THE HOLLYWOOD INSIDER
YTN CORPORATION NETWORKS AT THE TCA'S YTN CALL GIRLS - The creator says the network gave him the go-ahead to be even more controversial this season. Also in store this season: one of the girls starts a relationship with one of her clients, a wedding, and the death of a major character (which will happen at midseason, and end with a cliffhanger). TAKEN, TAKEN: Phoenix, and TAKEN: New Orleans - In one of the more unique panels, all three series in the franchise were together. Marianne Jean-Baptiste, star of TAKEN, announced she will leave sometime during the season and said, "I hope my character doesn't die in the process." She also says it was a personal decision and one that was not easy to make. The cast of TAKEN: Phoenix says they are excited about a three episode arc that will take them to Mexico. The entire cast of TAKEN: New Orleans was on stage, while the creator says the show is in the same vein as the two previous series', but it is also more gritty in nature. SECRET SERVICE - The creator and executive producer said the recent Secret Service prostitution scandal will be featured in the series. She says, "All of the cast will remain on board, but the repercussions will be felt with everyone." The upcoming election will also play a role in the second season: "The President will be campaigning, which shows some of the tougher times of the job. We are also exploring the possibility that the Secret Service may have to protect a new President later in the season." REBUILDING MY LIFE - Edward Smith will lose another family member who he is somewhat close with. We see those repercussions, as well as many flashbacks to before the accident. Edward also starts dating nearly a year after the accident, with an actress who has yet to be named. THREE BITCHES - The controversial title will NOT change. Eva Vargas says, "We've already heard the complaints, and the fact of the matter is, the name will not change. We've had controversy before, and we will have it in the future." SECRETS OF A SMALL TOWN - The creator says this is one of the shows you need to watch this season. Eva goes onto say, "It's one of the best shows that'll debut in January of 2013." The network expects to give it a prime timeslot on the schedule to be able to succeed. TCN (mini-panel) The network says it will continue to order numerous comedy pilots to "further our growth at a solid rate." Most, if not all, of the current comedies are expected to return for another season: "All six series are airing in the tough summer season. We are confident that nearly all of them may return for another season sometime in the next year." Will they ever cancel a series after only one season? "I'm sure that time will come one day, but we're hoping to hold it off for as long as possible. We believe in the product we have, and the only way to find an audience is to let it air for more than a season." As to the end of Being Average: "It will be a sad moment when the series finale finally airs. It helped us with our push towards original programming, and will have aired for a solid six seasons. We believe we have our foot in the door thanks to the cast and crew of Being Average, and we have to be thankful for that opportunity." If Suburbia is ready to be the tent-pole for the network with the absence of Being Average: "Suburbia has been tent-pole series for our network along with Being Average for the past two seasons. We've seen the series gain nearly two million viewers within a few months, which is extraordinary." DRAMA (mini-panel) The network is currently exploring original programming: "We've looked into original programming, but nothing has stuck out on paper just yet. We want to find a solid program that can guide our network to an audience." With slow declines each month, what are they doing to find an audience? "Starting a network is one of the hardest things to do. There are hundreds of channels and we have to try to cut into that already smaller audience. Viewers have to know we exist, and that is one of our primary goals right now." If they're happy with their worldwide acquired programming: "We are thrilled about the new programming we've brought in from around the world. It gives viewers a taste of what people in another country are watching."

