I've made a decision... [Archive] - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

Images are no longer are allowed in signatures, the image code has been disabled. You can have text or smilies I believe in them though. It was a tough decision, but I believe it is the best choice for the boards as it continues to grow.

Most of you come here I think to chat and socialize and less to look at pictures (which you can continue to view by attachments).

The signature rule was constantly being abused, and there was no way to police it. I couldn't put a limit on the length of a signature, the amount of images in a signature, or the size of the images.

I want these boards to be like DVD Talk as far as popularity and speed. They allow attachments and signatures, but they don't allow images in any signatures. You will find very few boards larger than the SO boards that allow images in signatures, it just slows everything down when people are constantly dowloading stuff.

Attachments will continue to be allowed - but they will display as links and not download automatically. This gives people the choice of downloading them or not.

Some of you may leave because of this, I understand. I want to say thank you for your posts in the past and wish you the best of luck in the future.

Good God people, do you pay to post here? You might have donated something, but ULTIMATELY TJ pays well over enough money every month to run and keep these boards up for us people. Without this place, I wouldn't have all these friends all over the country as I did before my online life. And I thank TJ for giving me that chance. The POINT of these boards are to get communication and information across to other people, not to make us 56K users suffer with slow loading pages. We had a signature rule, but you ultimately abused it well enough to have it taken away. TJ told the board time and time again. I guess more of you should have been listening. If you don't like it, well then don't let the door hit your ass on the way out. Make your own boards will all thses extra features and pay a huge bundle of money every month and see what it's like. I know it's none of my business, but it's pissing me off that people are bitching and moaning because they have a new rule enforced. Be glad that you don't have to pay just to come and browse these boards. There's more important things to worry about than not having a signature full of images.

All the little brats that are whining and complaing about the sigs. being cut out should pay a $10 dollar monthly fee to be able to use the feature. You wanna talk about fair? TJ offers this site absolutley free of charge.. but is it free to him? No! To use an old saying, your "biting the hand that feeds you."

The donations were just not there, I received enough to cover maybe 2 months... which was a bit disappointing since there are almost 15,000 members.

If anyone wants a refund on their donation, you can e-mail me and I will send it back to you immediately.

The one thing about siggies was that it was a statement we made about ourselves, part of our identity. It's disappointing that this thing is forever being rescinded. I don't want anyone to leave on account of this.:(

I do realize that some people may have abused this priveledge (I hope I'm not one), but I think we should be able to post things within reason. I have gotten many compliments on my siggies and wish to continue, and believe many people feel this way.

I personally don't mind. After all, this board is for discussion and picture attachments can lend more to discussion than pictures in a persons siggy can...even without the space that is taken up by images, this board is probably still very costly to maintain. Most other boards I go to have smaller avatars and one picture (if any) at the most in a person's signature. I'm just glad I can go to this board to talk about my favorite sitcoms and other things.

Only 24 people made donations, it just wasn't enough.

For the past 3+ years these boards have been online, the money has come out of my pocket! I had never asked for any donations, nor had anyone EVER asked if they could help out.

I've been searching on the internet for like 20 minutes now and I can't find any board that is as big as this one that allows you to have pictures in signatures. Even some boards I clicked on allowed no signatures at all, not even text.

The GSN boards do, and they're just like these, but then a network pays for those.

If I new the siggy's were gonna be taken away, I would have tried to scrape up some money to send. The option of giving people who donate the ability to have images in their signatures and other bonuses may be an option as I first said when I began taking donations.

The newest version of this message board software is still in beta stages, so I am not ready to upgrade it yet.

Yea, as long as we have our dedicated SO users, we can rebuild Chit Chat and make it a great place to post again. Don't worry if all those people leave TJ. I bet you most of them will return within 72 hours. :lol: This place is addicting, lol. And if not, good ridence. They only cluttered the board. For the longest time, I felt like such an outcast. With people joining left and right, I almost stopped posting. I slowed down so much from my normal posting from last year. I just didn't fit in right with some of those newbies as I did with my old friends. There's only a handful of us original ones left. Now don't get me wrong, there are still a lot of great people here who joined recently also, it's just that a lot of them really weren't SO material. For all those people that joined within the last year or so and aren't leaving, kudos to you. It proves that you do care about this site and all that TJ has done to make it a so-called 'online paradise'. :clap:

Well, I'm not going to give up on Sitcoms Online. I actually stumbled upon this website but I'm glad that I did. It gives me a place to meet new friends and talk about stuff that's going on these days. ;)

I will admit, I loved making pictures for my signature. But signatures are NOT what SO is about. I agree with whatever decision TJ makes. It's HIS site. Not ours. We are simply guests at his site. I will definately NOT be leaving. SO is an amazing message board with or without signatures. I love the people here and will continue to vist regularly, like I have been.

