Default Trauma Center Shocker: Sedgwick OUT, Britton In

---Actor will leave series in big storyline

Hollywood Now has some upsetting news for fans of Gen-TV's "Trauma Center", especially those who are fond of Judd Nelson as Dr. Warton "Art" Adderson. Sources confirm to us that in an effort to keep the hit series fresh and relevant they are making some casting and creative changes. Now for the upsetting part; they have confirmed that the first of these changes is killing off Dr. Adderson and the exit of Nelson from the series. Nelson joined the series at the start of season two, taking his first series-regular role on TV since NBC's "Suddenly Susan" in the 1990's.

The decision to kill off this character was a difficult one, but a necessary one according to series executive producer David Aaman who says "Part of the story we have been telling since season 2 is about the difficult journey through recovery (from addiction), and we have been telling it through the eyes of Marjorie (played by MacKenzie Phillips)." "Our next evolution in this story is to show how Marjorie will cope with losing somebody who has been a source of strength for her and who helped get her through her most recent relapse." "For Marjorie having Art in her life was a huge reason for staying sober, and without his encouragement, she will have a difficult time of it."

For Mackenzie Phillips, who is a vocal and very public substance abuse survivor herself this story rings close to home and "is a very difficult, but very important step in telling Marjorie's story." "Marjorie's story is a story that many people go through, but it is one rarely ever explored on TV." For Nelson who was thoroughly enjoying the best reviews of his career and having a blast on the show, this exit is difficult to take and has left the actor feeling a little bitter about the way he was notified of his exit "I wasn't even given a warning ahead of time. I learned I would die by reading the script." The episode which features the demise of Art Adderson, one of the few totally virtuous characters on the show airs this Wednesday (June 28) on Gen-TV. And fans should expect a very upsetting death, Aaman says "Art isn't going to die in a peaceful way, it is going to be jolting and upsetting for the audience." Previewing the upsetting scene, Nelson says "essentially Art dies trying to help Marjorie rescue an addict friend and gets caught in the crossfires of a police drug bust and pays the ultimate price." "But before he dies he lingers for several episodes in a comatose state." This according to Phillips "is where Marjorie deals with her grief most profoundly, at his bedside begging him to survive and blaming herself."

But the exit of Nelson isn't the only creative change on the horizon for "Trauma Center" at all. Aaman says "we want to keep the series fresh and relevant so we will constantly be making changes." "Both in front of the camera and behind it." He says that perhaps the biggest change is going to be in the tone of the series which he says "will decidely get darker each season." "We found that it is difficult to do a show set in a trauma center without it having some realism to it." "we think that the dark storylines work for this show and that fans are responding to a show that is more realistic than most medical dramas are."

As for casting changes, he tells us that some others are possibly on the horizon and that the most pressing matter at this point is figuring out if Kyra Sedgwick who joined the cast last season as Dr. Anna Jefferies will be sticking around for season four, which debuts this fall. "Kyra is a very busy actress who is committed to other projects, (including fall drama series "Ten Days In The Valley" for ABC) and we just don't know if she'll be available for us in season four." "We'd love to have her, but we have no clue if she'll be free to film." But he assures us that "in any case we will not be killing Anna off, and will leave the door wide open for her return is we have to write her out." Aaman also says "Our cast changes won't only be people leaving, we also hope to expand the cast by adding additional characters, possibly a love interest for Schaech's character, Dr. Abrhams who he describes as "overdue for some love from a woman."

Casting Shock:

Kyra Sedgwick Exiting "Trauma Center", Connie Britton IN

Gen-TV is clearly very serious about keeping hit drama "Trauma Center" constantly changing and evolving even if it means losing popular cast members. Today, the network announces perhaps the most shocking cast change yet, Kyra Sedgwick who joined the series last season will exit the program at the completion of its currently airing third season, and will not return in season four, which is likely to debut in midseason.

