View Full Version : What if Happy Days were based in the 70s and not the 50s?
I think Howard and Marion would be wearing disco outfits when they go to discos and not bowling, Fonzie would be a punk and Potsie would be a big fan of the Rolling Stones.

i think there shoulda been a "New Happy Days" - ala "New Leave it to Beaver" 10 years ago, with a new group of kids based in the 70's, with Fonzie as the "New Al" and Chachi as the New Mr C

Fonzie would be dressed like John Travolta instead of James Dean.
Everyone would have feathered hair. (Wait a minute. They had feathered hair, anyway.)
Arnold's would be a disco and the juke box would be playing disco instead of do-wap.

Exactly. I was going to say that if you went by the hairstyles, it was a seventies show. They paid attention to the '50s detail in the first couple of seasons, but that began slipping away during the third season.
The worst offender has to be Chachi, with his feathered hair and jeans jacket. And Joanie would not have had an '80s perm in the late fifties/early sixties.
Fonzie and co would all have differtent tasts in music, TV and fashion and Potsie would be a fashion fan, a M*A*S*H viewer and a Rolling Stones freak.

Bea,
This sounds like the basis for an interesting piece of fan-fiction. You could reimagine the show in the '70s.
I imagine Fonzie would have long hair and that episode where Joanie takes up smoking could be revised so that she takes up smoking...something else. Joanie would be a womens-libber also.
Arnold's could be a disco and the guys could try to sneak backstage to a Led Zeppelin concert.
Just don't use That '70s Show as a template for creative reference - that's a way to do an unfunny time piece.

Yeah it started out as a 50's show, but it seemed more of a 70's show later on. At least the dress, the music & the hair seemed to indicate that.

You know what, Doc, that's an awesome idea.
I could see "Happy Days" turning into "That 70s Show" with Ashton Kutcher playing Potsie and Topher Grace as Richie. Remember that "That 70s Show" was also based in Milwaukee, which means that, if they wanted to, they could show the "Happy Days"gang as they were 20 years later hanging around Kelso and Fez and friends and creating new story ideas. And wasn't that Mrs. C herself, Marion Ross, playing Eric Forman's chain-smoking Grandma in the first season? Now there's a basis for some interesting plot developments right there!

Topher Grace is okay, but NO MORE ASHTON KUTCHER!!
I refuse to watch any of his shows because I feel he is smug and talentless. Topher Grace has that dry sense of humor about him and I've seen him in movies and he's quite good.

i think kutcher is good. he's got some great lines, like when he plays dumb, like the time where he was saying eric threw a rabbit up a tree, n he wanted 2 get it down n put it back in the wild so that it could lay its eggs. or when he jumps off his chair all excited, with a dumb idea. hes great.
i know kitty's mom was played by betty white. it coulda been red's mom tho, but i really dont think it was.
theres lots HD refercnes in that 70s show tho. i had them all up in a post b4. they were usually really good too.
crap! i 4got what i was supposed 2 say!
ohhh!! i got it! in the first rocky movie (my fav movies, all of them) its set in '75 or 76, n one kid in it says
"sit on it!"
which i always thot kinda weird, cuz that was a 50's HD thing, not 70s. just thot that was weird. so who knows, maybe those kids or sylvester stallone (wrote the movies) was a fan or happy days or something. i dont know.

Somehow, I could see Ralph and Potsie getting busted for smoking grass. Or Richie is busted for holding it for them.

I think later on HD WAS set in the 70's at least the hair styles and the clothes were from then. I would have an ep in which Fonzie and his wife could travel to LA and visit Ritchie.

Heavens no, not her! I disliked her too. Ashley would have been a better choice. I would have Fonz and Paula Petralonga together.

So Bea,
Did you ever write this as a piece of fan-fiction??
If it were me, I'd keep the general tone of the show the same, just have it take place in a different decade.
Think of it...what would Fonzie wear?? A leather jacket and ducktail would be out of place in the '70s. He'd probably be wearing a denim jacket. Richie might be a reporter for a Rolling Stone-like magazine, doing underground journalism that exposes corrupt politicians.
The drug issue would have to be addressed. I could see Fonzie admonishing Ralph and Potsie for always sneaking off to smoke a doobie. Richie, of course, would still be Richie and never do such a thing. Fonzie would have no use for drugs, dismissing hippies as "bums."
Howard would still run a hardware store, but he would be pressured to sell out to a major hardware chain who's trying to squeeze out small businesses. Howard would resist, of course.
Marion would probably find herself getting drawn into the women's lib movement, though she'd still be Marion and probably not go all-out with it. She took a part-time job at Arnolds on the original show, so this is not a stretch.
Joanie would be challenging Howard about his old-fashioned attitudes and how women should be treated as equals. She would be boy-crazy of course and would be a Led Zeppelin fan. An "episode" could detail her exploits trying to get backstage at a Zeppelin concert or finding their hotel rooms.
I would have Arnold as the owner of the restaurant, though it probably wouldn't be a drive-thru. I'm not sure, but I think those were gone by the early '70s. Arnolds would be Arnolds, just with different decor - beads, perhaps?? The kids still need a hangout and they're not old enough to hang out in a club, so... I could see Arnold cursing in Japanese after yelling about "you crazy kids smoking your funny cigarettes in my bathroom!"
Those are just some stray ideas off the top of my head. :D

Arnolds burned down, then shortly after that, Richie and Ralph were drafted and indeed, the show was never the same after that. Ron Howard took a big part of the show when he left. :(

imagine the latter seasons set in the early 1980's like when they aired, with Joanie and Jenny Piccolo trying to get backstage at a Duran Duran concert, and Fonzie bleaches his hair and becomes a Billy Idol wannabe.
