Straight To Hell '87 (A gang of bank robbers with a suitcase full of money go to the desert to hide out. After burying the loot, they find their way to a surreal town full of cowboys who drink an awful lot of coffee. The townspeople are hostile to the outsiders at first, but seem to accept them once they've killed a couple of people. After a while, a mysterious man named Dade arrives, who seems to have unpleasant business to settle with the robbers. A free-for-all shoot-em-up ensues.

A few musicians made up the cast: Courtney Love, Joe Strummer, Elvis Costello, the members of the Pogues including Shane MacGowan, Spider Stacy & James Fearnley. And Grace Jones.

Also featured: Xander Berkley, Sy Richardson, Dennis Hopper, Jim Jarmusch.)

My Degeneration '90 (An all girl punk band rises to fame, then sells out and becomes the spoke-people for the beef industry.

I like ultra low budget underground films, but this one just didn't work. And reading reviews of the film we weren't the only ones to find the band scenes distracting because it was obvious the actresses didn't know how to play instruments.

Sort of similar in plot, as far as an all female punk band rising to sudden fame, to the far superior 1982 film Ladies And Gentlemen The Fabulous Stains.)

Stranger Than Paradise '84 (New York City layabout Willie and his dopey sidekick, Eddie, get by on TV dinners and beer financed by haphazard card-sharking. Willie gets an unwelcome visit from his Hungarian teen cousin, Eva, but, just as he warms to her, she ditches him for her aunt in Cleveland. Impulsively, Willie and Eddie take a road trip to pick up Eva, after which they head out to find fortune and paradise in Florida -- or at least alleviation from their constant boredom.

John Lurie, Richard Edson, Eszter Balint

Written and directed by Jim Jarmusch)

Down By Law '86 (DJ Zack and pimp Jack end up in prison for being too laid-back to avoid being framed for crimes they didn't commit. They end up sharing a cell with eccentric Italian optimist Roberto, whose limited command of the English language is both entertaining and infuriating. More useful to them is the fact that Roberto knows an escape route.

John Lurie, Tom Waits, Roberto Benigni, Nicoletta Braschi, Billie Neal, Ellen Barkin

Written and directed by Jim Jarmusch)

Seventeen '83 (Before HOOP DREAMS, there was SEVENTEEN. Too controversial for PBS, which refused to broadcast it, this final film in the famous MIDDLETOWN series went on to win the first Grand Jury Prize for Documentary at the 1985 Sundance Film Festival. Directed by Joel DeMott and Jeff Kreines, SEVENTEEN is the unvarnished story of a group of seniors in their ultimate year at Muncie's Southside High School, hurtling toward maturity with a combination of joy, despair, and an aggravated sense of urgency. They also learn a great deal about life, both in and out of school, and not what school officials think they are teaching, along the way.

From Joel DeMott and Jeff Kreines, who had previously shot the documentary Demon Lover Diary which chronicled their experience working on the low budget horror film The Demon Lover.)
