"Excuse me, do you have the time?"

Mr. Bevis
07-16-2003, 07:01 PM
Rexx: "For you, angel, I've got all the time in the world."

Woman in white (smiling, amused): "What makes you think I'm an angel?"

Rexx (with a smile and a dry chuckle): "Oh, you can't fool me. I think I know an angel when I see one."

Woman in white: "Well, then, who am I to argue?" (as she arches her eyebrows seductively, her lips slowly unfold to reveal a dazzling smile)

Rexx: "Buy you a drink?"

Woman in white: ?

"Submitted for your approval, one Rexx Rains, age thirty-seven, who spends his days as a world-weary private detective and his nights as an attractively charming rogue; a man whose life has been sufficiently long and adventurous for him to conclude that he's seen everything under the sun. In the person of the woman next to him, however, he's about to meet someone whose knowledge and experience of the world's darkness make his own look like a new-born babe's by comparison, a woman who by means of her own patented charms will cause him to plunge head over heels into . . . . the Twilight Zone."

Yes, everyone seems very enthusiastic about the Zone. :) There's some real writing talent here, too, and a great set of emoticons (not necessarily in any order of importance ;))

I'm thinking about where this story can go from here--any suggestions are welcome. What do you think about Rexx Rains--does he make it through the story alive? If so, how does he manage it? :rotflmao: (Great emoticon--must make mental note not to overuse that one.) I think the woman in white must be a devil, demon or witch of some kind, but I want to write that so as to offend as few sensibilities as possible (and still make it as good a "story" as possible). This story isn't about encouraging witchcraft or devil worship; it will be for entertainment purposes only.

Mr B
Nice meeting u in the twilight Zone, :). I am glad u r here, thanx 4 coming again.

I concur, great enthusiasm here, TZ is a play ground for intellectuals ( I hope to gain that status one day,LOL).

-----------------------
Ironically, this story could come off as the opposite of the ep Mr Bevis, Where the woman in this story is no angel, and tries to make him do evil things ( this has been done b4, but we could twist the ending abit).

--OR---

Perhaps, she was a sad/cynical soul of a human that died, and needs to save Rexx to get her wings, Like in "Its a Wonder Life", but she actually falls in love with Rexx, which could deny her her wings, she is conflicted on if she wants to love him or save him. She decides she wants to be with Rexx. In the end,( the Supreme being) says that her loving Rexx actually saved both of them
( It was a test), and she returns to this plane of existence to marry/love Rexx, and they liiiiiive happily ever after.

Just one ideal. What do u think?

------------------

Woman in white says: Why you are a gentleman, I am flattered.
( She says in a sultry tone, she seems to be toying with RR)

Rexx goes up to bar and buys 2 drinks, and places them on the counter in front of them.

Rexx: Here you are. ( Rexx says, staying cool, and smiles)

Woman : If I am an angel, hehe, what does that make you, my dear? ( The woman says while eyeing Rexx).

Rexx: ?

------------------------------------

Mr B, I can not see how u can overuse that emoticon :)

Maybe u can do like me, I use  alot, its all gooood

"just a tired man that can't fit together the pieces of a case to save his life. but you're not interested in that. buy you another drink before i go?"
"what's your hurry? we just started getting to know one another." she watches him as he puts his coat on.
"no baby, i have work to do."
she watches him walk out the door.

minutes later, he gets on the subway to go home. and standing beside him, is the lady in white.

Hi BRY, great to see ya
great add on
---------------------------------------------------
" I am a private eye, its my job to find answers, but I have no clue who you are or how you did that" Rexx is dumb founded.

" Rexx, I am just a woman" The woman in white declares.

" Whoooa, how the heck do you know my name, are you a spy or something, I 'm out of here, " Rexx pushes the emergency stop and runs out of the subway station. He runs into a pharmacy, to hide out.

" I have the cure for you" the woman says in a heavenly voice, standing next to him.

The woman says:
--------------

Hey BRY, where is Red Rooster? Is he here @ another tvlinks board?

