Yeah I'm watching now. It got to me for about 30 seconds (I'm in NJ) and that was about it. It said it might have started from a power plant fire in Manhattan.......then it spread to parts of Canada.

I'm surprised it didn't hit you, Chris, since you're sort of close to NYC.
Does anyone know if it hit Chicago? I know it's not NE, but it hit Detroit, and Detroit would be more Midwest than NE...

Yea, well explain the fire then.
This is TJL coming to you live from his parents house in Central New Jersey.
I was in Bayonne NJ this afternoon heading for the PATH trains when the outage outed. Since I couldn't get a train back into the city, I took on of the trucks home to my Mommy and Daddy.
I just talked to my roomie who is waiting out the crisis in a bar on 48th street. He also added that no looting has been reported, but if the beer gets any warmer, there wil be trouble.
So looks like I'm embedded for the night at the ol' homestead.

I was at work in Albany when the power went out. It dimmed, went out, came back on and went out again. We got across the river into Rensselaer and no power there or by the grocery store near my house. My neighborhood lost power couple of times but not for long.

I just saw on CNN that the power outage was caused by a lightning strike near Niagra Falls. Hopefully they will get the power back on soon and everyone is ok.

yeah i dont live in the northeast but last week the power went out for like 2 hours and something got struck by lightning and wrecked the moden so we had to get a new one. the movie theatre also got struck by lightning and it broke the car windows in the parking lot and the only reason the ticket lady didnt die was cause she was taking a short break from the window thing (which was also blown out.) it was like a fricken tornado.

In Springfield, (which is in western MA) we've had a LOT of power surges. The lights would dim for a few seconds, then go back on. It's happened about 12 times already.... and I should know. Each time it happened, my computer restarted.. with me on it!

This should be a warning to all Americans that our utilities are extremely vulnerable to sabotage. This time we were lucky. It was not Terrorist. But we depend greatly on electricity and whole cities can be rendered completely helpless if someone were to cut us off.
We need to modernize the grid system and put in checks and balances to ensure that this could never again happen so easily.
I pray for all who have been effected by this and pray that we fix the problem nation wide... before we regret it.

I am just glad that it was NOT a terriorist attack. Our history teacher was just saying the other day that if we had our power, and air conditioners taken away that most likely in 10 years half of our population would die out. I dunno if thats true, but like old people that depend on air conditioners for survival, and even young people...because we have become so dependent on those things. That would be a quite a frenzy if something like that happened, or it terroists did something like that. Scarey thought!:(

I heard about it early and then around 830 saw it on TV. I told my mother I wanted to go and she thought I was nuts. LOl. They showed it all dark with people in the middle of Times Square and all the car lights by the highway... oy. What time did it happen? I wonder if any TV shows were taping when it happened.

That happened to us. Something was wrong with our neutral line. It ruined our computer, 3 tvs, 2 vcrs, 2 cd players and a keyboard and we had surge protectors on a lot of that stuff. We got money from the insurance company and Duke power (they cam out three times and told us nothing was wrong bull :censored: then finally they fixed it.)

My power was off from like 4 p.m. to 6:45 p.m., luckily it came back before it turned dark. We didn't know what to do if it didn't come back, the stuff in the fridge/freezer would have went bad. I didn't know what was going on until like 5 p.m., when I went outside and saw huge traffic, and the traffic lights not working. I was thinking it was probably just in this area. Then I turned on the radio and they said it was in the whole northeast, which is crazy! Then the power came back at 6:45, so I learned everything about this on TV, they pre-empted the entire primetime lineup. The newscasters were doing the news in offices where they get the reports, since the newsrooms probably didn't have power. I couldn't get online until like 30 minutes ago, Comcast just got their power back.
What a day...

I live in Toledo, Ohio. We first knew something was wrong when our phone didn't work around noonish. I heard the phone ring around 1:30 signaling that the phone was back. Then after 4 I logged on the internet and the power went out. We thought the phone company was screwing around with the lines and messed both of them up. Then my mom came home from work she works in Erie, Michigan and told us power was out there too. All the traffic lights were out and people here were driving like idiots. All the radio stations were out and if we tried to call someone nothing happened. My sister was like now my cell phone doesn't work. It's like the hottest day of the year. We thought it was weird that both areas were out at the same time. My mom thought it was a terrorist attack we didn't find out what was going on for like 4 hours. I turned on the TV and saw Bush talking about "The Big Blackout" and found out it was the whole northeast.
I saw all those people in NYC standing in the street because they couldn't go home, at night. I felt sorry for them. I don't think NYC has regained power 100% yet as of now.
Detroit, Michigan was still in the dark too. My aunt works in a hospital up there and she was probably there when it happened and she probably also got stuck up there as well. We haven't heard from her yet.
Another aunt works at Consumer's Power in Michigan we haven't heard from her either.
Cleveland was probably the worst because they had no power or water, they have to have water pumped with electricity because of there landscape.
I'm glad I wasn't stuck on a ride at Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio.
Oh and I almost forgot 140 miners are/were trapped 4000 feet below in 3 Canada mines because they did not have running elevators. I never heard if they got out yet.
I feel sorry for all those people in NYC who couldn't go home, some were also stuck on the subway, the miners, Cleveland (I have relatives there), and anyone else who was still left in the dark.
Last night when I was watching they still didn't know what caused it. They think it was either a lightning strike or the blaster worm. US and Canada were pointing fingers at each other. I guess we should consider ourselves lucky that this wasn't a terrorist attack.

