The Quantum was replaced in North America in 1990 by the Passat. Passat is what the Dasher and the Quantum had been called in Europe all along. In the 1990 model year, that name came to the New World. It's short for Passatwind,
German for "trade wind." (Volkswagen likes to name cars for winds and currents to reflect the "international character" of their cars.)
This 1990 model is a GL sedan, with a two-liter, four-cylinder engine. The Passat proved to be popular in the midsize family car market.
