TV One Acquires Award-Winning Drama New York Undercover, Classic Sitcom Amen from NBC Universal Domestic Television Distribution
Silver Spring, MD - September 15, 2005 -- TV One, the entertainment and lifestyle network for African American adults, this fall will debut award-winning drama New York Undercover and the classic 1980s sitcom Amen, as part of a deal struck with NBC Universal Domestic Television Distribution. New York Undercover features a squad of young urban detectives with complex personal and professional lives who work undercover in America's largest city. Produced by Dick Wolf and filmed in New York, the series, which originally aired on Fox from 1994-1998, is a multiple winner of the NAACP Image Award for Best Drama Series and stars Malik Yoba and Michael DeLorenzo as detectives J.C. Williams and Eddie Torres. Urban music played a key role in the success of the series, with hip hop hits serving as a soundtrack to the action and a regular nightclub set serving as a showcase for musical guests such as Gladys Knight, New Edition, Aaliyah, Curtis Mayfield, Brandy, B.B. King and more. New York Undercover is scheduled to air Monday - Thursday at 9 PM and midnight (ET), beginning Monday, October 3. Amen stars The Jeffersons' Sherman Hemsley as Deacon Ernest Frye of the First Community Church of Philadelphia and focuses on the comedic struggle between the deacon and the church's new minister (Clifton Davis). The series, which first aired on NBC from 1986-1991, also stars Anna Maria Horsford as the deacon's daughter Thelma, smitten with the bachelor minister, and Roz Ryan, Barbara Montgomery and Jester Hairston as involved members of the church congregation. To introduce Amen to the TV One schedule, the network will air a special "Comedy Smackdown" marathon Monday, Sept. 26 - Friday, Sept. 30 from 6-10 PM (ET), featuring episodes of Amen back-to-back with 227. The two sitcoms popular among African American viewers aired back-to-back for several years on NBC in the 1980s. Beginning October 3, 227 and Amen will take their place in the regular schedule, airing back-to-back from 6-7 PM weeknights. In addition to the two series, TV One has acquired a movie package from NBC Universal, including Spike Lee's Crooklyn starring Alfre Woodard, Ghost Dad with Bill Cosby, Brewsters Millions with Richard Pryor, The Wiz with Diana Ross and Michael Jackson, and Cry Freedom, the powerful film about apartheid and the people who fought it. TV One also recently acquired from NBC Universal the second season of the Emmy-winning syndicated daytime hit Starting Over, which will air weeknights at 5 PM (all times ET), beginning October 3, after a successful run on TV One of season one. Starting Over, produced by Bunim-Murray Productions (The Real World, The Simple Life) follows a diverse and ever-changing group of captivating women as they attempt to make extraordinary changes in their lives - all while living under the same roof. In season two, inspirational speaker and best-selling author Iyanla Vanzant joins motivational expert Rhonda Britten as a life coach supporting the women in the Starting Over house, and renowned clinical psychologist Dr. Stan J. Katz joins the show as a consulting psychologist. |

TV One is getting better...but on a somewhat related, and I saw the promos for this on BET the other night, BET is picking up The Wayans Brothers (I haven't it since it left syndication here in L.A.), The Jamie Foxx Show (also no longer seen here), and In Living Color. I'm trying find dates for the debuts for these shows, but my guess is sometime in the next coming weeks.
