Another year, another wild creature named after a TV figure. Following the 2011 naming of a mushroom after SpongeBob SquarePants, a newly discovered crab has been dubbed "The Hoff," after "Baywatch" star David Hasselhoff, reports Escapist.com.
The new type of yeti crab was found by U.K. scientists in Antarctic waters, and was given the name for its resemblance to the actor, the story says. Apparently the crabs grow hair on their underside, giving them chest hair much like Hasselhoff's, the story notes. As reported last year, scientists turned to television for inspiration in naming a bright orange mushroom, which earned the name Spongiforma squarepantsii, after cartoon character SpongeBob SquarePants. http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news...ubbed-The-Hoff