Mr. Bevis

"Oh, Rexx?"

Rexx stared at her. "How did you know my name?"

"Oh, I know a lot of things, Rexx. (pause) A lot of things about you, about people, oh, about almost everything really."

"Who are you?"

"You can call me . . . Nikki."

(The idea of making her an angel is interesting, too. I personally think making her evil would be more fun, but I think you should be the final judge of that, Zone1, since you introduced the story.

I also think that all things being equal, it might make the story more suspenseful if we delay saying exactly who or what she is, or whether she is good or evil, for as long as we can. I'll have to rewrite "Rod's" opening monologue to accomplish that. I'll do that later.)

Mr B, With your intro, it s your story, if u want to make her a devil, thats fine, it can be alot of fun :)

Perhaps, she is fooling him to believe she is an angel but nvr says it, Like in "A Nice Place To Visit".

" Nice cartoon reference, Rexxy, thats what I adore about you, you are not typical... How I got in here, well, the door was open and so I decided to enter to see if anyone was home" Nicky said, but in actuality it was a lie, then distracted Rexx by lowering the sleeves of her Ivory white dress, exposing her cremey shoulders, and gestured to him to come hither, and stared into his eyes of azure.

Rexx wanted to drown in her eyes which were brilliant shades of chocolate, honey and brown sugar, he was falling for her, but then he pulled back and said " Even if that were true, I never told you where I live, who are you?!? "
" This is getting boring, Rexxy, I told you I am Nikki, what more is there to know? Now be a gentleman, and come sit on the couch next to me, theres much to discuss" Nikki demanded politely, as she afixed her gaze on his narrowed dark blue eyes.
Rexx, as if hypnotized does as she says, and she continues
" I have great plans for you, my dear," Nikki expels.

-----------------------
Maybe Nikki is a devil, and she persuades him to do things that seem benign, fooling Rexx, b/c in actually what she is asking him to do is bad. Whatdya think?

Suddenly, Rexx knew he must resist. With all the effort he could muster, he focused his eyes, which were beginning to see everything as one big blur, and said, "Now wait a minute. I don't know what kind of game you're playing here, or if this is all some sort of huge practical joke. But if you won't tell me who you are, at least tell me what you want from me, and why you're doing all these things." As he kept on speaking, he was steadily gaining control of himself again. "Or doesn't that happen to be in your plans for me?"

Nikki looked at him.

"So, all the years of caving in to every temptation you could find haven't completely sapped your strength. I'm impressed."

"Frankly, I don't see how that's any of your business."

"Very well, let me be straightforward then. I happen to know something about this 'case' of yours that you mentioned at the bar. Oh, believe me, Rexx, I know which one you were referring to. The only case you've never solved to your satisfaction. A murder case, isn't it?" She cocked her eyebrow, and a slight smile returned to one side of her mouth. "Yes, a murder case . . . unsolved for sixteen years. I also know that the victim was, of all the women you've known, the only one you've ever truly loved. And that the client you are working for in this case . . . is yourself."

Now it was Rexx's turn to look at her.

"Rexx." Her voice was almost a whisper. "I'm here to help you. I can help you uncover the truth about who murdered her, and make sure the killer doesn't escape justice. That's what you've wanted all these years, isn't it, Rexx?" There was no need for him to answer. "All the frustration, all the wasted years . . . all over and done with now. Or it will be, Rexx, if you'll let me help you."

"How can you help me? Who are you?"

"More of your questions, Rexx?" Nikki laughed quietly. "Still continuing your long, unbroken pattern of sixteen years of asking questions that haven't helped you in the least. Let me ask a question now, Rexx. What would you give for the knowledge I offer you? What would you give to be at peace with yourself again? To be the man you once were? To be able to sleep at night? You'd give anything, wouldn't you?" She held a contract and a gold pen in her hands.

Feeling himself sinking again into Nikki's dark, mysterious eyes, Rexx felt more helpless than ever before.

Rexx says reluctantly " Yes, it has eaten at me for what feels like forever, what is your price?"