However, series executive producer David Aaman says "Kyra has not been fired, and we are not killing her off." Instead the plan is that due to her work load on ABC's "Ten Days In The Valley", Sedgwick will exit the series but will return for season five in the event that "Ten Days In The Valley" is canceled. Aaman says "We truly love and respect Kyra Sedgwick and all the talent and grace she brings with her to set every day." "We have too much respect for her work to kill off her character." "She will simply leave the series canvas and will return when she is available to us."

To fill the huge void left by her exit, Gen-TV has cast veteran actress Connie Britton will join the series in season four as Dr. Claudette Ambrosia, a soft-spoken but brilliant neurosurgeon who is secretly battling her own brain cancer. Aaman says "We are thrilled to have Connie Britton join our cast, even though we know her stay with us is likely only temporary." She has signed a one-season contract with the show.

Lastly, Gen-TV is also announcing that acclaimed actress Ileana Douglas has landed a recurring role on the series in season four, playing a quirky doctor who will befriend Marjorie (Mackenzie Phillips).

Default Gen-TV Emmy Profile

Hollywood Insider Report:
Gen-TV Emmy Profile
"Selling Out & Every Other Weekend"

With just about a month until the 2017 Primetime Emmy Awards, Hollywood is in full campaigning mode and Gen-TV is no different. Hollywood Insider is going to spend the next month profiling some of the big contenders; from proven Emmy magnets like "VEEP" hoping to hang onto its awards success to bright and shiny newcomers like Gen-TV's "Selling Out" and "Every Other Weekend" hoping to find themselves named Emmy Winners in September.

On the comedy front, Gen-TV has found a surprising success this season with two freshmen comedies who broke into the Emmy race in grand style. "Selling Out" an absurd fantasy-comedy produced by and co-starring Tina Fey breaks into the race earning nine nominations; including "Outstanding Comedy Series", "Outstanding Writing-Comedy Series" and three nominations for "Outstanding Lead Actress-Comedy Series" for Fey, who plays Rachael, a downtrodden housewife transformed into a glamour queen thanks to the devil's work. Also earning nominations here are Fey's two co-stars, Octavia Spencer playing the devil in human form; and critically acclaimed scene stealer Rachel Dratch as Millie, sister to Fey's Rachael, who has her own hilarious and unexpected dealings with the devil.

Debuting as a mid-season replacement in January, after a highly rated test-episode aired in November 2016, "Selling Out" quickly became the most talked about comedy on TV, leaping into the upper-levels of the Neilsen Ratings and becoming one of the rare comedies on TV to garner both audience appreciation and critical acclaim. Each week as the episodic ratings came in, "Selling Out" defied expectation and grew from its massively successful premiere episode.

Gen-TV is banking on the combination of Tina Fey, high ratings and critical acclaim to garner some Emmy love in September, but "Selling Out" faces a tough road to claim that gold statue. The comedy races are crowded this year, and they face tough competitors like HBO's "VEEP", FX's "Atlanta" and ABC's "Black-ish". In the race for "Outstanding Comedy Series", "Selling Out" competes are those three series, plus ABC's "Modern Family" which earned five consecutive trophies in this race before "VEEP" claimed two trophies; Netflix's "Master of None" and "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt", HBO's "Silicon Valley", who have never won this category; the latter is competing for the fourth time while the former two compete for the second and third time respectively.

The final nominee here is Gen-TV's "Every Other Weekend", a freshmen comedy about a divorced family splitting custody of the children. This comedy though a solid performer was hardly a breakthrough ratings success, and just barely got renewed for a second season, despite no real critical acclaim. It earned a shocking four nominations across the main categories; including nods for Christina Applegate in "Outstanding Leading Actress-Comedy", Kyle Bornheimer in "Oustandingeading Actor-Comedy" and "Outstanding Comedy Series." If the Emmy success of this show is to be figured out, one would guess the appeal has something to do with subject matter that is universally appealing; dealing with family and coming of age. Though the series is technically about the children in the family, it is the four adult leads; nominated Christina Applegate and Kyle Bornheimer, and sadly snubbed Sarah Chalke and Peter Facinelli who are the driving forces of this series, turing in nuanced and memorable performances and creating characters who seem true to life despite writing that is at times outlandish. The one criticism this series has earned is that due to its narrative structure of splitting focus between storylines focused on the kids interacting with each set of parents (Mom; played by Chalke, and her tenant/love interest, played by Bornheimer) and dad and step-mom (played by Facinelli and Applegate) the series often feels like two different shows in one, with often starkly contrasting tones and themes.

