And Then There Were Three Episode

I recently watched the episode when Tabitha was born. The scene when Darrin came into the room to see Samantha after the birth was very touching and natural. I nearly teared up because it looked so real as though Dick York and Liz Montgomery actually had a baby together. The chemistry between those two actors were electifiying in that episode. Personally that particular episode was one of the most tender moments of Bewitched. Even the emotional moment between Darrin and Endora was so genuine.

I saw that episode was very touched as well. Elizabeth and Dick had wonderful chemistry. I liked when they told each other, 'You're beautiful'. I hope I have that right.
I'm glad I'm seeing this show often now. It's a gem.

That episode was absolutely one of the perfect ones!!!

(1)It had great chemistry between Elizabeth and Dick York and some of the most touching scenes the two ever had together.

(2)It also boasted the fantastic Eve Arden as guest star (she was always wonderful in whatever role she played) in a nice change from the fairly regular guest stars who continually appeared in different roles.

(3)Some terrific work by Dick York, first interacting with Endora (more touching displays of affection in a nice appropiate twist...could you imagine that scene being played by Dick Sargent????) and the totally hilarious scenes in the toy shop when Serena puts an Indian outfit on him... some of Dick York's best comedy work.

(4) The first appearance of Serena as a sultry Mink Coat clad vixen..a lifetime away from the go go dancing hippy rocker of later season..a nice view of a character starting to be developed.

(5) And of course the introduction of Tabitha...the most adorable baby on sitcoms in the whole 1960's decade!!

All in all one of Bewitched's finest half hours

One of my favorite episodes, definitely. I love the Darrin/Endora scene, it's just so great. Dick York is so great in this episode, as is everyone else (especially Eve Arden, whose character gets my vote for one of the best one-shot characters in Bewitched history). And the scene between Sam and Darrin is just beautiful. Dick and Liz both put forth such a natural performance.

Yes I love the "I'm a father, I'm a mother" dialogue too but the absolute howler there is when the wonderful Eve Arden then comes in and interrupts with "well now that we've all identified ourselves she needs some rest" Totally hilarious and delivered as only Eve Arden could do it....where are the character actresses like her nowadays on television??????????

:yeahthat Not only was the EM/DY chemistry in full force, there was the touching scene where Endora tells Darrin he has a daughter. They cry and even hug. That was so sweet. :love:

This episode, along with the episode when Darrin first finds out that Tabitha is a witch, are strong performances by all, but Dick York in particular to me. I find it kind of sad that he never seemed to be regarded as the fantastic actor he truly was. Also, the performance of Liz and Dick in "A is For Aardvark" is really touching and tremendous. The chemistry between them on this show is unmatched by any other couple in sitcom history, if you ask me. :)

Hi Lisa! Dick York was/is a criminally underrated actor. He could play it all - comedy, drama, romance - and do it WELL. Even physical comedy - despite a badly damaged spine. No one could play romance like he did. Most likely it is because he was happily married for over 40 years to a woman he loved very much. It just shone through. No knock on EM, but he was the best acting partner she ever had. No one before or after that even came close.

I agree, Monika...the thing that disappointed me sometimes when I would hear interviews with Liz is that she often did not compliment DY or seem to give him a lot of credit (if you know of a quote to the contrary or anything, let me know, because I must have missed it) but I'm almost positive she did praise DS and I know she was closer to him in real life than DY but I get the impression that everyone's admiration of DY and much criticism of DS's portrayal of Darrin Stephens really irked her. Also, in DY's time of need when he was hurting financially and deathly ill, she did not reach out to him (as I understand it anyway) and I find that very sad and unfortunate. I still really appreciate and admire Liz but certain things did disappoint me-I won't deny that.

I completely agree, Lisa -- from everything I've read, everyone ELSE on the set: Agnes Moorehead, David White, Kasey Rogers, Sandra Gould, Erin Murphy, Paul Lynde, and even EM's then-husband, Bill Asher, had nothing but praise and admiration for DY. Even DS said (in Herbie J. Pilato's book Bewitched Forever): "He was excellent as Darrin." DY himself always spoke glowingly about EM, so I don't know why he seemed to irritate her so much. All her life, she was never in want and was very well-off financially. She could have (and SHOULD HAVE, in my opinion) helped him out in his time of need. What a shame.

That bugged me too, seems like she would have reached out to him. Unless it was too hard for her to deal with or something.
