DYK about the Osbourne Tire Reef Disaster? In the early 1970s, 2 million used auto tires were dumped into the Atlantic Ocean, about a mile off the coast of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., between two living coral reefs. The area is
about 34 acres. The goal was to build an artificial reef to promote sea life.
But it killed the reef, instead. Now a massive million dollar program is
underway to recover the tires, recovering hundreds daily.
