TV AOL TV Talks To Louis C.K. about "Louie" Season Two and Joan Rivers' Cameo

"Louie" Season 2 Red Carpet Interview With Louis C.K. (VIDEO)
by Alex Moaba
posted Jun 21st 2011

The first season of "Louie" succeeded where many other stand-up driven shows have failed, seamlessly melding comedian Louis C.K.'s darkly hilarious worldview into one of the funniest sitcoms on TV.

Written, directed by and starring C.K. himself, "Louie" mixes the incisive perspective he's brought to his stand-up act for years with sitcom-style vignettes that portray the everyday absurdities of regular life.

AOL TV caught up with C.K. at his red carpet premiere event at Caroline's Comedy Club in New York to ask him a few questions about Season 2 of "Louie" (premieres Thurs., June 23, 10:30PM ET on FX).

So what will we expect from the second season that will be different from the first?

Well I think we've gotten better at shooting, I mean the show is better like it looks better.

The stories are a little more aggressive, more elaborate. We've gotten a little interested in how... just more s*it goes on.

How do you balance writing, directing, and acting in the show?

I don't. In some of the episodes I'm hoarse, like you can hear the frog in my throat cause I just got sick. We didn't shoot in order so I'm sick for Episode 3, and 8, and 12; something like that.

Sometimes I'm not shaven right, editing is the hardest because I realize all the s*it I did wrong. If it's wrong.. hopefully they don't cancel it.

Are you happy that you got the chance to tell Osama Bin Laden that he was a dick when you did?

You know it was fun to do that. That really happened to me, I had a dentist appt. where I got a lot of work done under the gas and I had that exact fantasy. It was very real to me.

Is it hard to maintain your cynicism in the wave of such success?

(laughs) No, it's still a hard life in a sh*itty world. So things are the same.

Is there anything you can tell the fans about the Joan Rivers cameo?

Um, she was great. I love Joan.

She'd said she'd do it and then she called me and said 'This script is very boring and I come off like an a**hole' and I'm like I don't... I mean I don't re-write for anybody.

The ideas that she had were funnier than mine, so she actually improved on it making it funnier than what it originally was.

Do you guys do much improv. at all on the set?

Not really because we shoot like a movie so you can't really mess that up.

When you have a single-cam loose documentary feel then you can do whatever. But I have one camera and I shoot like a movie so I have to be careful.

And I don't like improv. I want people to say what I wrote.

What do you think of this red carpet frenzy? Because it seems like something that you'd make fun of some time.

The red carpets are always silly because it's just people standing around and it's sort of dumb.

You know, I want to do whatever I can to help promote the show and lots of people depend on me to do that.

Do you talk about the role of New York as a sort of setting in a back-drop on your story?

New York is very landscape and I love showing it, yeah.

I love all the sh*itty parts of New York. We're not done yet showing the entire city.
