I absolutely don't get it!!!! Seasons 1 & 2 she was Scottish now there's so much emphasis in Season 3 on her British roots from watching these final season episodes. Her accent is even British sounding and she calls a television a "telly" in one of the season 3 episodes. |

Maybe the shows producer and writers thought more viewers could relate to a British character instead of a Scottish one. Britain and the USA have always had close ties. Although Cathy was said to be Scottish in seasons 1 and 2, the majority of viewers probably thought she was British.

It's all a part of Cathy's travels throughout the world. She probably has a few other accents up her sleeve as well.

Don't forget, there's even a bit of Zanzibar in our gal Cathy. Heck, she can break out into a Zambisi tribal dance at a moment's notice!

hmm maybe you're right. I guess anything British would be considered "groovy" back then. |

I think that it was merely a case of the writers forgetting their own continuity (often times for the sake of convinience, to make a script work). It happens quite often in sitcoms. I think they called Cathy British just to have an excuse to have Patty sing "I'm Henry The Eighth I Am" in Cathy's accent. It would have made less sense to have a Scottish lass sing a British pop song.

Very true. I never did like how they changed her character in the last season. I'm glad though that Duke herself, fans, or the writer remembered that Cathy was Scottish when they made that reunion TV-movie. |

You're right. I never noticed that before. The British invasion and Beatlemania occurred during the middle of the Patty Duke Show's run, so the producers simply changed Cathy nationality to make her more "hip." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Invasion |
