I watch it all the time on the-N. It's only recently that I started watching the Next Generation on a regular basis, with the current third season. Degrassi Jr. High/Degrassi High from back in the day, I used to watch all the time, I'm glad they're supposed to be releasing that series on dvd soon.

DEGRASSI' DE BOMB WITH A NEW GEN
By MICHAEL GILTZ

June 11, 2004 -- WHEN the stars of the hit high school drama "DeGrassi: The Next Generation" came to the U.S. for a nine-city tour, they suddenly realized how much the Canadian show has caught on with kids.

"They were treated like rock stars — all these screaming fans," laughs co-creator Linda Schuyler, whose show airs on cable channel The N Fridays at 8 p.m.

For anyone wondering what the fuss is about, tonight's show is a perfect introduction since it's an homage to the teen classic "The Breakfast Club" and an introduction to the characters.

"DeGrassi" is a Canadian institution that's been around in one form or another for 25 years. In Canada, it is CTV's highest-rated Canadian show.

It reportedly inspired Aaron Spelling to launch "Beverly Hills, 90210," but much of the noise recently came from its hot-button issues.

One recent episode on cutting — self-mutilation, often by girls — made headlines when some teachers argued students copied the show.

Another, on abortion, has yet to air in the U.S. as The N, geared toward teens, figures out if and how to present it.

A third episode, on a main character coming out, prompted an outpouring of letters and critical praise.

"My whole attitude toward producing the show is that if kids are talking about it in the schoolyard, we can talk about it on the show," says Schuyler, a former eighth-grade teacher who decided to make a short film about teens in 1979 that led to "DeGrassi."

"I would much rather have them talk about some of these issues based on what they've seen on 'DeGrassi' rather than based on the misinformation they've picked up on the schoolyard, the movies and the Internet."

It is the second of eight new summer episodes, with another 22 shows hitting The N starting in October.

I watched Degrassi Jr. High and Degrassi High back in the day and discovered TNG in 2003 on The N. I do enjoy TNG, but some of the issues are quite controversial. I had an idea they would do something with Manny (she was too cute to play 2nd fiddle to Emma) but I don't like her being a hoochie! So, who's your favorite character?

I don't know if I have a favorite but I like the Jimmy character. He seems like a cool guy and I liked the way he supported Marco when Marco got jumped on the way to the hockey game. On the old show, Joey Jeremiah was by far my favorite character.

I'd prefer if J.T. would go back to his close cropped haircut. What is it about the show that makes you like it?

I care about the characters for some reason. On the original Degrassi I just simply got into the stories and the characters, I felt like they were schoolmates of mine as opposed to just a tv show I was watching. I like the new show mainly because of the cconnection to the original.

I guess I pretty much feel the same as you. Did you know the old Degrassi was the top-ranked show in Canada during its run and I believe TNG also holds that distinction. Ironnically, the original was on the CBC network while CTV carries TNG. Wonder why the network switch?

Yes, I read recently that the show was the most popular show on Canadian tv. It's cool. I've just always been a big fan of teen shows, I dig Radio Free Roscoe (airing on The-N) as well.

You mentioned JT's hair, I wish Marco would go back to the style he had when he first started on the show. He's getting a bit too glammed out. It's a cool show though. I'll get the dvd set when it comes out, they'll be the "Director's cut" episodes so we'll see whatever The-N was too afraid to broadcast on tv. If they ever release the original Jr. High and High on dvd, I'm getting those too.

I know what you mean about director's cut. It seems the N episodes are only about 22 minutes long. There's always a 3-4 minute video after the shows. Also, did you see the episode where terry was hospitalized. The acting between Spinner and Paige seemed really forced. What did you think?

I didn't like the scene where Spinner was about to punch the guy (I forget his name) then ran off crying that he was the same violent way. I was watching that scene and thought that could have been done better. I hope they don't do any more abusive boyfriend episodes.

Did you notice on the Battle of the Bands episode the girls had great drums sounds on their song but no one at the drum set!!!

Seems to me The N ruined the fluidity of the series by not broadcasting the 2 episodes involving Manny's situation. Emma and that girl fighting seemed just outrageous. Of course that girl was with Sean's "group" but there was never any sign of friction between the 2 previously.
