Default UPDATE: Drew Barrymoore to Gen-TV

The network announced a string of high profile, and "long-lasting" holding & development deals, here is the run-down on what is being called by insiders as " some of the most expensive line-up of holding deals in the last 15 years."

3. Big Name Talent:

Among the top thespians to sign to lurcative development deals this week are Julia Roberts; who signed a five million dollar development deal to allow her production company to develop programming for the network. Gen-TV has also signed a 2 million dollar development deal with Drew Barrymoore's Flower Films to develop films and scripted series for them.

Lastly, the network has signed holding deals with the following top-tier talent for future TV series productions:

----Drew Barrymoore has signed a 2.5 million dollar holding deal of her own as an actress. This is to develop a starring vehicle for the Golden Globe winner. This two-year deal is considered "a major get" as Barrymoore has been "majorly selective when it comes to television" says an insider.

.

Drew Barrymoore to produce and star in Gen-TV Pilot . The quirky and beloved actress who has made romantic comedies her game has signed a lucrative deal to produce and star in a Gen-TV pilot called "Happily Single", which focuses on a 30-something woman who despite her friends insistence that should be getting serious and thinking about marriage is pleasantly satisfied with being single. According to Barrymoore, "the concept is to show a confident, strong, vibrant woman who is fulfilled and emotionally in-balance, even without a man." "I want to show woman that you can live a wonderful life and don't have to be upset or angry about being single." "We are going to redefine the American woman's thought process on dating and marriage."

This pilot was ordered over a year ago and went through various production and casting delays. An early favorite for the role was Heather Graham, but the network decided she wasn't right for the project, and also because her most recent series "The Ex-In-Law" failed miserably. "She isn't a hot commodity right now. She has had a poor track record with series" notes an insider.

Project is being fast-tracked for a Fall 2013 launch date.

Default Our Town hits series low

Quote:
Gen-TV's newest soap opera, "Our Town" has been having a rough patch since it launched on April 12th. Nearly two weeks into it's run and it has already hit series lows. On Friday the series was watched by just 881,564 viewers and posted a very depressing .84 in the 18-49 demo. To put this in perspective, when the network canceled "Guiding Light" in 2009 it was getting nearly double these numbers. Network executives say they will stick by the troubled soap, but I expect them to change their tune.

Meanwhile, the network has also pushed back (again) the launch of their second original soap, "Day By Day", initially scheduled for a June launch, then pushed back to Fall, the network will now wait until January 2013 to launch the new soap. They say the reason is to give "Our Town" more time to develop a following.

"Our Town", the anticipated, but clearly not popular daytime soap opera from Gen-TV hit a new series low on Monday with a loss of nearly 100,000 viewers. It averaged 781,564 viewers on Monday's broadcast and in demos the erosion was even worse, with a nearly 5% decrease for a horrible -4.16 in the 18-49 group.

On Tuesday it got worse with 781,556 viewers and a -4.11 in the 18-49 demo.

With numbers like these it is just a matter of days before Gen-TV pulls the plug on this failed experiment to launch a soap. However, Brian Lonze maintains "We remain committed to turning Our Town into a massive hit."

To make improvements on the series, network has already issued some behind the scenes changes:

----Executive Producer Wendy Riche has been fired. She is being replaced by known veteran Christopher Goutman (As The World Turns). He takes over immediately and is being tasked with turning the show around, luring viewers to the set and keeping them there.

----Head Writer Claire Labaine has also been let-go, Lonze says "Although we respect Claire's vision and talent, her work is not translating to the audience and we respectfully tender her resignation." She is being replaced by former "Days of Our Lives" Head-Writer Marlene McPherson; who was recently fired from that show because of internal issues at NBC. She also takes over immediately. An insider says "Marlene and Christopher know full well that if numbers don't come up they will be canceled within weeks." "It's last ditch effort to save the series."

So far no cast changes have been ordered, however, that is only a matter of time as the series ratings continue to spiral down.

Economically the series is prohibitively expensive to producer, given it's large cast of soap opera heavyweights, on-location shoots and sets that need to be broken down.

Default Major Casting Scoop...

The network has also confirmed that "The tone of the show is being adjusted to become a more serialized show. We will feature more stories about the personal lives of the detectives and will showcase guest stars in a more compelling capacity. It's going to become a series that allows actors to really shine."

Among the actors being added to the cast is Emmy-winner Drea DeMatteo, who won the prestigious award for her work on "The Sopranos" and has since starred on shows like "Desperate Housewives", 'Law & Order: SVU" and "CSI: Miami". She is no stranger to Gen-TV having starred in the 2010 flop "Another Day", a police procedural that never fond an audience.

Additional recasting is underway, it is unexpected that any of the current cast, aside from Michael Imperioli will return.

