DYK . . . that A few months before John Wilkes Booth assassinated Lincoln, the president’s oldest son, Robert Todd Lincoln, stood on a train platform in Jersey City, New Jersey. A throng of passengers began to press the young man backwards, and he fell into the open space between the platform and a moving train. Suddenly, a hand reached out and pulled the president’s son to safety by the coat collar. The rescuer was Edwin Booth
brother of John Wilkes Booth!

Valentine's Day DYK...

Emperor Claudius II was at war against the Gauls when Bishop Valentine was around. But it was illegal for anyone to marry during Roman War Time and Valentine was imprisoned since he had performed secret weddings. Bishop Valentine gave letters to the prisoner's daughter signed "From Your Valentine".

That's what I heard...

David Hess, who is probably most known for playing Krug, one of the 3 villains in the 1972 horror film The Last House On The Left.(He also appeared in the 1977 Italian thriller Hitch-Hike, and the 1980 exploitationer House On The Edge Of The Park, among others) Hess was also an accomplished singer/songwriter, besides composing the score and providing songs for Last House, Hess wrote several songs for Elvis Presley including Sand Castles, and Come Along.. He wrote Your Hand Your Heart Your Love which was performed by Andy Williams. And wrote Speedy Gonzales which became a hit for Pat Boone.

Cool DYK

There is an apartment near the top of the Eiffel Tower.

Gustave Eiffel constructed the apt. for himself and for his personally invited elite guests. It wasn't available to the public. It featured warm wallpaper, soft chintz, wooden cabinets, and a grand piano.

It was recently made available for public viewing where guests can peer inside through a glass door. A mannequin of Gustave Eiffel sits inside.

There is a private suite inside Cinderella's Castle at Disney's Magic Kingdom. It is not available to the public and is available through contest entry and invite only.

Disney offers contests at certain times offering a family (up to 6 guests) for a chance to have a 5-night stay inside Cinderella's Royal Suite. Other guests include Disney VIPs (Kevin Jonas and his wife stayed there for their honeymoon) and Disney employees have been allowed to stay in the suite as a special bonus.

The suite is accessible by an elevator w/ a special key card and can hold up to 6 people.

The Suite contains a salon, bedchamber w/ 2 queen-sized beds, sitting room and bathroom all w/ exquisite furnishings. The bedroom and sitting room have an HDTV inside.

DYK...between 1718 and 2017, The New Orleans Mardi Gras was cancelled 13 times! But it did have a parade after Hurricane Katrina in 2006!

DYK that . . Mardi Gras has its roots in the Catholic faith. Carnival season marks the time after Advent and before Lent. Basically, Mardi Gras is getting all your sinning in before Ash Wednesday. It's illegal to ride on a parade float without wearing a mask. This was a law put in place to break down social barriers and allow everyone participating to associate with whomever they want. Fat Tuesday is an official state holiday in Alabama, (the home of the first Mardi Gras paradeand 2nd biggest current celebration), Florida, and parts of Louisiana. Although it’s not a state holiday in Texas, Galveston is home to one of the biggest celebrations in the country. Krewes plan the parades. They are clubs of a sort, with dues ranging from $20 to thousands of dollars annually. Krewes are also responsible for selecting carnival royalty
Official colors are Purple for Justice, Gold for Power, and Green for Faith.

That is the root for our Fat Tuesday celebrations as well. Even though Sweden broke away from the Catholic Church in the 16th century, some of the old traditions remained. So while our ancestors stopped to really care about the depressing lent as soon as they were allowed to do so, the more upbeat Fat Tuseday celebrations would survive and evolve. We don't really have carnevals though, but we stil have eating semla (a wheat bun with whipped cream, frosting sugar and almond paste) and doing ski trips as traditions to this day.

That would be because you were supposed to not have any fun during the lent (I believe that weddings were forbidden during lent as well).
