November 22, 1963. What a sad sad day this turned out to be.

This is where the eastern Interstate 86 abruptly ends, in Windsor, New York, although the highway itself continues as New York State Route 17. It will eventually connect with the New York State Thruway. Up ahead in this picture is the crossing of the Susquehanna River.

The western Interstate 86 is entirely in the state of Idaho. More on that later.

The Beatles' With the Beatles LP was released in Britain on this day in 1963, and the White Album was released in Britain on this day in 1968.

I'm starting with the eastern terminus of an even-numbered Interstate highway this time. This is a bird's-eye view of the eastern terminus of Interstate 94 (and the northeastern terminus of Interstate 69) in Port Huron, Michigan, after crossing over from Canada) on the Bluewater Bridge over the St. Clair River.

Here, going west (actually, north) in Chicago, Interstate 94 merges with Interstate 90 on the South Side. The expressway is called the Dan Ryan Expressway here.

Interstates 90 and 94 both follow the John F. Kennedy Expressway in Chicago's Northwest Side, then split off just above Montrose Avenue. I-90 heads toward O'Hare International Airport and on to Rockford, while I-94 heads west (north, actually!) to Milwaukee. That's the Chicago Transit Authority's O'Hare Blue Line train on the left, going down the Kennedy Expressway's median.

They meet again! Interstates 90 and 94! There are Abbott and Costello, Simon and Garfunkel, Woodward and Bernstein - but then there are I-90 and I-94, the dynamic duo, reuniting! And they have a straight man in the form of Interstate 39 to join them! I-90 and I-94 reunite going west, outside Madison, Wisconsin.

And so, at Tomah , Wisconsin, Interstates 90 and 94 part company a second (their buddy I-39 having left the act to head to Wausau). I-90 heads to Rochester, Minnesota and I-94 goes to the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul.

All right, I've made it clear that Interstate 94. heading west (and sometimes south and north) out of Port Huron, Michigan, runs concurrently with I-90 twice on its way out to the Plains. So why is this significant? Wait - we're coming to it!

This is the western terminus of Interstate 94 in Billings, Montana. It ends junctioning with . . . Interstate 90.

So, after running concurrently with I-90 twice on its way west, I-94 ends at the very highway it shared pavement with back in Illinois and Wisconsin. Those Interstate Highway System planners had a weird sense of humor.

"Exit 0"?

This image of Titanic shows the four large funnels, also known as stacks. The engines of the ship ventilated the smoke through these funnels. Three of them worked as smoke stacks, and one as an air vent.

And now . . . odd-numbered north-south interstates!

This is the southern terminus of Interstate 29 in Kansas City, Missouri.