Ya know.. if siggy pics are going to be an option for people who donate to the site, TJ might wanna make it an option only for the month they donated or something like that.. otherwise people will be donating a penny just to be able to have a pic forever and it'll be exactly the way it was before.

I don't think anyone will leave the boards over this. I think those who are saying it now believe it to be true; but, as everyone knows, this board is addictive.
It offers something for everyone. I've been around the web and back, and I really believe that no other website rivals Sitcoms Online.
Nobody really likes change, but people will get used to the new signature rule in time. No one is doing TJ any favors by coming here. We come here for ourselves--because we enjoy it.
Remember that this board is free and a one-person operation. Try to understand TJ's situation. He's not doing this to bust them. It's a matter of money. I'd hate to see the site close down. I've seen it happen before with other sites.
I, for one, am grateful that Sitcoms Online is here--siggys, avators--or not. It's about the actual posts and camaraderie for me.

Oh WTF. Yah, Im pissed, but after reading all 10 pages Ive started to get over it. I liked all the signs-- I was a sigaholic! And now theyre.... boring. But if TJ did decide to allow us the option for having signs for a price, I would donate. These boards arent cheap.

Okay, little flamies coming out of this post. I've had a few computer problems, so if I'm extremely pissy here, it's not pms, just irritation at my computer.

I don't get the whole bitching over 'Ohmigawd, I'm gonna leave cause I don't have this fancy picture in my sig anymore. blah blah blah'. Yes, I loved my sig. I love quite a few sigs on this board, but the way I look at it. Would I rather lose the site or lose the sigs? You put an option like that up and I will gladly say lose the sigs. I'm gonna miss sig pics, but I'm not gonna get all huffy and pissy and leave because they aren't there. Hello, we still have avatars. Be glad they're still here. If another option should come up, do we get rid of the avatars or lose the site, I would gladly pick getting rid of the avatars. However, if another choice popped up and it's either paying for the site or losing the site or leaving, that's when I would leave. I'm not saying it's gonna become a paying site next month and you have to pay to get in, but I'm just saying losing sig pics aren't that bad now.

Be glad you got to have the pics this long. And if you leave because of something this f'n small, I'd say you were here just to see your sig pic all along. Goodbye to those that leave. I hope you find another nice and groovy site that lets you have sig pics, avatars, and it be a good site. This is a good site. Yeah, got a few buttholes mixed into the good ones, but hey, it's still good.

Well, that's my two cents. Take it however you want. Just my opinion.

Yeah... this is the best message board I've seen (especially in the area of variety). I also like the easy-to-use format. And the easy-to-read large type. Some message boards have kind of small print- hard on the eyes after a while.

I'm also glad I could afford to make a donation. I hope it helped.

I've never cared about, or have had much interest in the sig pics, so I can't empathise with all of these dramatic exits and complaints. I understand being upset when somethng you like suddenly changes but the lack of appreciation and disrespect being shown towards TJ is, well, nauseating. I see that many of you have taken back your earlier outbursts, so that's better.

Now I'm going to make a small excuse for myself about something that you, TJ, said earlier in this thread. I gladly made a donation/payment when you asked for it. As far as I'm concerned we get a lot for our buck around here. I've always told you and the members that it's a great, and well run site. Unfortunately though, I had always assumed that the board payed for itself quite well. I incorrectly thought that the number of members and hits added up to money in some revenue way or another. Otherwise I certainly would have offered to anty up without you having to ask. I intend to continue sending in something every couple of months or so from here on out. I wish I would have understood sooner how this board is financed, or not financed. Sorry about the oversite.

When I first came back and saw my URL'S teared to shreads, I was upset. I was planning on posting an upset post. But then after I read this whole thing... it's not bad. I'm glad we still have the boards. Sigs with pics have been alot of fun... getting new blends, everyone who went "I love your sig!"... even the best fight (in my opinon) was about sigs (the "Joyce has a porny sig" one :lol: )

I don't really care that the sigs are gone. I mean if people are leaving just because they can't post pics in there sigs then why bother comming here in the first place, I mean I'm sure they were fun to put on and I enjoyed most of them, but thats no reason to leave. SO is a message board to discuss your favorite sitcoms, or to talk about things like sports, music, movies, ect. ect. Alot of people have made friends here, so there are lots of benefits to posting on SO. I'm not mad at TJ for asking for are feedback on this, but remember the final decision is his and his alone, they may come back or they may not, lets just keep enjoying to post on SO with or without sig pictures. I don't have any money to donate at this time, but I will do so in the future.

I would also like to Thank TJ for his hard work running this site, its been very enjoyable to me, keep up the good work TJ!

I PMed TJ after he OFFERED to give people refunds of their money who donated if they wanted. I donated money because I love the options on this board, well previous options. And I had been here a long time. After I donated some of MY money (which I didn't have to) about a week later the boards turn to crap. I asked TJ for my money back which he offered to do, and then he tells me the text in my signature is a picture. Text making a picture, actually, it's not an image file of any type. Just text. Then he tells me to take it out if I want my money back.

