New York to Open First U.S. Public School for Gays

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A school in New York's Greenwich Village will reopen in September as America's first publicly run high school for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender students, officials said on Monday.

Although The Harvey Milk School has been operating with two classrooms for 20 years, $3.2 million is being spent by the City to expand it to take 100 students. Named after a gay San Francisco politician assassinated in 1978, the school will be funded jointly by the city education department and a gay rights youth advocacy group.

"Everybody feels that it's a good idea because some of the kids who are gays and lesbians have been constantly harassed and beaten in other schools and this lets them get an education without having to worry," Mayor Michael Bloomberg told reporters at his daily briefing on Monday.

But the head of the New York State Conservative Party said the school was a waste of tax dollars.

"This makes absolutely no sense," Long told the New York Post newspaper. "There's no reason these children should be treated separately."

The school's first principal is William Salzman, a former Wall Street executive who has recently worked as an assistant high school principal.

Salzman was quoted in Monday's New York Post as saying, "This school will be a model for the country and possibly the world."

It will specialize in computer technology, art and culinary programs. It will also follow the education department's new mandatory English language and mathematics programs.

See, I have mixed feelings about this.

On one hand, I really think that in the long run, it's going to almost encourage segregation in the gay community. Gay high school students attending school with only other gay high school students might not be the best thing for both gay and straight kids. And less gay kids in the regular public schools might cause even more ignorance and intolerance among the straight community.

But I can also empathize. I can imagine that growing up gay is probably one of the hardest things imaginable. Going to school and getting teased and beaten up by hateful neanderthals just because of your sexual preference? That's awful.

I think that instead of opening separate schools for gay kids, we need to teach all of our kids (and adults) to respect each other's differences. It's the only way this country can keep prospering.

I'm kind of leaning toward that position, too, Max. It's kind of like opening a separate school for blacks. It just seems like it will segregate the community, and that's never good. We're all one.

its just fucking segregation. Homophobia will never be fixed with crap like this. homosexuals are supposed to be fighting towards acceptance not to be isolated in society.

What ever happened to the idea of diversity? I've heard of schools strictly for blacks, hispanics, american indians, and now gays? How can we become diverse and learn to accept and tolerate each other if we keep ripping these groups apart?