I live about in hour north of Detroit and our power was out from 4:15 yesterday afternoon until 10:00 this morning. I had to drive through most of it too, I was in my car with my brother and my friend from 4:30 until 7:30 and I drove less than 20 miles. All those traffic lights being out, it was scary driving through intersections.

Here's my story. My sister's in her room playing video games, I'm in my room watching Moulin Rouge, and my brother and nurse are in the family room with the fan and air conditioning on. All was good. Then, while I was watching it, the lights kept dimming and coming back. Then my TV went out, but nothing else. I came downstairs cos my mom was home. She's like "The light down by Friendly's isn't working and the radio died!!" but I didn't think much of it and went to watch my DVD. Then I came down to ask where my dad went and my mom's like "SHHHHHH!!!" cos she and Shirley (nurse) were watching CNN. Then our power goes out. My mom's like, "Sh.it, sh.it...." cos all my brother's machines (he has cerebral palsey) run on electricity. I was SPAZZING out, cos I thought we wouldn't ever get our power back. My uncle had power, so we went over there. Shannon and I were watching TV when the picture freezes, so we turned it off and back on - we had no cable. Meh. So we just ate and watched movies and talked on the phone till the cable came back. Then our power came back @ about 10:30, so everyone but me went home.
Lovely story :D
I'm sorry, but I don't understand why the people were running down the streets paniking. I know it's almost been a day, but yesterday I saw it on TV, and I really want to know: Why did everyone feel the need to make it more complicated by walking out of the buildings and into the streets? That made no sense whatsoever. They could have opened the doors, opened the windows. Just because they were on their way home didn't mean that it was going to be any less hot. They should have stayed in their buildings and offices instead of crowding the streets. People in New York are too dramatic for my tastes, and I really don't ever plan on going there when I'm older. They showed Cleveland on TV, and the streets were clear. Traffic was flowing fine. Nobody was making it worse by standing in the middle of the streets.
New York is so.....overrated. We had our electric out for two full days last October because of the two storms. Did they interupt programming nationwide because of that? Nope. We were people too! We were stuck in the fall mugginess for two damn days, but did they even mention it on CNN? Nope. Not at all. I remember what they said on there after it all ended...."Tropical Storm Isidore and Hurricane Lili both powered through Louisiana these past two weeks. There were a few power outtages, but nothing serious." I was just surprised. But now, just because it's NEW YORK, they get full coverage. I swear, they better be lucky they didn't pre-empt my AMC for this. The funny thing is, some people are comparing that to 9/11...that's just sick in my opinion.

The reason they were crowding the streets is because they couldn't go home. The doors to there apartment buildings were locked because they are automatic and need electricity to open them. (they showed someone trying to open the doors on TV.) Otherwise they probably could have gotten in and used the stairs. The elevators were also stuck and without power they aren't going anywhere. They showed some people on TV who were tourists and they told the reporters that they couldn't go to there hotel because the electronic card key didn't work without power. So all those people were stranded in the street.

I don't blame the people for wanting to get out of the office buildings. When all the power out, who can blame anyone, from any city, for thinking of the Twin Towers.
A lot of people walked down many flights of stairs. I would do the exact same thing.
I also didn't see anyone running in the streets of New York in a panic. On the contrary, it was very orderly. I watched the coverage all night, and all the newscasters commented on how civil and polite everyone was.

Well, NYC is the largest city in American -2nd largest in the WORLD-... do you know how many millions of people are there? We've lost our electricity for a few days more than once, but compared to the millions in NYC, we have about 11,000.:o Yah, I agree when you say people are people and we're all equal, but it wasnt just NYC that blacked out. Also- what year was it that NYC blackout? 60's or 70's? We'rent there all these rapes and stuff because it was so dark? I wouldnt compare this to 9.11, but people are going to automatically think of that when anything newsworthy happens to NYC. They had a pic of a NYC building with all these people on the steps because they stayed there overnight.
Not to mention, like someone said earlier- people couldnt get into their hotels or apartments because they're run on electricity. The majority of people who live in NYC live in apartments or are at a hotel. Here in Danville, we all have homes and the apartments that we do have, have keys.

I am glad I was in NC when it happened. But when we came home our fridge and freezer smelt like rancid crap. It was sick.

I watched the coverage of the power outage on my bigscreen tv from the comfort of my air-conditioned home. :happyface
Kidding, I felt bad for those affected.
Nice to have you back TJL.

I heard about all the power outages but I'm glad it didn't happen here. I'm glad I live out in the sticks! When the power goes out here, there's no light anywhere and it's soo creepy. There's a little bit of light that comes from the hospital and that's it. It's pitch black everywhere. I hope no one got injured during the outages. Is the power back on now?
