Yeah, I've never seen a second of HIMYM, but man, I remember the outrage after that aired.

Frankly, the last season was such a sh*t show, I'm surprised anything got accomplished. Cindy Williams had said she was done after S7, and then changed her mind about S8 after the rest of the cast had been notified and Betty Garrett and Michael McKean had made other commitments, and Penny had stated that she would not commit to being fully in each episode since she wanted time off. Then, Cindy only stayed for two episodes due to her pregnancy and other issues.

It was a sloppy, uneven season that was painful to watch. When the show becomes the Squiggy, Carmine, Frank, and Rhonda show, it's time to switch the channel.
What I think happened was that the network kept renewing the show at the last minute the last few seasons. I don't think any of the cast thought there was going to be an eighth season which is why Betty Garrett wasn't there and Michael McKean made only occasional appearances. Betty Garrett had already committed to a Broadway show when the call came that they were doing another year and she couldn't make the schedule work.

The episode where they explain Shirley has left was originally written to explain Betty Garrett's absence. Laverne finds a note left by Shirley explaining she's moving overseas to be with her military husband. The original script had Laverne's father finding a note from Edna explaining why she was leaving him. They eventually did deal with that plot point later in that final season but for most of the time that season Edna, was not mentioned.

Which episodes was he in?
I've been watching Season 8 on Logo, and it seems that he's been credited on most of the episodes including the ones that he's not in.

I watched season 8 but missed how Shirley met her husband. I caught The Note episode. Was it ever mentioned how Betty Garrett was written out of the show?
