In typical Massacre Video fashion, Savage Vengeance will get a deluxe treatment! There will be a limited VHS and limited hardbox, along with the standard DVD. We are not doing pre-orders with Savage Vengeance. The VHS will go on sale at by the end of this month (an official release date will be posted soon) and the DVDs will go on sale when they are in hand in early April! Default “NEKROMANTIK” returns on 25th-anniversary DVD

Has it really been 25 years since NEKROMANTIK first shocked and awed the international horror scene? It has, and we’ve got the details on the movie’s first U.S. DVD edition, along with the cover art.

New disc producer/distributor Titan Video will release Jörg Buttgereit’s cult classic of corpse-porking art on a 25th-anniversary disc, available for pre-order soon. “Titan Video was founded with one principle in mind,” according to a company statement, “which became our philosophy: quality releases of horror, cult and exploitation films for fans and collectors alike, and we thought of no better way than to start our venture with a film like NEKROMANTIK.” The DVD will come with a two-sided cover insert (designs by Avery Frawley seen below); a third cover will front a special Signature Edition, limited to 100 copies, that Buttgereit will sign at New Jersey’s Chiller Theatre convention next month.

NEKROMANTIK will be presented in a new 1.33:1 digital transfer mastered from producer Manfred O. Jelinski’s 16mm internegative, in German with removable English subtitles. Special features include:

• Audio commentary by writer/director Buttgereit and co-scripter Franz Rodenkirchen

• Liner notes by Buttgereit and COMBAT SHOCK director Buddy Giovinazzo

• Featurette with outtakes and interviews with Buttgereit and Jelinski

• “The Making of NEKROMANTIK,” including behind-the-scenes footage

• Extensive gallery of over 100 stills from the collection of Buttgereit and Jelinski

• Buttgereit’s Super-8 short film HOT LOVE, which will also be issued on a limited-edition VHS

I've never seen it, but I know of Savage Vengeance's negative reputation. I'm curious to hear what Camille Keaton has to say about it since she distanced herself from the film (even going under a false name in the credits).

I recently picked up the cheap DVD made back in 2000 from someone's garage sale and I will get to it at some point.

Default Two ’70s “HOUSE”s of horror reopen on Blu-ray/DVD

A pair of cult-classic shriekers from the 1970s starring genre-vet actors have been restored for hi-def disc; read on for the details and a first look at the cover art.

Severin Films has announced that it will issue 1976’s THE HOUSE ON STRAW HILL and 1974’s THE HOUSE OF SEVEN CORPSES on Blu-ray/DVD combo packs June 11. STRAW HILL, a.k.a. TRAUMA and EXPOSÉ (and remade a few years back as STALKER by director Martin Kemp and producer Jonathan Sothcott), stars Udo Kier as a blocked writer who retreats to a rural house with his wife (Fiona Richmond) and a sexy secretary (BLOOD ON SATAN’S CLAW’s Linda Hayden) and attempts to write a new novel, but temptation, psychosis and violence rear their ugly heads instead. Banned in Britain for 30 years as a “video nasty” and remastered here in 16×9-enhanced 1.77:1 widescreen from the original camera negative (discovered in a British barn!), the film will be accompanied by commentary by writer/director James Kenelm Clarke and cast/crew interviews.

In SEVEN CORPSES, a movie crew makes the mistake of shooting a horror flick in an actual haunted house; John Carradine, John Ireland and Faith Domergue co-star. Transferred in 16×9-enhanced 1.85:1 widescreen from original vault materials, this one will come with commentary by co-producer Gary Kent and film historian Lars Nilsen, and an exclusive archive interview with Carradine. Retail prices are $29.95 each.

(Thanks JamesG!)

Default Linnea Quigley's Horror Workout Makes Its DVD Debut

Back in the '80s and early-'90s, Linnea Quigley ruled the horror scream queen scene. When she wasn't starring in films like Night of the Demons or Return of the Living Dead, she was doing oddball efforts like Linnea Quigley's Horror Workout. Some of us still own this on VHS, however, it's making its way to DVD for the first time. It's up for pre-sale now with copies shipping April 11th.