How unfair is that? Members who haven't donated can have those in their signatures, but it costs me to have it. I did not HAVE to donate money, I did it because I loved these boards and wanted them to stay just the way they were.

UNFAIR!!!!!!!!!!!! :rolleyes:

That's the last thing we should do. Yoo weren't here way back when, but there was a time where we couldn't even have pics in posts.

I first registered back on 11-07-2000 under MTMFan4Life, but I don't remember that far back if there were siggys or not. I left because I didn't make any friends, except for the one I had who suggested that I register here. Only god knows why I came back.

Woah, I go away for two days then get on in the short moment I have to spare (I'm still at camp) and I find out the boards have been very busy. lol. I'm known for loving siggies, everyone knows that, I am a little upset but not much. I knew that was coming way ahead of time, when everyone (included myself) started complaining about them, that's when I knew they'd go. BUT that doesn't mean I'm going to leave, I probably won't post here no where near as often as I used to though, because it looks like everyone's leaving (which is their choice.). Well I better go, I've only got about 10 minutes. lol.

The old siggys were black and white, non centered, no pictures, no colors.... boring

Express who you are through your posts. You don't need a siggy or a avatar to define you, you define yourself through what you write.

We are probably going to have to turn off one of these features completely in order to keep the server running smoothly, so which would you prefer having?

If you don't have images in your signature, you would still be able to have a text signature.

Also, (geez I'm taking a lot) if he allows both attatchments and siggys... who knows? The server may crash and there may not be any S/o. And if it doesn't crash we could encounter problems... too many images for the server to handle. *shrugs* (I may be totally wrong here) But I'm willing to lose some images if it will keep S/O up and running smoothly.

Will I miss the pics in the siggys? Yes, but it's not worth leaving over. Besides, I can understand why TJ took away this option. Like Chris, I have a slow dial-up connection that has problems downloading multiple pictures. No, I'm not saying that everyone should have to suffer because of a few, but there should be some middle ground. Like others have said, we still get avatar sizes that not many other forums will give you, so leaving the avatars and taking out the siggy pics looks like a decent middle ground to me. People abusing the siggy rules that he pointed out several times did not help the situation, I'm sure. I do appreciate the amount of money TJ has spent on keeping this board running. He could just say the heck with everyone's whining and just shut the place down, but he hasn't. I have a small job now where I will be making a bit of cash on the weekends, so I will probably be sending TJ a donation. Thanks, TJ.

This website moved really slow for me cause everybody had a picture in their siggy and now it's moving fast for once. But if you people are leaving over a siggy, well that's just plain sad.

I see my sig when I hit the preview button. I don't care. I was standing up for my right to express myself through my sig. And a few people were doing the same and then our sigs were taken away. God, they weren't even that bad since TJ fixed it so they only show up once per page. I don't see what the big deal was with the pics like that. My dads computer is slow as hell with 56k and they were showing up just fine on his.

Can't you walk into a hospital emergency room and get another prescription? If you have a life threatening situation, or even one that will cause you great discomfort, you should be able to get a doctor to write a prescription. I once had an accident and was driven to a hospital emergency room. They were very nice and, it was clear, would have treated me regardless of my ability to pay. The community authorities will intervene, if alerted, to stop a sick person from going untreated.

Oh, I know I'm a bitch. I have an attitude problem-one of the many things wrong with me, but at least I tried to stand up for something that I wanted. And then I get sh*t on for it. I was trying to make a statement so we could keep pics in our siggys. I even came up with a compromise that everyone who posted would have to sign so they have to follow the rules otherwise the sigs could just be shut off completely, but no. No one wants a compromise they all wanna whine and complain about everything. I'm tired of fighting a losing battle.

Not if they don't make my inhaler anymore. Thats what I said before. They don't make it anymore so now I'm cut off and nothing else helps when I can't breathe so yeah I'm kind of screwed. Yay! Now i'm screwed health wise. :clap:

I guarantee you that they make working inhalers, even if they don't make the exact one you were using anymore. The medical community has not decided to stop treatment of asthmatics. Go to a doctor and get a new prescription for one they do make, and if you can't afford it, or can't get permission from your parents, go to a hospital emergency room. I absolutely guarantee you that it is possible for you to get a working inhaler of some type.