Gen-TV's newest series "Detroit Homicide" has some pretty big casting news to issue, in addition to the already announced addition of Emmy-winner Drea Dematteo to the cast, (and the exit of series star James McDaniel along with most of the original cast), comes word of three more actors joining the series in what is going to be billed as "A season of transformation."

First up, filling the gaping hole left by the loss of McDaniel, the rumored casting of veteran actress CCH Pounder has been confirmed. She will debut in the series as "The squad's newest captain, a veteran detective with an axe to grind following the brutal murder of her husband and son six months earlier." "She will be full of grief, anger and hostility, with little patience. Her rough demeanor will mean a lot of adjustments for the members of the squad who remain when she cleans house."

Next up, television regular Lisa Vidal, whose credits range from E.R. to The Event has inked a deal to debut as a defense attorney defending many of the clients that the squad is pursuing. Her character is described as "Impassioned, Intelligent and strong-willed." She will feature heavily in the season's story."

And lastly, TV veteran Valerie Harper, who won 4 Emmy's for her role as Rhoda on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" and it's spin-off "Rhoda" will join the series as a District Attorney with a staunch eye focused on the homicide squad, who will cause trouble for them.

Additional casting underway.

Default Casting news: "L.A. Real Estate"

Quote:
Gen-TV's summer soap opera just got another hit of adrenaline; a big one at that... Grant Show, most famous for his role as bad-boy, motorcycle riding Jake on "Melrose Place" has joined the cast of this increasingly hot series.

The actor has recently earned credits on series such as "Grey's Anatomy" and sister-soap "Private Practice" as well as "Swingtown", "Accidentally on Purpose' and "Point Pleasant". He was to star on Gen-TV's "Sisters" but that role was recast.

His role is one of the series leads; and he plays a "adrenaline fueled, angry, bitter soon to be divorced husband, hell-bent on revenge after his wife cheats on him and he starts doing all he can to screw her out of any money." Producers say "We'll be seeing a lot of skin from him, as his character, Dr. Chance Allbright will be cheating with every woman in town. He'll be nude a lot."

Accordingly since the series is picking up big name actors and getting a lot of heavy advance press, the network is looking for a more suitable title, as the current title "L.A. Real Estate" seems at best generic. More on that when it happens.

Gen-TV's summer soap opera "L.A. Real Estate" already has a list of hugely famous actors set to star, including Nicolette Sheridan, Eva La Rue, Grant Show, Freddy Rodriguez and now four more join the cast of this ever expanding drama series:

"Knot's Landing" superstar Donna Mills, known for playing mega-witches on TV has landed a prime recurring gig on the series, playing the mother of Dr. Chance Allbright, played by the ever-sexy Grant Show. Her character, named Serena is billed as "Shrewd in the boardroom, with an evil streak, she is not less ruthless as a mother to her son Chance", she see's as a disappointment because he failed to follow in her footsteps and join the family real estate empire to become a doctor, something she looks down on because her ex-husband Victor was a doctor, and she hates doctors.

Also getting cast today are three hot male actors:

Mike Vogel fresh off his stint on the now-cancelled "Pan AM" has landed a supporting role on he series, playing Kent Cunning, a intern at Serena's (Donna Mill's) real estate firm with ambitions of a larger career; who has taken to sleeping with his boss in hopes of landing a more secure job. His girlfriend, Megan (soon to be cast), also works for the company and is furious when she finds out about his affair.

Next up, former "All My Children" star Adam Mayfield (Ex-Scott), has landed a supporting role on the series as Davis Baldwin one of the hottest real estate agents in town, who after working for Serena's firm for six years has left to start his own company, earning both the anger of Serena and a reputation as a local bad boy, which will make getting clients a big problem. The other problem? His excessive gambling, which creates big issues for him.

Lastly, the series will reunite Freddy Rodriguez with his former on-screen co-star Eric Balfour, who made recurring appearances on "Six Feet Under" back in the early 2000's. He will play Carter Baldwin, the younger brother of Mayfield's character, who is a slacker ex-convict secretly working for the bookie that issues a hit on his brother, a hit he is tasked with completing.

Default Gen-TV Executive on networks future

Doug Bartel spoke with Hollywood Insider today to discuss the networks future, his expectation for the impending launch of his first ever fall schedule for the network and his hopes to become the first Gen-TV President to remain with the cable giant following the launch of his first line-up. All of his predecessors were long gone by the time their inaugural season wrapped. The mounting pressure on him is enough to make most men crumble, but for, Bartel an ever humble and realistic man it seems as though he hasn't internalized any of the weight he should be feeling. When asked how he feels just a few months before his crop of fall series are to debut, and just about a month before his first summer schedule airs, he says "I think that if people like our shows they will watch. If they don't like the changes we've made and the new programs we have to offer, they won't watch. It doesn't mean anything personally to me. I'm just doing the job I was hired to do." Now, many may view this sort of response as very caviler, but Doug has a different take, "Many people in the kind of position I have would get very bent out of shape if a show they ordered doesn't hit, I've seen so many people ruin their lives over that sort of thing. I just thing it's detrimental to overall health, office moral and productivity if you get too concerned about that sort of thing. Just do what you are asked and learn from mistakes."

