Thought 'Bob's Burgers' EP Loren Bouchard Reveals His Most Awkward Moment At Comic-Con

With hundreds of thousands of people attending San Diego Comic-Con every year and the July 20-24 event kicking off this week, The Hollywood Reporter chatted with the big names in television to discuss their favorite memories and tips for attending the annual event. THR’s Live Feed will talk Comic-Con with actors, writers and producers in the days leading up to the event so check back soon for interviews and the latest news on panels and screenings.

Loren Brouchard
Geek Cred: Bob's Burgers
Comic-Con panel: Bob's Burgers, Friday, 3-4 p.m., 23ABC

The Hollywood Reporter: What was your first time at Comic-Con like?

Loren Bouchard: I don’t know the year, but we went to promote Home Movies. At some point, they released a DVD and we went down and did a signing. I’ve been to promote Lucy, the Daughter of the Devil on Adult Swim a couple of times. That was kind of awkward. They had me as a panelist for new and upcoming shows. And then it took a long time for production to start, so the next year they had me on the same panel again. And I felt like you’re kind of a fraud if you’re on the new and upcoming show panel twice.

THR: What was the best thing a fan has ever said to you?

Bouchard: We got a lot of love from Home Movies fans when we were down there talking about that show. I think the best thing that somebody ever said to me was, “Home Movies got me through high school.” I think what they meant was emotionally, not like academically.

THR: What is the best story from your first Comic-Con that you can share?

Bouchard: I might have to think about that. This goes back to the question you were saying before. The thing that happens at Comic-Con that doesn’t happen anywhere else. Again, for someone in my business, in my job, is getting recognized. I probably fell in love with Comic-Con because at my first one, I was walking around and someone recognized me. And for a geeky-animator-type like myself, that is really nice and that will bring you back. That’ll bring you back.

THR: What was the most awkward thing that's happened during a panel?

Bouchard: Last year, maybe the most awkward thing wasn’t a question, but actually happened on our panel. H. Jon Benjamin pretended to quit on the panel. He was just doing a bit, but he pretended that he was quitting “Buzzwords” and he got up and he actually left the hall. I enjoyed it thoroughly, but it was also incredibly awkward.

THR: What would you stand in line for all day?

Bouchard: If Judd Apatow were to go to remake The Highlander, I would stand in line for that.

THR: How about your dream panel?

Bouchard: Dream panel would be the cast of Bob’s Burgers and Archer together. No wait, how about every show that Jon Benjamin has ever been a voice on. It comes together, and he’s in the middle and they all fan out around him. It would be a big panel.

THR: If you ran someone else's show, what would it look like?

Bouchard: Dexter, make him not a murderer. [Laughs.] ‘Cause it’s wrong to kill people. And he’s such a nice guy, you wanna like him. Dollhouse, I would make her not a prostitute. ‘Cause it’s sad, it’s rough, who wants a show about that? Archer, I would make him overweight.