TCN RENEWS TWO SERIES, CANCELS ONE Despite dipping to series lows this week, TCN has renewed two freshman comedies. Pittsburgh and Swimming Back to You have both been given a typical TCN second season order of 16 episodes. Walter Owens, President of TCN, said in a statement, "Pittsburgh and Swimming Back to You are key building blocks of our year-round original programming. We are thrilled to see that they will both be back for another season." TCN says an airdate has yet to be determined, but that "it'll be within the year." Only days after Owens publicly stated "We are confident that nearly all of them [their current summer comedies] may return for another season sometime in the next year", TCN has made its first original comedy cancellation. Diaper Wars, which had been given the role of establishing comedies in the 10pm hour for TCN, was cancelled by the network today. After sinking to a mere 207,000 viewers (the lowest ever for an original comedy), it was no surprise to see the cancellation news. In a statement from the network, Walter Owens said, "Diaper Wars was a solid concept that just never clicked with viewers. We will be sad to see it go, but its a decision that had to be made." The final four episodes of Diaper Wars will continue to air in its current timeslot: Tuesdays at 1030/930c. As for the other three comedies in the current lineup ("Assistants", "He Said, She Said", and "You and Me...and Them"), Owens says, "We are looking into renewal prospects for all three shows right now. We just have to figure out the details, and then we can move forward." |

"DRAMA" TO UNDERGO MAJOR REVAMP After a full seven months on the air, DRAMA is undergoing a major revamp by its owner, YTN Corporation. The network saw its lowest rated month yet in July with a mere 10,340 viewer average, which is down 77% from its launch audience in January. Even with the arrival of record breaking numbers for their British and Canadian imports, DRAMA has been unable to gain a solid audience. To offset the viewer loss, YTN Corporation is now taking a different route with the network. The biggest change will be the switch from all off-network drama programming to original documentary programming. The network plans on switching in mid-August, before other networks get their foothold on viewers for the fall. DRAMA has ordered three reality series, which will air on Monday nights in a block dubbed "MYSTERY MONDAYS ON DRAMA". The network will push all three series to find an audience by airing each episode at least three times a week. Here are the three new MYSTERY MONDAYS ON DRAMA series': Whodunit? - In this all new documentary series, viewers will be given clues to figure out who committed the "story of the week" murder. Along the way, the viewer learn about the victim to help them place pieces of the puzzle together. By the end of the episode, the murderer will be revealed, as well as an update on the case. Abducted - A new documentary series which follows the case of a missing person in the United States. In the Mind - This documentary series will look at an infamous serial killers from the past 75 years. Learn about their upbringing, education, job history, and more to find out what may have caused them to snap. In addition, the network is pushing towards crime drama movies. Each week, a different murder will occur in an "ORIGINAL MYSTERY MOVIE ON DRAMA". The original movies will air on Saturday nights at 9/8c, following encores of the original programming. If all goes according to plan, DRAMA will push towards more documentary series in the near future. The network says they have six more series in development and are looking at an October launch date. Diane Montegro, President of DRAMA, says, "This is a new push that'll get us established as a network. We had a vision, but had to shift course to go towards what viewers are looking for in today's market. We're hoping to give them the best programming DRAMA has to offer." New schedule will go into effect on Monday, August 13th Gone: Bomb Girls, Trapper John, M.D., St. Elsewhere, Police Story, Night Heat, and Chips New: Original Series and Movies CHANGES IN BOLD Weekday 12am until 8am - Paid Programming 8am - The Rockford Files 9pm - The Rockford Files 10am - Kojack 11am - Kojack 12pm - Barnaby Jones 1pm - Barnaby Jones 2pm - Dallas 3pm - Dallas 4pm - Dallas 5pm - Knots Landing 6pm - Knots Landing 7pm - Knots Landing 11pm - Quincy, M.E. Hollywood Now has been given exclusive rights to announce the following updates on the status of Gen-TV's hit drama "GONE". First off, the network and the studio have reached an agreement on the series contract. The show, currently in its fourth season has been renewed for four more seasons, meaning it will remain on Gen-TV through it's eighth season. One of the major sticking points in talks was the licensing fee that Gen-TV would pay the studio for the series. After much back and forth they have reached an agreement on a price point of 450,000 per episode starting in the fifth season. For the remainder of the currently airing fourth season, scheduled to finish production in August, the network is to pay a flat fee of 650,000 dollars. The fee will increase by 2% every season beginning in the sixth season. According to an insider at 20th Century FOX, the new contract also contains the following items which are unusual to a series negotiation. ----Scheduling: Gen-TV has agreed to give the series a permanent spot on the schedule and not move it again for the next three seasons. This is because according to Steven Bocho "It's notoriously difficult for any show to maintain it's audience after four seasons, but especially hard if the series is not given a regular spot on the network schedule and is moved around