Unhappy Director Jonathan Demme ("Philadelphia", "Silence of the Lambs") 1944-2017

Jonathan Demme, best known as the director of Oscar-winning Silence of the Lambs, has died at the age of 73.

He first made his debut with the 1971 biker film Angels Hard as They Come, produced by B-movie legend Roger Corman, though his career launched in earnest during the 80s, thanks to a string of hits including Melvin and Howard, Swing Shift, and Something Wild.

During the 90s, Demme achieved back-to-back success with the critically-acclaimed releases of The Silence of the Lambs and Philadelphia.

Indiewire reports Demme passed away from esophageal cancer and complications from heart disease, according to a source close to the family.

He is survived by his wife, artist Joanne Howard, and their three children.

Truly sad.

He directed some fantastic movies- Something Wild, Melvin And Howard, Married To The Mob, and the early 70's women in prison flick Caged Heat.
