throw for him to make such a dramatic change in character, that I would imagine his LHOTP fans prob tuned in out of curiosity. When the series was canceled, Michael Landon (Executive Producer of LHOTP as well as its star and French's personal friend) asked him back as a regular cast member, and he remained with that series until its demise (even remaining with the show when Landon himself left to focus more behind the camera).

He was also an avid director, and directed several episodes of LHOTP as well as its sister series (not a spinoff but based on a plotline of one of LHOTP's episodes) "Father Murphy", and later "Highway to Heaven" (in which he also co-starred once again with Landon).

Maybe I need to see more because I;m still stunned that Carter Country had more viewers than the Norman Lear classic sitcoms