frequently." -----Production Changes: For a variety of reasons, the network is also being asked to and has agreed to change the production schedule. Series currently films 3 days a week (Wed, Thursday & Friday) and has dress rehearsals on Tuesdays, but will now tweak it's production model. Rehearsals will now be Monday and Tuesdays and filming will take place Wed and Thursday. Actors and Crew will have Friday's off. Lastly, and this is a big one, Steven Bocho is stepping down as Executive Producer of the series in season five. He is going to be replaced by Paul Johnson, a Associate Producer that has worked on the series since season two. Though Bocho created the series and pitched it to Gen-TV, he is exiting the program all-together due to "creative differences with Gen-TV and 20th Century Fox". Casting: Jerry O'Connell who left the series last season for personal reasons after appearing in ten episodes in season three will return in season five on a recurring basis for no more than fourteen episodes. This is to tie up loose ends that were left by his sudden departure. Syndication: It has been agreed that Gen-TV, 20th Century Fox an Bocho Productions will split syndication profits for this series on a 30/30/40 scale. Gen-TV and 20th Century will receive 30 percent with Bocho Productions getting 40% of the proceeds. "Gone" is set to enter national off-network syndication in 2014. Union Issues: After much back and forth, WGA and DGA have both withdrawn their requests for members of these unions to receive a portion of the back-end from the series. They issued a joint statement saying "After tense negotiations we have reached an impasse with the production studios and network of "Gone", but it was a long and brave fight. We will revisit this issue in the future." Production on the remainder of season four will resume on Monday, all actors and crew have been notified to return to work on that date. |

Gen-TV at the TCA's
Part 1 August 3, 2012 The Television Critics Association conference is held every year in the summer to give the networks a chance to showcase upcoming programming for television publications that will promote and review their work. Hopefully the exposure will allow coverage of series to give networks a leg-up in the ratings. During the third day of the cable section of the conference, Gen-TV had it's first stab of the season at showcasing it's programming. While undergoing some turmoil in the days and even hours prior to the festivities, including firing several top executives, Doug Bartel was joined on-stage by Tom Dalton, Jeremy Morton, Greg Mitchellson, Suzanne Stefan and Dana Gerard to discuss the networks FALL COMEDIES. Among the biggest surprises this fall is the sheer number of comedy series that Gen-TV is attempting to launch with six original comedies debuting in fall and six waiting in the wing for mid-season (three of which launched this summer). According to Bartel, "Comedy is a major priority for us this season. We've firmly established our dramatic brand and need to work on making our comedic brand just as strong and dominant." Dalton chipped in "We have several high profile sitcoms either ending or nearing their natural end and we must find a way to establish new series that can take their place and hopefully match or exceed their numbers." He acknowledges that Gen-TV has made some mistakes this past season "We let the situation with "Knocked Down" get out of hand. We never should have allowed Mandy Moore to leave. It has basically made us look like fools and was the first clear sign we had some trouble with our executive team." He was interrupted by Bartel who says "Obviously, given the recent headlines, we didn't work fast enough to correct those problems." "And that is something I regret not looking into sooner." They continued "We have hopes that our new comedies will prove to be as popular with viewers as they already are internally. Specifically we are very proud of "Getting There" and "Detective Mom" which we hope become mega-hits." At this point, the executives were joined on-stage by Suzanne Martin and Gerald Stevens, the Executive Producers of those two series respectively. Martin, a veteran is in charge of "Detective Mom" and says "The show has progressed nicely from it's initial pilot and really is something very special." "At the heart of the series is a story about a career wife who is sideswiped by the news that her cheating husband has filed for divorce." "Unlike other series, our show will focus on how she internally deals with these issues and how she decides to prevent others from feeling her pain, by becoming a Private Detective." 'We have a nice mix of comedy and human drama. Though we are promoting ourselves as a comedy, it's clear that this topic has some natural drama to it." After taking questions from critics she addressed the on-going casting issues that have plagued the series from the start. "We are lucky to have landed on Lennon Parham and David Walton, both tremendously talented performers who haven't had much luck in the sitcom department yet." She moved aside and gave the stage to Stevens, whose series "Getting There" focuses on a recently retired couple who enter couples therapy to repair their marriage after realizing that working all-day and seeing each other only on weekends is what kept their marriage together. He mentioned the talented cast of Shelley Long and Craig T. Nelson that he says "is magical to watch working together each and every day". In particular he said "Shelley Long is such an undervalued actress her incredible gift should be a national treasure." Bartel later mentioned some of the other fall comedies they are launching, such as the much-talked about and somewhat unanticipated "Mr. Write" which has had