I don't know how many of you know that Alan Autry has been the mayor of Fresno, California for the past three years, but earlier this week he announced he will not run again in 2004. As a citizen of Fresno, I would have to say he was pretty ineffective as mayor and didn't do too much for our town. I was also troubled when he recently criticized Governor-Elect Schwarzenegger about not being selected for his transition team after campaigning for him. I guess some actors (Reagan, Eastwood, and hopefully CA's new governor) are cut out for politics, and some should stick to acting.

When I say, "ineffective", I don't necessarily mean "lousy". He just hasn't done much to better our city. I think it was smart of him to step down and not run again, because he knows that he hasn't accomplished a great deal in the last three years.
And I don't regard "The Shield" in the same respects as I would for "quality" police shows like Dragnet or In the Heat of the Night. I certainly don't think it is an accurate representation of the majority of police. I enjoy it as an interesting character study of a seriously flawed character. I don't see Vic Mackey as someone to admire, but someone to watch self-destruct. Sure, it's gritty. But so is the nature of the central character.

He won in a landslide because he had no serious competition. He didn't even really want to seek a second term. The job basically just fell in his lap a second time. I know he's a nice guy, but what exactly has he done to become a 'terrific mayor'?