" Oh something of value, but not worth money, your soul,my dear Rexx" Nikki insists.

" I felt like I was in " The Arrival", now I feel as if I am in
" Printer's Devil", I am not sure" Rexx wavers out.

" Rexx, Rexxy, you watch Twilight Zone alot, thats fiction, come on, would the devil come down in such an attractive package? Now really sign on the line"

" Yes, watch "Of Late I Dream of Cliffordville" Rexx replies. "Yet, it is make believe, haha," Rexx signs. Suddenly the room spins, Rexx is briefly unconscious, and then wakes up.
Basically from here Rexx solves his 'case', but arrests an innocent person bcuz Nikki falsified evidence. Rexx then becomes a very successful P.I., then later realizes that Nikki is the devil helping him.
Rexx says " I hope you dont turn into Pacino now, HooWaaaaa". Rexx asks for help from above to stop Nikki, an attorney angel in white come downs, and shows Nikki that Rexx did not "Dot the 'i' in Rainns, so 'the contract 'is NOT binding", then the angel says
" So go back to where you came from" Nikki sinks into the ground, ablaze.
and says " Rexx, you schemed me, you win!" Then instantlyall the past evil acts of Nikki became erased. ( The true perpetrators were found guilty, and all the innocents were free)
" Who said old dogs cant learn new tricks, my name is Rexx by the way" Laughs out Rexx.
" Who says there are no attorneys in Heaven" Smiles the angel, and grows wings and goes up to the clouds.

You Know Mr. Bevis, I remember my drama 101 prof saying sadly that some ppl dont take happy endings seriously.
I understand the sentiment, sad to say I think unhappy endings are usually more literally effective, sorry.
What does this say about some ppl, I hope 'Nothing', but some might say ppl are cynical about life, thus think happy endings are too irrealistic or too idealistic.
I like happy endings alot also though, I wish more ppl did too,as you do, u r cool in my book.

No, don't worry about that, Mr. Zone1! I said someone could use another idea if they had it. Since you ask, though . . .

I was going to go straight from the scene I wrote to the two of them eating breakfast together the next morning--Nikki comfortably, Rexx with a curious mixture of comfort and fear--but with Rexx having blacked out on whether or not he actually sold his soul to Nikki, whom he now realizes to be in league with the devil. He's scared to ask Nikki whether he sold it or not (and why should he believe her anyway, whatever she answers?) Rexx tells Nikki during breakfast that he has blacked out the whole portion of the evening after Nikki was questioning him--which is true--but Nikki replies simply: "I'm not offended, Rexxy. There are things the body remembers even when the mind forgets." . . . which Rexx also realizes to be true. ;)

Now I'm making some of this up as I go along here, but Rexx and Nikki spend a while together during the day, and Rexx realizes he is falling in love with her. This feels good, but it also scares him, because he reasons that if he can fall in love with someone he knows to be as evil as he knows Nikki is, then his soul must not be his own. On the other hand, if he has lost his soul, how can he be in love with anyone?

So eventually Nikki says: "We've spent enough time together right now, Rexx. Now I want you to ask me the one question to which you most want the answer." Rexx looks at her, and knows that whatever he asks, she will not lie to him.

He takes a breath and asks: "Have I sold my soul?"

To which she answers: "Well, I'm afraid you did, Rexx." She is smiling, as he might have expected, but the good-naturedness in her smile puzzles him. "You'll be relieved to know, though, that the contract is null and void."

Rexx, experiencing the supreme moment of relief in his life, is speechless.

"I wouldn't feel too bad about not being able to resist, Rexx. It was quite a pitch, wasn't it? Made by someone who, unfortunately for herself, rose a little too high in her profession a little too soon. If it's any comfort to you, Rexx, the Devil himself was scarcely more able to resist the charms of the . . . 'woman' . . . you met last night than you were. As a result, he assigned her a position in the organization that she wasn't quite ready for."

"Nikki . . . I'm sorry--did you say 'the woman I met last night' ?"