Later in the interview he was asked to sum up the changes he made to the networks schedule for fall and how he came to make such big decisions like cancelling tent-pole series like "Doctor/Patient", "Life's Facts", "Something Old, Something New" and "The Arrival" and what he hopes for some of his buzzy new series.

On cancelling major hits like those mentioned above; "A lot of our sitcoms were feeling a bit stale and played out and it was clear new blood was needed." "Life's Facts was a concept that clearly just never worked for our network and it was becoming difficult to find a spot on the schedule for it." "Sometimes you get the feeling that even if people are watching that it is time for a change. Cast issues were also a problem for some of these show; in particular "Something Old, Something New"."

One of the biggest ironies of this upcoming season for Gen-TV is that despite canning so many successful sitcoms, it's clear they need more in the way of comedy development, and irony that Mr. Bartel clearly understands "Look, I know that we don't have a ton of new sitcoms on the schedule, but the few we do have are strong, very strong and will bring a new identity to our network. I'm particularly fond "Mr. Write" starring the dynamic Craig Beirko. It is a series viewers, especially male viewers will eat up." That show earns the very dubious distinction of launching in a notoriously tough night for shows to air, Thursdays at 9pm. That timeslot was until recently occupied by the mega-hit "The Arrival" which has already aired it's series finale, and ended after a successful four season run. He says "It's obviously hard for a new program to replace one viewers already care about and have faith in, but if a show can capture something special viewers want to see it's possible to create a new hit. I think this show can do just that." It will be aided with a terrific lead-in, the monster smash, "Over My Head", which should provide a cushy ratings ceiling for them to sponge off, "Of course it could go the other way and bleed viewers, as they may appeal to different demographics. In either case the show will come to a point it has to stand on it's own".

One big staple this Fall is how many established series have been moved around the schedule, "It wasn't an easy choice to move series like Better with You, Brand New World or Sisters to new nights, but it was necessary to create a coherent schedule with the best chance at ratings dominance. "We've been #1 from before I came to work here, and it would be an ego-bruise to be the first guy to come in and drive ratings way down. "

Early in his transition to Gen-TV he was criticized for what some perceived as an over-eagerness to roughen up the networks image and strip away some of the more female-oriented series, his response? "Anybody in my role will want to add their own touch to the line-up and examines the programs they have available to them. I think It was clear we need to broaden our audience beyond the female demo and adding a few new series with a broader appeal makes perfect sense. Especially as some of the previous series start to age and loose demo appeal." "Don't worry we aren't going to become SPIKE network overnight or anything like that."

His schedule clearly includes some risky fare, including "D.O.A." a science-fiction epic about train crash victims who awaken in each others bodies and must try to get their own lives back. "It's a risk clearly, a calculated one though. If it hits it will instantly broaden the type of viewers who watch our network, attract the male demographic and younger viewers. It will add some cult cred to Gen-TV, something currently lacking. And if it fails, we at least get credit for trying something out of the box." "That's something other networks, like The CW or YTN could take a lesson in."

They have a few other risky ventures going into this season, such as holding several established hits for mid-season, "Chase", "Abducted", "American Suburbia", "The Family Man" and a duo of reality shows "Carved" and "Sliced" won't return until mid-year. "There is some trepidation in holding back so many shows, but a lot of these are mostly by circumstance and have little (if anything) to the quality of the shows themselves or how we feel about them internally." It's already known that star-heavy and hugely expensive series "American Suburbia" and "The Family Man" each have very small episode orders; 18 for Suburbia, due to the attached cast of movie stars including Michelle Williams and Sean Astin, among others, and 20 for "The Family Man", only 12 of which will include marquee star Noah Wyle, who is committed to another series as well. "We are very lucky, almost unbelievably so to have talent as prestigious as Michelle Williams, Sean Astin, Demi Moore, Noah Wyle, Sharon Stone and others who are on these two series. We are just blessed, so it's obvious we want to make them happy and do anything we can to keep them on Gen-TV. Even if that means smaller episode counts and a longer wait until syndication is a possibility." "We'll do anything we can to keep this vital programs apart of our history." "We are confident most of our freshmen crop will perform high enough to make this strategy a success."

One of the most high profile surprises of the new season is the acquisition of YTN (and formerly ABC) series, "Detroit Homicide" (formerly Detroit 187). "It was a surprise for us when that show became available and it fit a need for us, to have a strong, stable police drama. We haven't had that yet, although we have crime series most of them are FBI or CIA set and don't attract the same mainstream audience a police series does. We need something gritty." "We have some changes in store, but mostly want to keep the series as close to what it is already." "We are thrilled to have Michael Imperioli on our network and are ecstatic for the additions of CCH Pounder and Drea De Matteo."