a lot of changes to it. "We are anxious to see what, if any traction the show can make, and hope that people respond to it." He also mentioned the "Boyfriends" spin-off "Husbands" which he still hasn't confirmed that cast of "We want it to be a surprise for viewers who tune into the first five episodes of Boyfriends to see who leaves the show and gets to move over to the new program. It will stun everybody." Dalton is asked about the fate of upcoming (maybe?) sitcom "Girlfriends" another spin-off of "Boyfriends" that is supposedly being held over until mid-season "We frankly felt it odd to launch both at the same time, and decided viewers would be very confused so until we see if Husbands is successful we are waiting on this one." Next, Dalton addressed the surprise success of this summer's sitcoms "Tag Team", "Turned Around" and "Inside Out", none of which anybody thought would amount to much. "Yes, these shows were left for summer because we didn't believe they would catch on in the fall, but they sure did catch fire in unexpected ways." All three series have been renewed and are likely to return at mid-season, if not sooner. The most surprising success is "Tag Team", a decided departure from the female driven programs that make up most of Gen-TV's schedule. This sitcom features two male leads and is partially set in the world of professional wrestling. Josh Meyers and Mike "The Miz" Mizzani co-star as brothers working together in the construction business after the older brother (Mizzani) is fired from his job as a professional wrestler. That sitcom has caught on in unexpected ways and became the networks highest rated original series to launch in the summer ever. Suzanne Stefans says "Turned Around" was on-the-bubble most of the summer, but was renewed simply because it did so strongly on a night without a proper lead-in or lead-out. "It was the lone ship on Sunday nights and it did very well holding onto it's demos week to week." "When it returns we expect it will be paired with at least one other comedy." Next up, Gen-TV turned to discussing their FALL DRAMAS, and started with the much anticipated "Detroit Homicide" which will launch in the fall after being dropped by YTN network. Bartel discusses the numerous changes being made to the series; including the more serialized nature it will take and the almost complete cast changes. "We had to put our stamp on it and believe this will mark a new chapter in it's life." Among the cast present for this panel were returning star Michael Imperiol and new additions Drea DeMatteo and Valerie Harper. DeMatteo talked about being reunited with former Sopranos co-star Imperiol and working with the legendary Valerie Harper who she says "Is known as a comedy icon but is equally formidable as a dramatic actress." "She blows me away every week." Bartel took the floor again to discuss the then just freshly resolved issues with "Gone" and said "We are very relieved to have that particular problem resolved and look forward to airing the series for the foreseeable future." He continued "We are sad to see Steven Bocho depart the series but look forward to seeing what fresh blood can bring to the series vision." Tomorrow Part 2 of Gen-TV at the TCA's will be printed and will showcase Gen-TV Reality, Gen-TV Daytime and other Gen-TV burning questions. |

Among the many topics that Gen-TV's Doug Bartel discussed with press at this year's TCA Press Tour was his networks erratic and oftentimes confusing scheduling, which includes airing original programming in the summer, oftentimes just weeks before the same series debut their fall season. "Yes, giving viewers a longer break between seasons seems to be an issue for us right now. We went overboard this season and will be looking into fixing that for next summer."
Some of the networks programming, including mega-hits "The Huntress", "Over My Head", "Knocked Down" and "The Enforcers" all had their season finales back in May and started airing new episodes weeks later in June and July. Now they have wrapped production for the summer and air their summer finales in two weeks, with new episodes returning to the network as soon as August 20th for some series. Bartel acknowledges "It's a lot to expect our viewers to keep up with and to embrace. We are working on a more realistic method." He proposes one solution may be "to simply air our programming in waves; say have a certain number of series that only air August to January; another set that only airs from January to May and a third that airs only in the summer." "It's obviously something that we have to work on, we run the risk of audiences growing fatigued by having to view their shows all year." "It's something we've seen with This Time Around and One of These Days, two shows that we just ran into the ground and now viewers have fled." Bartel's cohort Tom Dalton has another solution all together, "I say we air a fraction of the number of programs in the summer that we did this year and save the rest for fall and spring." "Launch maybe four shows in the summer, promote the hell out of them and then move on in the fall." "It will generate interest to give viewers a chance to miss some of our series." |

A minor correction from Gen-TV Studios: Gone is currently airing it's THIRD season and will return in the fall for it's FOURTH season. The above information was an article printed in Hollywood Now Magazine and it's sister website. They unfortunately did fact check and printed falsely that GONE was airing it's fourth season. It is airing it's THIRD season and will return this fall with it's fourth season. All of the contract details however were correct, with the exceptions that most of the new amendments take effect in season FOUR and not season five. |
