Default Synapse Films at Work on a Restored Suspiria Blu-ray

Synapse Films has acquired the North American home-video rights to Dario Argento's 1977 classic horror film Suspiria, with an original soundtrack by European prog-rockers Goblin.

“I’ve been involved in the restoration and release of many films in my career, but SUSPIRIA has always eluded me, until now,” says Donald May, Jr., President of Synapse Films. “It’s one of my favorite horror films and I’m ecstatic that my business partner, Jerry Chandler, was able to negotiate with the rights holders to release this film. This is going to be an amazing projectfor us.”

Synapse Films will work closely with Technicolor Rome and Technicolor Los Angeles to create an all-new high-definition 2K scan from the original negative for a possible 2014-15 video release.

“It’s important to spend as much time as possible to create the definitive high-definition home video version for the fans,” May explains. “We’re going to take our time with this one.”

Synapse Films, Inc. is currently planning the extensive work on Suspiria in conjunction with Technicolor, utilizing both their Rome and Hollywood facilities.

Extras will be announced at a later date.

Default Popcorn is Getting the Special Edition Blu-ray Treatment

1991's Popcorn was one of those films with a killer ad campaign. The whole "Buy a Bag, Go Home in a Box!" tagline really spoke to the young version of me and made me say, "Hell yes, I need to see this." The film itself? It's good. Not great. But still entertaining enough to look back on with a smile. And I'm actually pretty excited to hear that Synapse Films is bringing the film to a special edition Blu-ray.

According to the company's Facebook page:

This release will give fans a brand-new 2K restoration of the film, taken directly from original vault materials. Supplementary materials from Michael Felsher’s Red Shirt Pictures will round out the exciting package. While the line-up of bonus materials has not yet been finalized, it will feature a retrospective documentary on the making of and legacy of Popcorn along with more extra features currently in the planning stages.

A Halloween 2014 release date is expected.

Written by Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Thing's Alan Ormsby, the film stars Jill Schoelen and concerns a group of film students who encounter a deranged, gruesome killer during a horror film festival.

When complete details come our way about this Blu-ray, we'll let you know, of course!

(Thanks JamesG!)

Default Severin to Release Patrick, Dead Kids & More on Blu-ray

Patrick, Dead Kids and Thirst – all considered "Ozploitation" horror films – are getting a Blu-ray release from Severin Films on March 11th. We'll let Severin do the talking here:

PATRICK: Just as Mark (NOT QUITE HOLLYWOOD) Hartley’s highly anticipated remake hits US theaters, Richard (PSYCHO 2) Franklin’s original Ozploitation classic is back… now in stunning HD: A comatose killer is seemingly unresponsive in a small private hospital. But when a hot new nurse begins to question his condition, Patrick will unleash a waking nightmare of psychokinetic carnage. Loaded with Extras including a recently discovered vintage interview with Franklin & the never before available in America Italian track with soundtrack by Goblin (SUSPIRIA, DAWN OF THE DEAD).

DEAD KIDS: Fangoria called it “One of the best horror movies you’ve never seen”: Michael Murphy (MANHATTAN), Dan Shor (WISE BLOOD) and Academy Award® winner Louise Fletcher (ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO’S NEST) star in this grisly saga of bizarre experiments, butchered teens, New Zealand doubling for suburban Illinois, and a killer in a Tor Johnson mask. This cult favorite – released in America as STRANGE BEHAVIOR – features a hypnotic score by Tangerine Dream, co-written by the Oscar®-winning director of CHICAGO, directed by the producer of TWO LANE BLACKTOP, now loaded with Extras and transferred in HD from the original negative for the first time ever.

THIRST: One of the most unique vampire movies of our time – is back like you’ve never seen it before: David Hemmings (BLOW-UP, DEEP RED) and Henry Silva (THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE) star as executives of an international blood-drinking cartel known as ‘The Brotherhood’. But when they abduct a descendant of Elizabeth Bathory to reboot her depraved legacy, she must escape before the corporation can expand their human ‘blood cow’ dairies and create a vampire master race. Now transferred in HD from the original negative for the first time ever anywhere!

And then look for…

Ozploitation Trailer Explosion: This is the ultimate collection of ‘Ozploitation’ trailers, packed with 65 ockers, knockers, pubes, tubes, comatose killers, outback chillers, high-octane disasters and kung fu masters, featuring such classics as: ALVIN PURPLE, WAKE IN FRIGHT, MAD DOG MORGAN, BARRY McKENZIE HOLDS HIS OWN, STUNT ROCK, STONE, FANTASM, ROAD GAMES, FELICITY , TURKEY SHOOT, BMX BANDITS, THE MAN FROM HONG KONG, DEAD END DRIVE-IN…and many more!

(Thanks, JamesG!)

Default Severin to Bring Us Video Nasties: The Definitive Guide

Prepare to be corrupted and depraved once more with this definitive guide to the Video Nasties phenomenon – one of the most extraordinary and scandalous eras in the history of British film.

For the first time ever on DVD, courtesy of Severin, trailers to all 72 films that fell foul of the Director of Public Prosecutions are featured with specially filmed intros for each title in a lavish three-disc collector's edition box-set, alongside a brand new documentary – Video Nasties: Moral Panic, Censorship and Videotape.

Disc One

The era-defining and critically acclaimed documentary VIDEO NASTIES: MORAL PANIC, CENSORSHIP AND VIDEOTAPE directed by Jake (Doghouse) West and produced by Marc Morris features interviews with filmmakers Neil Marshall (The Descent, Doomsday), Christopher Smith (Severance, Black Death) and MP Graham Bright as well as rare archive footage featuring James Ferman (director of the BBFC 1975-1999) & Mary Whitehouse. Taking in the explosion of home video, the erosion of civil liberties, the introduction of draconian censorship measures, hysterical press campaigns and the birth of many careers born in blood and videotape, West's documentary also reflects on the influence this peculiar era still exerts on us today.

Disc Two presents the 39 titles that were successfully prosecuted in UK courts and deemed liable to deprave and corrupt. These included: Absurd, Cannibal Holocaust, The Driller Killer, I Spit on Your Grave, Nightmares in a Damaged Brain, Snuff, and Zombie Flesh-Eaters.

Disc Three presents the 33 titles that were initially banned, but then subsequently acquitted and removed from the DPP's list. These included: Death Trap, Deep River Savages, The Evil Dead, Human Experiments, The Toolbox Murders and Zombie Creeping Flesh. Discs 2 and 3 can be viewed either as a non-stop trailer show, or with newly-filmed introductions from a wide range of acclaimed media academics and notable genre journalists.

Each disc is preceded by a brief introduction by cult horror presenter Emily Booth.

(Thanks JamesG!)

Cool Full Moon News

I went to the Chiller horror convention in NJ today, but I missed out on meeting Charles Band (I did meet Charlie Spradling) because he stepped out to prepare for his roadshow.

I talked to his employees who were working at his booth and asked about what's coming up at Full Moon. They told me that Band is planning on ditching physical media (DVDs, Blu-rays) for his newer material and that only "the classics" will get format releases. Everything new will be released exclusively on their Streaming website.

I asked what was going on w/ more HD re-masterings of their films and I was told that Band "is working on some" at the moment and that we should expect to see a complete collection of the Puppet Master films (1-10) on Blu-ray by the end of the year.

I also asked about future sequels to his works and they said that Band is working on a fifth Subspecies to be released on the streaming site.
