The sixties had the original VW Microbus, the seventies had the second-generation, single-windshield Bus, and the eighties got the VW Vanagon! THis is a 1985 model.
The Vanagon - its name is an obvious cross of "van" and "wagon" - was more angularly styled than the previous Transporters but actually more aerodynamic. Despite its sharp looks and quirky engineering (it still had a rear-mounted aircooled engine), the Vanagon never really caught on, and it was almost completely forgotten when Chrysler introduced its first minivans in 1984.
The Vanagon lasted through 1992.
