I didn't know it was on ABC. I thought it was on CBS, considering that it spun off the Andy Griffith Show (CBS) and had a somewhat of a cross over with The Dick Van Dkye Show (CBS, Buddy was on an ep in the 11 season).

Make Room for Daddy started on ABC in 1953 and remained there for 4 years, the first 3 with Jean Hagen playing his wife, Margaret, and another year after she left with Danny playing a widower. Late that 4th season on ABC, Danny Williams met Kathy O'Hara, a nurse with a daughter, Linda, and the characters married over that summer. In 1957, Make Room for Daddy moved to CBS, where it was renamed The Danny Thomas Show, and Kathy was Danny's new wife and Linda his newly-adopted daughter. The Danny Thomas Show remained on CBS until 1964. In that last season, Buddy Sorrell made a guest appearance, and this guest appearance was included in The Dick Van Dyke Show Season 3 DVD set. Other shows spun off from The Danny Thomas Show included The Andy Griffith Show (on CBS) and The Joey Bishop Show (on NBC), which were each spun off from individual episodes of The Danny Thomas Show. |

Minor correction: the show had changed its title to The Danny Thomas Show in 1956 for its last ABC season. Danny Thomas later claimed he didn't put much stock in the Nielsens because his show finished one season at 100-something and the next season at #2. Well, that would be because in the previous season his show was moved against George Burns & Gracie Allen on Monday for the first few months and then shifted to Thursday to face two shows that had most of the audience divided between them, People's Choice and Climax. The next season he moved to CBS and inherited Lucy's timeslot. I'd say the numbers were probably pretty accurate.

It's a shame Make Room for Daddy hasn't been broadcasted frequently like some of the other 50s shows. I use to love watching it on Nick at Nite when I was a kid.

I love this show. It wasn't your typical sweet little 50's sitcom. The kids were smart alecks and the parents argued. I wish somebody would show it again.

I've really only seen 1 episode of this show and that was TAGS spinoff episode. It needs to be seen again.

Boy, is that the truth! I always think about little Linda whacking Rusty over the head with a game board. Rusty was my favorite when I was a kid. |

The Bill Dana Show was another spinoff. I'm hoping Me-TV decides to add this to its fall lineup--it's been out of circulation for too long. Of course, it will only be the CBS seasons, but I'll take it.