"The woman you met last night is not here. She no longer exists."

Rexx looked again into the eyes in front of him . . . as cool and composed as ever he'd seen them, barely concealing a fire as bright as had shone from them when she was persuading him to sign on the dotted line. But as he continued to look . . . no, they were not Nikki's eyes . . . something was not the same . . . the fire, altogether different . . . What's this, now? She's crying . . .

"And just who are you now, Nikki?"

"Don't you know?"

***************************************************

Suddenly . . . he knew, all right. He ran over to hug her. "My God! Sixteen years, Mary Beth!"

"Good work, detective," she said, smiling again. "Yes, your friend Nikki's gone for good, or at least that's the simplest way I can put it that you'll understand. What their organization does to agents that fail in their mission doesn't resemble any kind of existence of which you can conceive. You see, she made the mistake of promising you peace of mind, something that the organization she worked for can never deliver. Shortly after she blundered by having you sign an invalid contract--well, her horrible spirit left the beautiful body that concealed it. I was given special permission to occupy this body for a time."

Rexx hadn't stopped smiling. "Mary Beth, it's so good to have you back! . . . Oh my dear God. " Now he took a breath. "You must know all about me, about the life I've lived, I mean even before last night . . . I'm so sorry, Mary Beth, it never would have happened if you were here. Please, I beg of you, forgive me."

"I forgive you, Rexx. What I'm wondering is whether you can forgive me what I'm about to tell you."

"Forgive what you're about to tell me?"

"You didn't fail to find my killer because you were a bad detective, Rexx. Or because you were somehow unworthy of me, or because you got outsmarted. You had another question on your mind other than the one you asked me, Rexx."

A pause. Then: "Of course I have. Who killed you, Mary Beth?"

"I've come to answer that one, too. It's not much of an answer, but it's the only answer I can give. And the answer is that all the questions you want to know about my murder--who did it, why it was allowed to happen, why no one could solve it--they just aren't meant to be answered yet, not in this life you know. I don't fully know the answers myself.

"But you can know that you are loved, Rexx. I love you, and always have. And even if something somehow could make me stop loving you, you'd still be loved with a power greater than you can imagine. Don't forget that."

"And now I have to go."

Rexx watched her as she walked away. Just as she started to fade into the air around her, he remembered something. "Wait--you said Nikki left 'shortly after' her mistake last night? Honey, I have something important to ask you . . ."

"About 'last night'? More of your questions, detective?" Her eyes and smile were still gleaming in the twilight. "Let me ask you something, Rexx: with your history, what difference would it have made?"

Then she faded out.

Mr B,

Great ending, makes one think alot. is it a spiritual reason why the answer cant be found? I am still perplexed, which is a good thing.

Perhaps there is a dark reason how she was killed, like sucide that looked like murder, and she blocks the memory from her mind. Pls let us know. As I said u own this, could u put an outro on it, Gratzi

Um, yes, it is definitely a spiritual reason. There are many examples of suffering amd injustice in this world that we don't know the specific reason for, and this was meant to be one of them. Also I couldn't come up with another interesting answer to the mystery.

I guess it could be interpreted that way, that there was some reason that she blocked the murder from her mind. I wasn't thinking along those lines when I wrote the ending, though.
Maybe she got shot or hit over the head from behind or something, and never saw her killer, much less learned his/her name. But the nice thing about many or most (possibly all?) TZ eps is that they can be interpreted in more than one way. I'm going to rewrite it a little to make one part possibly less perplexing, though.

As I said u own this, could u put an outro on it, Gratzi

Nice story we gots here. Per haps her twin sister put a hit on her, but bcuz she is so closely related, she blocked it, hmmm?
Or Darker yet, Rexx killed her, she is playing him like a fool, but then starts terrorizing him/haunting him. Then what, not sure, lol

Or-- whatever, An open ending is cool too, TZ had a few of those.

( Reminds me of " Lady or the Tiger" a short piece of fiction,w/ an open ending)

I like your ending, it leaves on an up note IMHO. Great work, thanx
