View Full Version : Mike O'Malley Show on Trio?

every fall the channel Trio likes to dig out "lost" tv shows from the past 10-15 years that were quickly cancelled (usually not even shows that lasted a full season) but wound up having cast members who went on to bigger things. A friend told me that Trio is planning to air both episodes of The Mike O'Malley Show next month during their marathon of lost cancelled shows. Anyone else hear about it?
I own both episodes on tape and must say that I loved it, but also think Yes Dear is a better vehicle to make Mike popular with the masses. Unfortunately the first episode wasn't very good (even tho it was funny to see he spent about 80% of the episode without the trademark baseball cap that he basically had glued to his head on both Yes Dear and Life With Roger), so few people tuned in to see the second episode which showed that the show would've rocked. The episode where Mike takes a class at Yale was much better and showed that the show could've at least lasted the full season before getting cancelled so he could do Yes Dear also. The biggest fault with the show is that Mike and Kerry (his real life sister) were the only interesting characters on it, the character Weasel was a blatant attempt at trying to find a "scene stealing co-star" but it was so obvious that he was annoying instead.

I love Kerry (why else would she be in my avatar) and I think Mike is hilarious so I've always been curious about this show... I'd love to see the two episodes the show had...what is Trio? What else do they air on the channel? I don't think I've ever heard of it...I doubt I even have it where I live. *sigh*

Trio is basically what Bravo was before they went mainstream. They show lots of music specials, and every year, they dig out "obscure" cancelled tv shows to air.
Kerry was very good on Mike's show, except she really didn't get to do too much except be Mike's sister. I think a major part the show failed was because it kinda had a Seinfeld vibe. Mike as Jerry, Kerry as Elaine, Mike's friend Weasil as the Kramer part, and his other friend Jimmy seemed to be the George Costanza. I think the show could've gone places if NBC not pulled it so quickly.
You'd especially like Kerry in the second episode, all in all, she was a supporting part, but the second (final :( ) episode had her help Mike overcome his fear that he'd be a bad college student. I would like to see them work together again because there is a really good brother-sister chemistry between them as actors that is a lot more interesting than your standard Donny and Marie or the like. Maybe she can play Jimmy's sister on Yes Dear sometime. If I had the ability to dub, I'd copy both episodes for ya.

Thanks for all the info, omalleyfan (LOVE the username btw)! I'll look into this. I was never able to find out much about this show, so thank you. That's interesting about the whole Seinfeld thing, too. Hmm.
I've always thought having Kerry guest star on Yes Dear sometime would make an awesome episode! We should send a letter to the writers and suggest it. :) Lol.
Out of curiosity, do you follow what Kerry does at all? Because she is an amazing singer. She was on Broadway last year and I'm sure she'll be there multiple times in the future.

I really don't know too much about Kerry except that she's an actress and is Mike's sister. Does she have any albums out? what kind of music does she sing?
Do you have the Gas channel? If you like Mike, then you'd probably be addicted to it. They show Get The Picture (a really young early/mid 20's Mike as the host, think 1990-1991 ish), Guts/Global Guts (which ran from 1992-1996) and also Figure It Out, which Mike was an ocasional panalist on after his Life With Roger stint in the latter 90's. It is funny seeing him on Get The Picture and Guts because he never (tho he started to on Global Guts which was the final season) wore the trademark baseball cap that is synonymous with him on Yes Dear, Life With Roger and Figure It Out (the biggest shocker is that he appeared sans hat for much of the Mike O'Malley Show, even on the promos he was hatless for it), because after you're so used to the cap, him hatless looks like a totally different person.
Are the other two O'Malley siblings (since I think Mike has 2 older brothers) in show business?

I'm not sure all the types Kerry sings, but she has done some Broadway and off-Broadway shows. She was in Annie Get Your Gun and she understudied Reba McEntire...I believe that Kerry took over the lead for a couple of weeks while Reba was out filming the pilot for her show, actually! The one cast album she sings on (and does it beautifully) is the revival of Into the Woods on Broadway. She plays the Baker's Wife, and she is unable to have a child due to a witch's curse...she finally becomes a mother in the second act but then is seduced by a prince and is killed by a falling tree. :( Lol, it sounds silly, but it's an incredible show. It really is. Music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, the genius. If you're a fan of theatre and Kerry...or just plain Kerry...I'd strongly suggest this.
Into the Woods at Amazon.com (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000067G5Z/qid=1061701691/sr=8-7/ref=sr_8_7/002-9581612-6384838?v=glance&s=music&n=507846)
No I don't get the Gas channel! :( Lol, I'm missing out on a lot of great Mike stuff! I've only seen him without his cap in pictures...never on TV I don't think...
I'm not sure if their 2 siblings are in show biz. Up till now I wasn't even sure if they had brothers or sisters...all I knew is that they were older than both Mike and Kerry. I know Kerry's husband Adam Heller (she got married in October 2002) is an actor. They're actually in a show right now together, called Ragtime, in Sacramento. It's an incredible show, if you ever get a chance to see a production.
Oh, and I'm curious, Mike has a daughter, correct? Do you know what her name is? I never found out! Lol. :)

