View Full Version : Best job offer?

The best job offer I ever received, was to work for the Jerry Springer show. I wrote Jerry a letter in 2000, telling him that I thought he should change the format of his show. I said that instead of making fools of people, he should try to help people. I also gave him a show idea about train hoppers that they are possibly going to be doing soon, and if they do, they're even going to put my name in the credits. Anyway, after one of the producers read my letter, he said he was very impressed, and that he never saw an 18 year old that thought the way I did before. He actually wanted to fly me down to Chicago, get me a place to stay, and have me work at the show as an intern, and possibly become a Producer in the future. Unfortunately, because of my agoraphobia I was unable to do it, but I was quite honored about the offer nonetheless. Anyway what is the best, or strangest job offer you guys have ever received?

Same here.
mdntrider7, was agoraphobia the ONLY thing standing in your way of accepting that awesome offer? I'm not preachy or anything, so I hope you don't think I am. Whatever you want to do is totally up to you, but I always have been a believer that phobias can be treated successfully and even quickly if you just lead yourself in the right direction for treatment. I would hate to think you would have done that job if it hadn't been for the phobia.

No, actually there was a number of reasons why I chose not to do it. For one thing, I have been diagnosed with 10 different mental illnesses including panic attacks, agoraphobia, severe depression, OCD, ADD, as well as a bunch of others that I can't even pronounce. Having all of these things wrong with me has made my mind very cloudy, and at the present time there is no way I could handle a job like that. Some days my mind works great, but on other days I can barely even pronounce my own name. If I did decide to work for them, I don't think I would have lasted long because of these problems.
Aside from my mental illnesses, I think I would have had problems taking that job on moral grounds as well. I am a firm believer in a person standing up to their beliefs no matter what. I don't think I would have been able to live with myself by working at a place where all they seem to do is humiliate, and embarrass people. I think the Jerry Springer show is a disgrace, which was why I wrote to them in the first place, and unless they totally changed the direction of their show, I doubt I would have decided to work their. I like to think that no amount of money in the world would get me to work at a place like that.
I definitely appreciate your concern, and don't worry, I don't take anything you're saying as being preachy. It's actually nice to know you care. I actually had a psychodiagnostic evaluation recently, and the examiner said that despite my illnesses, I have higher than average intelligence. He also gave me the number to a place that can get me some medicine, so hopefully things will be better soon. He is also looking into other options to help me as well, so I'm excited about that. Again, thank you for your concern, it is appreciated! :)

Yeah, it doesn't surprise me that you would score an above average intelligence score on that test. I still can't get over how your one letter got you a job offer for a well known talk show! Too impressive for words. No doubt you'll have many awesome opportunities in the furture with your brains and ability to write. Was it one doctor that told you that you had all those conditions? Didn't he or she help you with treatment? Well, it sounds like soon you will get treatment that will work out for you. You definitely deserve to be relieved of this stuff soon!
I applied for an internship last summer for an independant film company in New York City. It would have included free room and board, and working with the editing department (an area I'm VERY interested in) and they even had an opening in marketing (my best friend is a marketing major). I had to turn it down because they said they couldn't take me until September - and - well, I was in Germany. :( Next year, maybe ;)