The final verdict is that "Every Other Weekend" doesn't seem likely to win any of its four nominations, with stronger competition likely to overshadow it. On the other side, "Selling Out" is in a strong position to grab at least one victory, with Lead Actress being the most likely choice for the series to win for one of its three ladies, if they can defeat reigning champ Julia Louis-Dreyfuss of "Veep", hoping to grab her sixth consecutive win here. The other nominees in this category include Allison Janney ("Mom", CBS), who joins this category after winning twice in Supporting Actress, Tracee Ellis-Ross ("Black-Ish", ABC), the current Golden Globe Winner in this category hoping to claim Emmy gold on her second nomination; Pamela Adlon ("Better Things", FX) a critics favorite on a show little have seen, Ellie Kemper ("Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt", Netflix), hoping her second nod is the one that gets her Emmy gold, Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin ("Grace & Frankie", Netflix), Fonda earns her first nod for this role, while Tomlin has earned two previous nods for this role, and lastly, Patti Labelle is a contender for her work on Gen-TV's breakout hit "Mama Knows Best".

Bottom line, is that if Gen-TV wants a win it is likely to be for one of the three ladies from "Selling Out", with Octavia Spencer the hands down favorite of the three.

Default Mid-Season Drama In Trouble?

Gen-TV's upcoming fall drama "Pretty Big Lies" (currently slated to launch in midseason) just got a pretty huge boost of star power as it has landed four huge movie stars as it principal characters. Gen-TV Studios has confirmed today that they have signed Jennifer Garner, Hillary Swank, Halle Berry, and Jennifer Aniston to co-star in the limited-series soap opera about an upscale gated community in Los Angeles that is home to movie stars, athletes, TV stars, musicians and people from other high profile occupations that is rocked by scandal and murder.

Swank, recently starred in the Gen-TV crime drama "Code of Ethics" which was canceled after one season, her lucrative development deal with Gen-TV also ended, but she quickly accepted an offer to star on this program after reading the script provided to her by a Gen-TV executive. This will be the first time that Gen-TV has worked with Garner or Berry; Aniston previously co-starred on season one of "The Plain Land Murders."

Gen-TV's "Pretty Big Lies" In Big Trouble?
----Mini-Series In Creative Limbo?

Gen-TV Mini-Series "Pretty Big Lies" is supposed air in midseason but it looks like the series is in creative trouble after Gen-TV Executives rejected the scripts for its first three episodes. Sources tell us that Gen-TV has fired the writers responsible for creating the concept of the mini-series and are looking elsewhere for showrunners more in-line with their own vision of what the series might look like.

Hollywood Insider is also hearing that Gen-TV is looking to change out some of its cast also. We are hearing that both Hillary Swank and Jennifer Aniston may be on their way out, as Gen-TV is apparently looking to cast much bigger profile names, with Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Lawrence said to be on the networks wish list.

Only time will tell, but it looks like "Pretty Big Lies" may not make it to air by midseason.

Gen-TV Fall Castings:
--Freshmen Series Castings Announced Late

Gen-TV Network has finally gotten around to confirming casting details for several of its upcoming freshmen series. Gen-TV Vice President Eva Vargas confirmed them in a press release sent out today and said that additional casting details will be revealed later this week. In her statement, she said, “Despite rumors to the contrary Gen-TV hasn’t had a difficult time casting this season, we have simply decided to wait to reveal them until this week.”

