I need ideas as to how to store VCDs and DVDs from those of you who have hundreds of them. What is the most inexpensive system of storage? It seems a pity to spend so much money on boxes for them.
I bought a huge three-ring binder system from K-Mart, which holds 300 discs, and even on clearance it cost me $20.00. But now that I'm converting to DVDs, I need to have a better system.
Frugal as all get out,

The cheapest method is using the spindles that the orginal blanks come with. You can lable the containers with the name of the series on the container and always know what series is in the spindles. Another cheap method is white cd storage holders and shoe boxes. Case Logic Cases are bulky and dangerous because the zipper can easily scratch CD's. If your convinced that the binders are the way to go, find an online retailer that sells the no name branded ones that holds 200 discs and goes for under $20. Personally the cheap sleeves you mentioned before suck because it's very hard to find a binder that fits the whole sleeve, most have the sleeves hanging out of the end. This is shabby to me. But if you like those I've got a few hundred of them for trade or sale laying around my house that need a new home

I have about 2000 VCDs and up till now I have been storing them in giant binders that hold about 200 VCDs each that I bought off ebay. I bought about 6 at a time and ender up paying about $14 each includinh shipping. However, I'm not thrilled with them. Firstly as mentioned above, they are bulky. Also I find that the binder rings dont lock tight enough and pages sometime fall out of the loops. This could be because they are no-name binders. Before that I used to buy 24-cd wallets at the 99 cent store and store each season seperately but when I hit about 30 seasons it was getting ridiculous. I am thinking of changing my system now. My new idea is to buy paper CD envelopes and store them in shoe boxes, cheap containers (at stores like staples the envelopes about $10 for 100, but if you do a search on yahoo stores you can find them for about half that price). If you leave the flap of the envelope up and write on the top what disc is in there, you can easily rifle through them. You can even store 2 cds per envelope.
Storing in speindles i probably the cheapes but I sont like it because it makes it very hard if you are looking for a specific disc, or copying a season
If anyone has any other ideas, I would love the hear them

I buy dvd cases off ebay. You can get 100 dvd cases for $20-35 shipped. That's around what you are paying for the binder anyways.Got all mine on a shelf in dvd cases. To each his own I guess....

I like your ideas best. I have considered the DVD holders, but like you inferred, they take up room.
My problem now is to find shoe boxes. That's a great idea for our needs.

You can go to some cheap store like a 99 cent store, or an od job type place and buy shoe box sized plastic containers. You may be able to get stackable ones which are easier to store and they are more durable than shoe boxes
Good Luck!
