CBS Gets 'Smart,' Wins Sunday
Fast National ratings for Sunday, Nov. 9, 2003.
While the much-discussed showdown between CBS' Elizabeth Smart telefilm and NBC's Jessica Lynch effort left CBS a winner by only a slim margin, the network carried the night more handily.
Overall, CBS averaged a 10.6 rating/17 share for the evening, well ahead of NBC's 8.7/14. ABC held onto third with a 5.8/9, beating FOX's 5.4/8. The WB was fifth with a 2.3/4.
Among adults 18-49, CBS scored another victory with a 4.9 rating in the all-important demographic. This race was closer, as NBC was close behind in second with a 4.5 rating, followed by FOX's 4.3. ABC came in at 3.2, and The WB trailed again with a 1.7 rating.
At 7 p.m., began the night in front with a football overrun-strengthened 13.1/21 for "60 Minutes." "Dateline NBC" was second for the hour with a 6.9/11. On ABC, "America's Funniest Home Videos" was third, beating the 4.3/7 average for two episodes of "King of the Hill" on FOX. The WB was fifth with a repeat of "Smallville."
Fueled by "60 Minutes" overrun, "Cold Case" gave CBS the 8 p.m. hour with a 9.8/15. NBC took second, moving "Law & Order: Criminal Intent" up an hour for an 8.8/13. In a regular twist, a new episode of "The Simpsons" earned a 6.8/11 for FOX, but was beaten by the repeat which followed it with a 6.9/10. Fourth for the hour was "10-8" on ABC, while "Charmed" took a 3.0/5 on The WB.
CBS's creatively titled "The Elizabeth Smart Story" launched at 9 p.m. to a 9.9/15, edging the beginning of "Saving Jessica Lynch" on NBC. Well back in third was ABC's "Alias" with a 6.1/9. FOX was fourth with "Malcolm in the Middle" (5.7/8) and "Arrested Development" (4.2/6). In its first episode since going on production hiatus, The WB's "Tarzan" actually showed minor improvement, taking a 1.9/3 (up slightly in total viewers).
The 10 p.m. hour went to CBS' Smart biopic with a 9.7/16, while NBC stayed in second with "Saving Jessica Lynch," which averaged a 9.5/15 across its two hours. On ABC, "The Practice" took third with a 6.7/11.