The castings include some huge names returning to television such as Patrick Dempsey, Shay Mitchell, Lucy Hale and include some faces familiar to Gen-TV such as Annie Potts.

“Awakened”:

Gen-TV is confirming the cast for this freshmen comedy about a woman (Brit Morgan) who wakes up to discover she’s been in a coma for ten years and her husband (Dan Byrd) has remarried her sister (Shanae Grimes) and she now has a daughter who is a teenager (role still being cast). Annie Potts recurs as the mother of the two sisters.
During development, this series produced two separate pilots, one that was a drama and one that was a comedy, and the comedic one got the pick-up.

“Shortage”:
This stock market drama has completed casting its principal roles and the cast includes TV veterans Zachary Levi and Alexis Bledel, Shay Mitchell, Robert Buckley and Danielle Panabaker. Full character details will be released later this week.

“Bedroom Stories”:
This steamy nighttime soap opera will feature an anthology format with a different story and cast every week. Actors booked for this season include soap opera heavyweights Susan Lucci, Beth Ehlers, Paolo Seganti and TV favorites Heather Locklear, Grant Show, Vanessa Marcil, Pamela Anderson and James Denton.

“Malpractice”:
This legal drama has completed casting its main roles and the big news is that they have cast Patrick Dempsey in the lead role; he will make his return to series television starring as the morally centered owner of a law firm specializing in medical malpractice cases. His supporting cast includes Lucy Hale, Lorraine Toussaint, Lisa Raye McCoy, Raza Jaffrey, Bonnie Somerville, Joanna Garcia Swisher, Kevin Rahm and Matt Long.
“The Special Classroom:”
This unique children’s series will feature puppets from the Muppet workshop playing the special needs students of a special education classroom. The only live actor featured in the series will be Lucy Punch who will play the lovable and compassionate Ms. Lucy.

Additional castings will be revealed later this week.

Series Premiere of "Awakened" debuts to 10.4 million and 4.3 in demos, a solid start, but hardly a breakout success. "Shortage" debuts to soft numbers, 8.4 million/3.1, and settles for last place in its timeslot. While, "Bedroom Stories" is a total bust with 6.21/3.1 18-49.

8pm: Magic School (Season Premiere; New): 18.5 million/5.3 18-49

Monday, September 11:

Gen-TV's second night of the season was filled with ups and downs. On the positive side, "Hart of Family" returns with huge increases across the board over last fall's series premiere, and on-par with their season finale. "Homecourt Advantage" starring Nick Cannon debuts to strong numbers, while "Highly Functioning Adults" surprises with a very strong premiere, nearly doubling the estimated audience for that show.

On the negative side, "Say Uncle" starring John Stamos is an immediate let-down, drawing only 7.3 million/3.1 18-49. Legal drama "Malpractice" debuts to mild numbers, settling for last place in the 11pm timeslot.

8pm: Hart of Family (Season Premiere, New): 21.3 million/6.3 18-49
830: Homecourt Advantage (Series Premiere, New): 19.3 million/4.8 18-49

11pm: Malpractice (Series Premiere, New): 9.4 million/3.2 18-49
-----------

Tuesday, September 12:

Gen-TV Tuesday was a big success, with returning series "Deadly Visions" on-par with its typical performance, and losing only a moderate amount in demos. "The Special Classroom" may be the source of controversy among some educators, but it drew a larger audience, and did exceptional in demos.

The two big let-downs were "Cop City" down significantly from last fall, and "Spaced Out" which debuts to lower than expected numbers.

8pm: The Special Classroom (Series Premiere, New): 23.1 million/7.2 18-49
830: Fish Out Of Water (Series Premiere, New): 18.2 million/5.2 18-49

Classics TV not renewing Figure It Out revival

After almost 4 months of consideration, the team over at Classics TV has decided not to renew the Figure It Out revival.

The move, according to the president, was because of low ratings and also due to lack of interest.

Next year, says the president of Classics, we are taking a page from MeTV and doing our own version of The Summer Of Me, but under a different title of course.
