Contemorary Britcoms and Multi-regin DVD players

So I'm a huge fan of british comedies. Unfortunately there isn't much talk of some of my favourites here. Many of which I have just recently discovered.
Anyone a fan of (heard of) the following...

League of Gentlemen
The Office
Alan Partridge
Ali G
Brass Eye (or anything by Christopher Morris)
Black Books
Spaced
Trigger Happy TV
People Like Us (brilliant mockumentary)

I just recently discovered how to turn my ordinary North American DVD player into an awesome multi-region DVD player with just a simple 'cheat code' entered in with my remote control. So needless to say I've been going nuts ordering all sorts of British DVDs off the net and having them sent to me here. Surprisingly many DVD players have this ability. I found this fantastic website that lists hundreds of different DVD players and how to make them multi-region with a few simple button pushes on your remote. If anyone is interested in this I'll post the website address here and you can check if your player is listed. Chances are good that it will be. And it actually works! Did for me.

Oh yeah...almost forgot....anyone like these shows I've listed?

If you like Chris Morris, try to find The Day Today. It's a mock news show, with him as the front man. Very good. I'm not really into the shows you mention, but you seem to like the less mainstream ones, so if you haven't yet try The Book Group. Season one is out on DVD R2 now. It's excellent!

I love The Day Today! Was able to get a copy of the series on VHS. Chris Morris and Alan Partridge are a wicked comedy team. I wish they would release it on DVD. That would be gear!
As far as The Book Group, I am somewhat curious to check it out. I saw about five minutes of I believe the first episode and just wasn't sure if I would enjoy it enough to get the DVD. I'm gonna check and see if it's still not on here in Canada.

Just click on the 'Remote Hackable' link for a complete list of all known remote hackable players and simple to follow instructions. There's a lot of hackable players out there. The great thing is they also include pictures of the DVD players so you can simply look for your player by the photo. That's how I found mine.

It seems that these are more for turning British players into region free.

There is no Sony, Panasonic, or Toshiba listed there.

They look like players originating in Europe.

What player do you have and what state are you in (you said you have a North American player)?

You may be right.
I'm in Toronto and my player is a Westinghouse which is also not listed on the site. However I scrolled through all the players and found one that looked exactly like the one I have but listed with a different name. So i tried the hack on it and it worked. No problems. (although I did have to change the player's display option from 'Multi' to 'NTSC'. If you have the time you can check and see if you can spot your player. Otherwise perhaps it is only European players.
You can still do a check on the web for DVD player region hacks. There's apparently a few websites out there with different hacks for different players.

Or maybe Sony, Panasonic and Toshiba brand players don't have any multi-region hacks built into them.
Most likely seeing as they are big brand name players and wouldn't allow something like that to be installed in their machines.

Choose a good search engine and type in "multi-regional DVD hacks" or something similar. There is one page somewhere that lists all known hacks for all known brands, and there are big names there as well.

What about Manchild, Chalkie? Have you seen that one?

Actually I haven't. What's it about? Is it any good?

Opinions are split, but personally I love it! It's about four guys on the verge of fifty who have grown up together, and are still close friends. The chemistry between them is terrific, and it's almost worth watching the show for that alone. Anyway there's Terry the smoothie (Nigel Havers) and James, the not quite so smooth as Terry (Tony Head) who are both divorced; Patrick (Don Warrington) who is incredibly cool and incredibly camp; and Gary (Ray Burdis) who's married. And basically they're all very rich and growing middle-aged very disgracefully. :) It can be immensely embarrassing at times, but that's where half of the comedy comes from. Series one is out on DVD now.
