Oh No Unemployed Workers In Illinois Among Thousands Losing Compensation Checks

May 12, 2012 11:13 AM

Reporting David Roe

CHICAGO (WBBM) – More than 200,000 unemployed workers in Illinois and seven other states are losing their unemployment compensation checks this week.

That is because the federally extended program is ending. The program provides compensation for 20 weeks beyond the 79 weeks covered by state and federal programs, and goes into effect when a state’s unemployment rate is at least 10 percent higher than it was in at least one of the past three years. It ends when hiring improves.

Illinois’ unemployment rate was 8.8 percent in March, down from 9.1 percent in February. The Illinois jobless rate has fallen for seven consecutive months.

Sad story. I'm about to start Tier 1 now and know I have to be aggressive so i don't end up in this situation.

People are losing their unemployment benifits and busting their asses to find work and not having much luck. Yet the government and the politicians are all worked up over gay marriage. I have nothing against homosexuality, but the ecomomy and and getting people back to work is more important that gay rights IMHO.

Oh No

I feel so bad for all the unemployed losing compensation - I know all too well what it is like to be in that situation. At least I'm single with no kids - I don't have a family to care for like a lot of these people do. I hope and pray that this job thing nationwide gets better for everyone - FAST.

I can sorta relate. I no longer get my unemployment benifits, but I only got one part time job to get me through and it aint easy. Been looking for a second gig. Hopefully something comes up fast.

Same here - now that I'm done with my training at the paper (done during the week), I just get 10 hours, 5 each on Saturdays and Sundays, with a few additional hours on holidays or on the off chance if someone calls in sick during the week. So I'm still sending out my resume to find a job during the week.

That's good, is the job close to home?

I had a interview for a part-time job and the lady felt I was employable and wouldn't be there long and didn't give me the job-lol The job was 5 mins down the street.

I am single, no kids, and unemployed over 4 years in Illinois. Yep, it's pretty upsetting going on interviews knowing my Masters degree is going to eliminate me off the bat, then other things will as well. There are no jobs here in Illinois and the few there are have so much competition. Even the minimum wage jobs have 100 people applying. I have long exhausted my unemployment.

This shouldn't be happening to someone like me who played by the rules. I studied hard, went to college, got experience, then nothing. So now I apply for jobs I don't want where I have to endure an hour of stupid psych tests only to possibly get a second interview.

Don't get it unless it is required. Mine is in media communications and is not needed for most fields. I got it thinking it would help, but nope.

I am so sorry to hear that...and can totally relate (single, no kids) and my dry spell lasted nearly 2 1/2 years. I know all too well the toll numerous fruitless interviews can take. God bless you...

Thanks. Luckily I am starting to get interviews now but it is very hard. I'll just be glad when the interviews stop because I get a job.