I know he has a daughter that is about a year old, and that he got married 2 years ago around the time season 1 wrapped, but I don't know the names of either. Unlike the annoying types like Nick Lachey/Jessica Simpson (who really get on my last nerve about going on talk shows and making sure everyone knows about their sex life), Mike seems pretty comfortable balancing and keeping his professional and private lives seperate. There are pictures of him and his wife from the Peoples Choice Awards back in January on www.wireimage.com, just search for his name. Even tho it seems like almost all of the "candid shots" they have from different appearences look exactly the same, but different hat, lol.

He has really gone bald in the past few years. He actually took the cap off in one scene in 28 Days (rent it if you like Mike and like Sandra Bullock in the very least, Mike plays one of the fellow rehab patients where Sandra went to) and you could tell his hair was falling out. Halfway into Guts was when it started becoming visible (Gas airs different episodes next to each other, so you can catch one of the first season Guts episodes from 92, and be followed up with one from 95, and Mike had a full head of hair in the first two years, while in the later seasons it was receding big time), and then he adopted the baseball cap that he wore on Roger all the time (he only took his hat off twice in the series, and both times he was dressed up in suits), but he still had some hair then. But I think it worked so well on Roger that it ended up being his trademark.
But however, I do think that the cap has worked to Mike's benefit, it definately made him more recognizable (a lot of people still don't know who "Mike O'Malley" is, but they know who "the guy on Yes Dear who always wears a cap") and is as much a trademark to Mike as the sweaters are to Bill Cosby. But seeing him without the hat and with a full head of hair is still definately interesting because it's almost hard to believe the Mike on Get The Picture (always wearing a tie and dress clothes, and looking really young, and with a full healthy head of hair. On Guts he was allowed to dress down more and be much more "Mike" than on GTP) and the Mike we know today are the same person. But you always have to get from a point A to a point B.
If you can ever find Get The Picture episodes to buy, go for it, it is a blast actually knowing that that is the same Mike O'Malley we know today.

and here's also a pic (Nick.com has pics of all the GAS shows) from Guts. It's a pic of him with Mo, the referee. He seemed to wear that green and black striped shirt for like 80% of the first season, hehe

Smokes! He looks so young there! LOL. I've never seen those pictures before, so thank you, and for all the info. I had absolutely no idea he has actually gone bald. I thought he just liked to wear hats, lol. But you're right--it is his trademark now.
I feel I owe you some Kerry pictures now. LOL

Yay! Make sure to get the cast recording that I linked from Amazon, because that's the one they sing on, the 2002 revival. It rocks. :D I was listening to it this morning.
The more people I convert to Sondheim, the better. LOL
If you want me to I could send you a sound clip of Kerry singing a song from the show through email. Go ahead and just PM me if you're interested. I already have it recorded.

speaking of Sondheim, have you heard and if so, did you like Madonna's "I'm Breathless" album from 1990? On the album, she performed a few songs he wrote specifically for her to sing in Dick Tracy (Sooner Or Later, More, What Can You Lose).
Also, have you seen 28 Days? Mike is only a supporting character in the movie, but he has enough screen time that you'd love to check it out if you haven't seen it yet. Even tho I have to admit I thought Sandra was stupid for turning Mike down constantly when he hit on her, and then going for Viggo Mortenson who I find overrated. LOL. Mike and Sandra would've been a cute romantic couple.

I do know Sooner or Later and More (I love them both) but I have not heard Madonna sing them (I haven't seen Dick Tracy).....Ruthie Henshall sang both in Putting it Together, do you know who she is? She's amazing. I'm not too familiar with Madonna as a singer, but I'm interested in hearing her sing those particular songs.
I haven't seen 28 Days, I'll have to rent it sometime. What's it rated?

it's PG-13. Nothing too offensive in it but the film is about rehab, so there is lots of discussion about drugs and alcohol in it, and :::minor spoiler::: one rehab patient (but relax, it's not Mike or Sandra) commits suicide about 2/3rds into the movie so that part might be a little hard to stomach. It has a pretty good ensemble cast, besides Sandra and Mike, it also has Steve Buscemi, Alan Tudyk (from Firefly), Azura Skyy (if you watch Buffy The Vampire Slayer, she played troubled teen Cassie in two episodes last season, she plays the same character practically in this) and Dominic West (from HBO's The Wire) and some others in it. It's basically a lighter version of Girl Interrupted, but if you're a fan of anyone from the cast, it's worth watching.

wow Mike looked different! He's so cute and cracks me up. That would be cool if Kerry guest starred on the show. He was funny in 28 days.

it's funny how much Mike has changed, whereas Anthony Clark still looks identical to how he looked on Boston Common.
