I was just on campus a few minutes ago and the whole sky is just filled with this red-colored smoke. Someone started another fire this morning (About 5 or 6 miles north of here) and now there was another one started just four miles away from the first one. They're saying so far it's gotten 600 acres and it's supposed to get worse. No clue if the ignite was intentional or not.

Oh my. The Earth seems like it's trying to destroy itself. :(

I just heard of another one south of Denver near Castle Rock. Damn, it's repeating itself all over again from last year. ABout 300 people have evacuated out of Jamestown (North of Boulder) and two schools have cancelled classes.

 Oh my god...this is so horrible. I hate fires. Chris, how far are you from the fires?
Fires keep breaking out over here. When they finally have one under control, another one starts, and begins spreading.
It's so terrible *sighs*...

I hope nothing hits Boulder. :(

I hope so, too. I wouldn't want my sister and brother-in-law without a home! :(

The one called the Overland fire is burning like 5 minutes north of us (I'd say between 5 and 10 miles). But you can see the clouds of brown and red so clearly from campus. The other one is burning down south of Denver near Castle Rock. I'd say it's about 45 minutes from here.
Here's a map. Boulder's in blue and the two fires are in orange.

Well Colorado's been in a really big drought lately. That's why there were so many fires last year. And the 70 - 80 mph winds that we've been experiencing lately aren't helping any.

Same thing here in SD. It has rained very sporadically here since El Nino in 1997-1998. I remember there used to be a lake somewhere along the freeway and after El Nino (It should have a "~" over the n but I don't know how to do that) the lake dried up and now it is full of nothing but pine trees and vegetation. I think every year since El Nino whenever Fall rolled around, the area gets terribly dry and one spark can lead to a huge fire and it doesn't help that the Santa Ana Winds keep fanning the flames.

I'm sorry to hear that. Hope it doesn't get as out of hand as the CA ones have. *shudder*

Brian, you live in San Diego right? You didn't have to evacuate did you? Because my friend's grandparents had to evacuate and they live in San Diego as well.

Damn....we've been in a drought too, but fortunately, Iowa is just flat...very few woods to burn.
Stay safe Chris

Well, here are the lastest updates as of 10PM.
The Cherokee Ranch fire in Douglas county has now consumed 900 - 1000 acres of land. 10,000 - 12,000 people have evacuated and 4 commercial structures have burned down.
The Overland fire in Boulder county has now consumed between 4000 - 5000 acres of land. 300 people have evacuated the area and many homes have been destroyed.
It's still not as bad as last summer, but it's getting worse. ABC news also reported that the cause of these fires were electrical problems with power lines. No humans were involved.

I didn't have to evacuate. I don't live in Scripps Ranch, Ramona, Escondido, Julian, or anywhere that the fires are/were. The one closest to my house, in Scripps Ranch, is pretty much contained.

I get anxiety watching the news coverage of these fires. I feel so bad for all those involved.
I'm also pissed because Jay Leno has been making endless jokes in his monolog about it.
Hellooooo, people are dying, thousands of homes lost....a terrible disaster, and that idiot is cracking jokes. :thumbsdow

That's pretty tasteless.
Good news. Looks like the cold front that came through last night helped get the fires under control. All those evacuated have been allowed back home. Thank goodness. We really needed this cooler, wetter weather. And it looks like we might get some snow. Yeah!

Oh I know! I'm so glad this cold front came through. Although, I'm still in a state of shock. Yesterday we were two degrees from making the record of 84 and now it's like 30 below. I was in excruciating pain while walking to Philosophy this morning. It's only a five minute walk from the stop, but the cold made it seem like hours.
I'm so hoping for snow! Up here in Boulder, we only have a light blanket covering most rooftops and cars, but nothing on the ground. It's freezing, but it won't stay as snow once it reaches the ground. How are you guys doing in the city?

No real snow though. Just a layer of frost on everything because of the drizzle. I think we're supposed to get some snow tonight.
Oh, and I think you meant 30 degrees, not 30 below. ;) It's not quite that cold. :D

I guess the cold is just getting to me. :p Tommorrow is forecasted to be even colder. Maybe we can get a good amount of snow and hopefully it stays.