Directed by Kenneth J. Hall and starring Quigley, the workout tape was originally released in 1990 and features special effects from Cleve Hall (TV’s "Monster Man"). A campy, gory parody of the workout videos of the '80s, the film was created to capitalize on Quigley’s explosive popularity and rabid fan base. In it, Quigley teaches a bevy of big-haired, lingerie-clad beauties the proper way to tone and stretch, while a masked killer stalks them one by one. She also takes time out to show an army of out-of-shape, flesh-eating zombies the best ways to keep fit.

A first run Limited Edition of 1,000 units will come with a numbered 5x7 photo signed by Linnea Quigley and Kenneth J. Hall. This package includes a digital re-mastering of the original uncut version of the film, presented with a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio, as well as the following special features:

Audio Commentary with Director Kenneth J. Hall
New Retrospective Featurette with Cast & Crew including Stars Linnea Quigley, Cleave Hall, David Deceatou, Director Kenneth J. Hall and others!
Original Theatrical Trailer
Lobby Card personally autographed by Kenneth J. Hall and Linnea Quigley
Still Gallery

Criterion announces new “DEVIL’S BACKBONE” discs

Having already put out a sterling special edition of Guillermo del Toro’s CRONOS, The Criterion Collection will bring the director’s terrific 2001 ghost story THE DEVIL’S BACKBONE to DVD and Blu-ray in July.

Like his subsequent smash PAN’S LABYRINTH, THE DEVIL’S BACKBONE sees del Toro exploring the horrors of wartime though a supernatural prism and the eyes of a child—in this case a 10-year-old boy in an orphanage during the Spanish Civil War who confronts human evil and a lingering specter. Criterion’s Blu-ray and two-DVD set, streeting July 30, will present the movie in a new 2K digital film restoration in 1.85:1 widescreen, approved by del Toro and cinematographer Guillermo Navarro, with new English-subtitle translations, plus 5.1 Surround DTS-HD Master Audio on the Blu-ray. Special features include:

• Video introduction by del Toro from 2010

• New interviews with Del Toro about the process of creating the ghost Santi and the drawings and designs made in preparation for the film

• ¿QUÉ ES UN FANTASMA?, a 2004 making-of documentary

• “Spanish Gothic,” a 2010 interview with del Toro about the genre and its influence on his work

• Interactive director’s notebook, with del Toro’s drawings and handwritten notes, along with interviews with the filmmaker

• Four deleted scenes with optional commentary

• New featurette about the Spanish Civil War as evoked in the film

• Program comparing del Toro’s thumbnail sketches and Carlos Giménez’s storyboards with the final film

• Selected on-screen presentation of del Toro’s thumbnail sketches alongside the sections of the final film they represent (Blu-ray only)

• Trailer

• Booklet featuring an essay by critic Mark Kermode

Retail prices are $29.95 for the DVD set, $39.95 for the Blu-ray.

The Devil's Backbone is a great movie.

I haven't seen it in years.

Need to rent and watch again before I buy a Blu ray (especially at Criterion's prices).

Hope I still like it as much.

Default Hammer's 'Hands of the Ripper' Headed for Blu-ray

Synapse Films' collection of classic Hammer releases expands this summer with the U.S. Blu-ray debut of Peter Sasdy's 1971 supernatural serial killer thriller Hands of the Ripper. Considered one of Hammer's bloodiest productions (with the gore quotient upped to meet audiences' craving for more graphic horror), the film stars Angharad Rees as a young woman psychologically scarred from childhood by the knowledge that her father is none other than London's most notorious murderer, Jack the Ripper. As an adult, she becomes the prime suspect in a new series of brutal murders after a séance apparently unleashes the Ripper's demonic spirit to possess his daughter.

