I am not sure the two things are incompatible because Alex could recover in the long (or not all that long) term, but in the short term still need to take time off for his treatment and recovery. I can see Austin Rogers as the host of some show, but I'm not sure if he's right for Jeopardy. He might take attention away from the contestants. Although, I have always felt that Trebek himself was an interesting guy (i.e., the stories he tells about what he's done, where he's traveled, are interesting), sometimes more so than the contestants' stories.

I remember as a kid I heard about Michael Landon having living but it looks like it started in his pancreas and spread to his liver & lymph nodes.

Alex Trebek recalls being "on the floor writhing in pain" between Jeopardy! tapings due to his pancreatic cancer chemotherapy treatment

"This got really bad," the Jeopardy! host tells Jane Pauley on the upcoming edition of CBS Sunday Morning, where he also reveals he's been wearing a hairpiece. "I was on the floor writhing in pain," he says. "It went from a 3 to an 11. And I just couldn't believe, I didn't know what was happening. And it happened three or four times a day while we were taping. So, that was a little rough on me." Trebek adds: "I taped the show and then I made it to the dressing room on one occasion, just barely, before I writhed in pain and cried in pain. And I had 15 minutes before the next show. So, I got myself together and spasms of that kind usually last about 10 to 15 minutes. So, all right, here we go again: 'Anybody got any pain pills?' And I don't like taking pain pills. But I got through it. And the producers were very kind. They said, 'Look, if you don't wanna do the show, we'll just cancel taping.' I said, 'No. We're here. We're doing the shows.'"

Alex Trebek Reports Good Response to Chemotherapy in Cancer Battle
by Greg Evans
May 29, 2019

Alex Trebek might be on a winning streak of his own: His stage 4 pancreatic cancer is responding well to chemotherapy, the longtime "Jeopardy!" host reports.

In a People magazine cover story, Trebek says his doctors report he’s in “near remission” of the cancer that typically has a 9 percent survival rate.

It’s kind of mind-boggling,” Trebek, 78, tells People.

The doctors said they hadn’t seen this kind of positive result in their memory… some of the tumors have already shrunk by more than 50 percent.

Trebek also said that he will go through several more rounds of chemo, with the goal of full remission. He says that he cried when he got the good news, but “they were tears of joy, not tears of depression.

People also quotes Trebek about occasionally feeling weak, but how fan support provides relief. “I’ve got a couple million people out there who have expressed their good thoughts, their positive energy directed towards me and their prayers,” he says.

I told the doctors, this has to be more than just the chemo, and they agreed it could very well be an important part of this.