Trust me if go to the doctors or the hospital where I live I'll be dead quicker than you think. The hospital emergency room tried to kill my mom the last time she was there. They thought she was unconscious, but she wasn't and she heard a nurse and doctor saying how they didn't have something hooked up right and it could've killed her if they didn't plug it in right away. Screw ups. I hate doctors in the first place. My mom was on the phone with my doctor already when I was trying to sleep, but couldn't because I can't breathe. I have two inhalers one that actually worked and helped me breathe (which is no longer being made now) and the other never helped me in the first place. First he says oh their the same exact thing and then an hour later he's like their different. And now I'm supposed to take it 4 times and much as I took the other one. Bullsh*t. Doctors just wanna make money they don't care if you're sick or not. Many times I've sat in the waiting room for 2 hours when they weren't even busy. Maybe it's because we don't have insurance I don't know, but it's stupid. I can't believe they stop making the only thing that actually gave me just a tad bit relief especially in the summer? I get twice as bad when it's hot outside and it's been like 90 here. So now I can't even go outside because I'll have a big attack and start twitchin' and sh*t. I'm screwed and thats all there is to it. I oughta just kill myself fast and quickly so I don't have to suffer like this. Gasping for air isn't my idea of a fun time.

I'm sorry for the giant rant about how my life sucks even more, but none of you have actually seen me when I get giant attacks. I mean they are pretty bad and since I have bad allergies it's gets even worse. Oh well, not like any of you care about my problems. I'm screwed, end of story. It's been fun. :wave:

Doctors vary widely in competence, but some are competent. I've run into both types. Without the inhaler, or with a weak inhaler, you know for sure that you are going to experience a lot of discomfort. Going to the doctor, you will eventually get something better, even if you have to make a fuss to get it. If you keep on saying, "This other inhaler doesn't help me," they will eventually try a different brand. If some doctor seems unhelpful, you need to fire him and get another. If your parents aren't helpful, go to the emergency room without them. There are worse things than sitting in an emergency room for two hours. Bring a book. If nothing else works, call a social services agency. I have had terrible frustration getting some doctors to do what I want, but between whining loudly, and switching doctors, I can always eventually get what I want. Ask people nicely for what you need, and if that doesn't work, insist, and if that doesn't work, ask them not nicely. The fact is that they make all kinds of inhalers, not just two types, and now you have to work to get one that helps you. If you continue to just say, "I'm screwed," then you will be, but only because you wouldn't do the work to fix your situation. I know it's very scary, but you will only fail if you give up. Believe me, I've been in similar situations and I know.

First, this isn't Florida okay this is South Jersey. The doctors here don't give a sh*t. And I can't go by myself, I don't have a car or a license so what am I gonna do, hitch? Yeah, good idea then I'll get raped in this crappy town. I don't care anymore I just wanna die anyway. Maybe it's for the best.

And the only friends I have with cars are off at college so it's kind of hard to ask them. I don't have a job so how am I gonna pay for the medication? I'm tired of everyone's perky perspective. I'm pessimistic, hasn't anyone noticed that yet? I don't wanna find another inhaler I like my old one. It was better. I've been through a lot of inhalers before then I finally found that one because nothing else helped so don't tell me this. I'm tired of switching every year it's getting obnoxious. Everytime I find an inhaler that works I get switched to something that doesn't. I'm tired of talking about it. I hope I die at 4 so I don't have to hear this crap anymore. :rolleyes:

Not trying to be sarcastic, but may I suggest a phpBB or an Invision board? That way there are no uploading pics at all. It would sure cut down download time. And then there would be nothing to fight about. TJ, do you pay for Vbulletin? If so, you shouldn't have to pay for something that you can get for a free download like phpbb or invision board. Paying for a board is just nonsense especially since there are ad free (or you can add ads if you like) boards you can download for free. Maybe you should check into those then all you would have to pay is for the hosting service and not the board itself.

Oh, no, I'm not being perky, I'm simply telling you the truth. I've been walking around the planet (in various states as well as Florida) for a long time. I've run into doctors who are no good and people who try and thwart me. If you want an inhaler that works, go to the doctor. If your parents won't help, then find a way to get there. You're 19 years old and can do it if you put your mind to it. If you'd rather tell yourself how bad your environment is than doing the work to change it, then your situation will stay the same.

:lol: If you think sympathy for you is going to get us back off and signatures reinstated, you're wrong. There have been hundreds of people on these boards over the past 3 1/2 years saying "I might not live, so don't push me over the edge," and "Say one thing and I'm gone." If you leave, well then good luck and god speed. Don't come crawling back saying you were just mad that day and you want us to forgive you again. Some of you may think I'm stupid for saying this, but trust me folks, this has happened time and time again. Ask any of the older members, they'll back my up 100%. Trust me, you won't be getting any sympathy out of me or anyone else who's smart enough to realize what you're doing.

Why should we all leave? Just because you're unhappy with the surrent situation? :( It's your fault you got the signatures totally banned from here, text and all (Or so I'm noticing). You couldn't handle having only text in your signature, so you threw a tamtrum and started telling everyone to stick in that annoying binary code into signatures when you knew damn well the rule was 15 LINES OF TEXT MAX.
