Exclamation The Rabbit Died. Golf, Anyone?



The first-generation Golf, called the Rabbit in North America, was discontinued in 1984. For the 1985 model year, Volkswagen of America debuted the second-generation Golf - introduced in Europe a year earlier - with the Golf name. VW wanted to standardize model names globally.

The new Golf was bigger than its predecessor, but got better fuel economy because of its smoother shape. Pictured above is the European version of the five-door model.

If Golf isn't your game, how about Polo?



This the current-generation Volkswagen Polo - a little smaller than the Golf, and a very zippy, peppy car. This is a Japanese 2002 model.

The United States and Canada are just about the only countries on the planet where Volkswagen doesn't sell this car. If you're a North American VW nut, and you want to buy a Polo, visit Volkswagen of America's Web site and drop them a line expressing your interest in seeing the Polo come here.

Cool Early Polo

The original Polo was more angular in design - much like the old Rabbit/Golf 1 - and it even featured a variant (what the Europeans call a station wagon) version. This British version is a 1983 model.

Never heard of the VW Student? That's because was it was never for sale. It was one of Volkswagen's many concept cars.



The Student, shown at European auto shows in 1984, was a VW design exercise to create a microcar to sell in places like Amsterdam and Luxembourg City, where streets are about as narrow as an office building corridor. Meant to be smaller than the Polo, it nonetheless rode on Polo mechanicals and was powered by a Polo 1.1-liter engine. Though never produced, the Student was an important step in VW's microcar project.

Cool The Original Polo

And here is the original, first-generation, Volkswagen Polo hatchback. It only made it to America in the form of Matchbox and Corgi toys, so this shape may look familiar to some of you.



The VW Polo has been the company's entry-level car in Europe for over a quarter century. Though the Golf is a perennial bestseller in the Old Country, the Polo has many diehard fans as well.

I remember that, and while I normally don't go for microcars, I liked that one. And if you want one that was built by the Nazis and later rebuilt mostly for pure pleasure, here's the Volkswagen Thing.

What a wonderful Thing! This is a 1973 model.



The Thing, based on General Erwin Rommel's Kubelwagen jeep, was the first Volkswagen built in Mexico to be sold in the United States. A popular off-road utility vehicle south of the border, the Beetle-based Thing developed a cult following among Americans. Public demand inspired Volkswagen of America to import Mexican-built Things from VW's Puebla plant. Actor James Garner, who drove a Thing in a Dam 500 race, was one of its fans.

Unfortunately, its removable doors, its rough road manners, and its lack of safety features caused Volkswagen of America to stop selling it after two model years (1973 and 1974). The Thing is still loved by folks who admire its lack of pretentiousness, especially when compared to modern SUV's from the Ford Explorer to the Hummer H2 to VW's own Touraeg.

Talking Golf in the Country

Volkswagen later came up with a good idea to produce a car with the Thing's capabilities in an economical Golf package. The result was the Golf Country. Pictured below is a 1990 model.



The Golf Country, with its small size, its four-wheel-drive chassis, and its obviously high ground clearance, allowed its owners to have their cake and eat it too - it had all the attributes of an SUV in a simple economy hatchback sedan. It was the sensible choice for off-road aficiandos. I regret to say that the Golf Country has never been sold here.

And now, a Volkswagen we haven't covered yet.

Realizing that they lacked a small notchback sedan, Volkswagen decided that the best way to create one was to simply slap a trunk on its existing Golf/Rabbit hatchback. Voila! The Jetta was formed. Pictured below is a second-generation model.



While the Jetta (called by different names elsewhere) has sold respectfully on five other continents, here in North America it's VW's best seller. Americans and Canadians simply prefer cars with trunks over hatchbacks, and they also like affordable German cars. VW has never skimped on the Jetta's capabilties, though, and a sporty GLI version is also available. The 2006 Jetta goes on sale later this spring.

Smile A Different Kind of Volkswagen

It's not the Microbus - it's more like a Pontiac Montana, in fact - but it's a potent, capable wagon with seating for seven passengers and good cargo room. It's the Volkswagen Sharan.



I once saw a Sharan while cycling along Park Avenue in Manhattan. Which was astonishong, because VW, inexplicably, doesn't sell it here in the States or in Canada! And the Sharan I saw had New York license plates and everything. The fact that an American would go to extremes to buy one of these babies proves what a darn good wagon it is. Hopefully, VW of America will come to its senses and add this car to its lineup.

Actually, Volkswagen had a small nothcback sedan way back in the early 1960's. It's the rarely seen Type 3 Notchback.