Synapse is presenting a fully-restored print of Ripper, uncut and in high definition. The Blu-ray/DVD combo pack includes the following special features:

The Devil’s Bloody Plaything: Possessed by Hands of the Ripper Featurette
Slaughter of Innocence: The Evolution of Hammer Gore Motion Still Gallery
U.S. Television Introduction
Original Theatrical Trailer and TV Spots
Hands of the Ripper Motion Still Gallery
Isolated Music & Effects Audio Track

The disc is slated for release on July 9th, with a price tag of $29.95.

They soon discover it is haunted by a relentless blood- thirsty creature. When mutilated bodies start turning up, John must uncover the Reilly family’s dark secret to save his wife and child from the sadistic being.

In the quest to save souls, the Spanish Inquisition will stop at nothing and knows no boundaries for its evil. Under the direction of Torquemada (LANCE HENRIKSEN - “Alien,” “Pumpkinhead,” “Millennium”) the Grand Inquisitor of Spain, a young baker’s wife, Maria (RONA DE RICCI) is falsely accused of witchcraft and dragged before the inquisition and the Cardinal (OLIVER REED – “Gladiator,” “Three Musketeers”). Torquemada is enchanted by Maria’s beauty and subjects her and her husband Antonio (JONATHAN FULLER – “Castle Freak”) to heinous tortures hoping to prove that his own desires for her are a result of her magic, and that she has “bewitched him.” With the help of Esmerelda, Maria’s cellmate and confessed witch, Maria must find the power to save her husband Antonio from Torquemada’s ultimate machine of torture: the inevitable, razor sharp PENDULUM poised over the inescapable PIT of hell.

Default Grindhouse Releasing is Back!

Founded 17 years ago by Sage Stallone and Bob Murawski, Grindhouse Releasing is a beloved institution among horror and exploitation film fans, thanks to their lovingly restored releases of cult classics like Cannibal Holocaust, The Beyond, I Drink Your Blood, Pieces and many more. Grindhouse went on hiatus for a while, partially due to Stallone's death last year and Murawski's commitment to editing Oz the Great and Powerful for Sam Raimi. But the studio has finally resurfaced to announce a massive new slate of movie titles.

"After two years in the yellow brick prison of Oz, I am back full-time at Grindhouse Releasing, proudly continuing the important work that Sage and I began back in 1996," Murawski said in the announcement, in which he revealed a list of titles awaiting DVD, Blu-ray and theatrical releases – beginning with the psychedelic obscurity An American Hippie in Israel, which has gained Rocky Horror-like status in Tel Aviv and will see a new theatrical run in the US. Also, the twisted 1968 UK thriller Corruption, starring horror icon Peter Cushing, will premiere on DVD and Blu-ray September 10th (Cushing's 100th birthday), with theatrical screenings lined up in advance of that release as well. Here's the groovy trailer for that one:

To follow, Grindhouse also plans to release the following: Sergio Sollima's The Big Gundown; The Swimmer starring Burt Lancaster; Duke Mitchell's Gone with the Pope (a big hit at theatrical screenings in 2010) and S.F. Brownrigg's Scum of the Earth (a.k.a. Poor White Trash 2). Murawski also revealed that the entire catalog of Grindhouse titles will get the Blu-ray treatment over the next year.

(Thanks JamesG!)

Default “SNUFF” returns on Blu-ray; exclusive cover art

Four decades after it first scandalized audiences, the infamous horror/exploitation item SNUFF is returning in a big way to Blu-ray. Read on for the info and an exclusive look at one of the covers.

Blue Underground issues SNUFF on hi-def disc later this year (date to be announced), starting out in a limited-edition “blood-red” case available only with the first pressing. It will sport a reversible sleeve with two different covers (pictured below). Originally filmed in Argentina as SLAUGHTER by Michael and Roberta Findlay, the movie found its notoriety (including many protests—some of them staged) when distributor Allan Shackleton added footage of one of the actresses allegedly being dismembered for real at the end of the shoot, and released it in 1976 under the new title. As opposed to Blue Underground’s previous SNUFF DVD, issued without extras in a “brown paper bag” case, this version will be fully loaded with special features, which will be revealed soon. Stay tuned for further details!
