How come they started to "lay the (potential) groundwork" for a 12th season of Happy Days if its popularity was declining during the early 1980s? Maybe at first, they didn't know that the ratings for season 11 of HD were going to drop below 50th place. I understand them changing up the theme song and the opening credits, but my opinion is that, logically, the show shouldn't have had its original run go past the spring of 1984 (aside from the fact that 5 episodes were burned off during the summer).
Happy Days aired on ABC, not NBC.

Is it true that those episodes were originally written as the series finale? I guess having Richie and Ralph come back from the Army isn't a big enough event to wrap the series up with.

The series finale had no Ralph or Potsie and even Richie doesn't show up at the wedding until the last minute...and he's not even wearing a tie to his own sister's wedding!

Looking back, they bungled the series finale. Richie should have arrived early on and had scenes with Fonzie and Joanie. Richie could have talked about all the fights they had and now she's all grown up and getting married.

And they should have had Ralph and Potsie there As a result of these missteps, the finale isn't as satisfying as it could've been.

I think the "Welcome Home" episodes bring things full circle in a way the finale didn't.

Yeah, it's almost as if Ron Howard was rushed on set at the last minute or something. In fact, that's probably exactly what happened. I agree that Richie should have played a bigger part in the finale, since he was the show's original protagonist.

Maybe they felt that they didn't need to have Richie play a bigger part since they already tied-up the loose ends surrounding his character in "Welcome Home". Granted, they probably should've dealt more with Richie instead of the adoption plot involving Fonzie.

That whole adoption thing seemed contrived to me. All of a sudden, Fonzie wants to have a son? Aside from the season six episode where he bonded with his girlfriend's son, Fonzie was always single and swinging.

I would rather he met the woman of his dreams.

Welcome Home is the best thing about the final season. It’s the final episode Richie never got when he left (because Ron Howard unexpectedly left between seasons). It would have been a fine final episode.

Fonzie Moves Out bothers me because Howard and Marion are so insensitive to a man who views them as his surrogate parents.
