Episode 1 – “The Return Of Dorothy”

[Scene: The Hotel Lobby. Blanche is behind the counter, and Rose is talking to her.]
Blanche: Rose… room 107 needs some new towels.
Rose: So why don’t you take them up?
Blanche: Because I am the owner!
Rose: You mean we’re ALL the owners?
Blanche: Yeah yeah yeah… now get up and give them their towels.
Rose: Well, okay. But only because I’m a good worker! I actually won the good worker award for working so hard on the St. Olaf cheese sculpture!
Blanche: GO!
(Rose goes to the supply room, while Sophia walks into the lobby.)
Blanche: Sophia! How are you today?
Sophia: Ahh… same ole, same ole.
Blanche: And what’s that, Sophia?
Sophia: Blanche, I’m eighty some years old… what do you THINK it is?!
Blanche: Anyways… where is Roland?
Sophia: Still sleeping.
Blanche: Still? He’s starting to get lazy. There is a lot of work to do!
Sophia: So why don’t you some of it?
Blanche: Because I’m…
Sophia: (interrupting) I know, I know. Because you are the owner, and it’s stressful.
Blanche: That’s right. Now why don’t you go clean up in the dining room?
Sophia: Fine, but I want my allowance tonight!
Blanche: And I’ll add an extra dollar if you put new napkins on every table.
Sophia: (sarcastically) Yippee!!!

[Scene: The Hotel Lobby, later in the evening. Blanche is working on reservations. Roland walks into the room.]
Blanche: Roland, are you just getting up?
Roland: Yes Blanche.
Blanche: You have been sleeping way too much lately, and I don’t like it.
Roland: But Blanche… I’m sick!
Blanche: The “I’m sick” routine isn’t going to work with me. Sophia tries it on me all the time!
Roland: Well I’m not like that mean… old… rotten lady!
Blanche: What did she do this time?
Roland: She stole the soap and plastic cups from my room!!
Blanche: I’ll have to have a little talk with her then. But we need to talk.
Roland: Blanche, I’m serious!
Blanche: You just don’t seem so sick to me. It must be all in your head!
Roland: Blanche… really… I’m just sick.
(Dorothy walks into the hotel)
Blanche: Dorothy? Dorothy!!!
Dorothy: Blanche!!
(They hug each other)
Blanche: How are you?
Dorothy: Not so good, Blanche.
Blanche: What’s wrong, Dorothy?
Dorothy: Well…
Blanche: Well what?
Dorothy: You, me, and Rose now have another thing in common.
Blanche: What are you talking about Dorothy?
Dorothy: We’re all widows.
(Blanche looks shocked)

[Scene: The Dining Room. Sophia and Dorothy are eating dinner together.]
Sophia: Dorothy, something is wrong, and I know it.
Dorothy: Why would you say that?
Sophia: I don’t know… maybe it’s the fact that you won’t talk.
Dorothy: Oh… well I guess that could be it.
Sophia: Pussycat, I’m your mother. You can tell me.
Dorothy: Okay then. Lucas died.
Sophia: Already?!
Dorothy: Ma!! You could at least act sad!
Sophia: I’m sorry, honey. So how much money did you inherit?
Dorothy: Ma!! Quit it!!
Sophia: I’m sorry, I’m sorry! I was just trying to get you to lighten up!
Dorothy: Well it isn’t working.
Sophia: I noticed.
Dorothy: Oh I just don’t know what to do!
Sophia: I know what you can do…
Dorothy: And that would be?
Sophia: You could move back in with us! We could all own the Golden Palace!
Dorothy: Ma… I don’t know…
Sophia: Come on, Dorothy. How many more years do you think I’ll be alive? I really want you here… I really do.
Dorothy: Oh Ma, that’s so touching.
Sophia: I wasn’t so crazy about Lucas at first because he took you away from me, but I got over that. And now that you have the chance to live with me again, I want you too.
(Blanche and Rose walk into the Dining Room)
Dorothy: Great news girls!
Rose: What is it Dorothy?
Dorothy: I’m moving into the Golden Palace with you guys.
Blanche: That’s great!!
Sophia: Pussycat… It’s good to have you back.
Dorothy: It’s good to be back. I missed you guys so much.
Rose: We missed you too!
Dorothy: Hell… I even miss Rose’s St. Olaf stories!
Rose: You do?! Well, I have many many more!
Dorothy: I take that back…

[Scene: The Kitchen. Sophia is sitting at the kitchen table, and Chuy is busy cooking.]
Sophia: Chuy… did you hear the news?
Chuy: Roland told me. He didn’t seem too happy. I’m happy for you though. You must be so excited.
Sophia: I’m thrilled! I missed seeing her everyday. She really is my little girl, even if she if she is old and gray.
(Rose walks into the kitchen)
Rose: Dorothy is all moved in now, Sophia.
Chuy: What room is she in?
Rose: Roland’s.
Sophia: She’s moving in the same room as Roland? Boy, she sure got over Lucas fast!
Rose: Nooo… Roland moved out.
Sophia: He moved out? Why?!
Chuy: Rose, why didn’t you tell us this?
Rose: Well, Blanche also fired him.
Sophia: Fired him?! Rose, you nitwit!! You needed to tell us this earlier! Where did Roland go?
Rose: Well… I don’t know. Blanche didn’t tell me.
Sophia: I’m gonna go look for him. We need him! Blanche can’t manage this hotel for us alone… it would turn into an All-Men hotel!
Rose: What’s so bad about that?
Sophia: For once… you have a good point Rose.
Chuy: Hey! What about me? I want an all-women hotel!
Sophia: (sarcastically) It’s such a shame you don’t have any ownership of the hotel…
Rose: Well let’s go find Roland Sophia!
Sophia: Yeah, let’s go. He can’t be too far!
(Rose and Sophia run out of the kitchen into the Lobby)
Sophia: Blanche… what did you do with Roland?
Blanche: I fired him.
Sophia: Why?
Blanche: Because I gave Dorothy his job.
Sophia: Oh... Well then it’s okay.
Rose: But Sophia!
Sophia: No buts, Rose. Our Dorothy is finally with us again!
Blanche: Isn’t it great?!
Rose: (sadly) Yeah… real great…
(Rose walks up to her room)

[Scene: Rose’s Room. Rose is sitting on the bed. Blanche walks into her room.]
Blanche: Rose, I don’t understand why you aren’t happy Dorothy is back.
Rose: I am happy, but I liked Roland!
Blanche: I know you did, but he wasn’t doing the job right!
Rose: I never even got to say goodbye…
Blanche: Trust me… he wasn’t in the mood to say goodbye to nobody.
Rose: Why did you do it Blanche?
Blanche: Do what?
Rose: Fire Roland? He could have had another job. You ALWAYS have to be the leader. The Owner. The President. Remember our Elvis club? You were even the president of THAT! I was just a secretary!
Blanche: Oh Rose… I’m so sorry. Please forgive me.
Rose: Well…
(Dorothy walks in the room)
Dorothy: What are you girls talking about?
Rose: Oh, nothing too important.
Dorothy: It’s good to be home again. With my family. We may not be related, but you guys are the best family I’ve ever had. You, Blanche… You, Rose… and my mother. I guess we’re like golden girls.
Rose: Aww… group hug!
(They all hug each other and smile)
