Port Charles has officially been canceled by ABC, according to TV Guide. Here's the article from http://www.tvguide.com/

PORT CHARLES CANCELLED
The nail is finally in the coffin. ABC announced today that Port Charles, the six-year-old spinoff of General Hospital, will air its final episode on Oct. 3. ABC Daytime President Brian Frons, a strong supporter of the supernatural soap, announced in an official statement, "This was an extremely difficult decision. We were very pleased with the creative execution of the show...PC allowed us to develop a wonderful stable of talent in front and behind the camera." PC will end with its next book, "The Gift," which premieres July 7. Frons adds that ABC will make efforts to absorb the departing cast and crew into other ABC daytime shows.

Only days ago, TV Guide Online spoke with several ABC executives who were enthusiastic about PC's future. Surrounded by scripts for the book slated to premiere in October, PC executive producer Julie Carruthers was in "the mindset of moving forward." PC's first Emmy nomination for outstanding drama series this year also seemed to extend the lifeline for the ratings-challenged sudser. But in the end, the financial challenges of producing the 30-minute soap led to its cancellation. The show, which is currently in hiatus, will not go back into production.

This is sad news indeed, i shall miss this show greatly. I for one thought that the Emmy-Nomination as "Best Drama Series" would help the show get renewed. I am sad and depressed. Hopefully many of the series stars can be intergrated into the remaining ABC Soaps. I hope that ABC decides to do "A Daytime To Remember" again, where they show classic repeats of "AMC", "OLTL" and "GH". The previous installment aired in 1995 after "Loving" was canceled and was hosted by Reba McEntire.

I'm very upset over the news. I started watching PC during Tainted Love a couple of summers ago, and I quickly fell in love with the show. It's my favorite soap and one of my all-time favorite television shows. I'm definitely going to miss it.

I wonder if come October will SOAPnet return to showing Port Charles Flashback. They could... I guess.

If anyone is wondering what I'm talking about, back when SOAPnet first launched (January 2000) they aired repeats of Port Charles from the beginning, but around 2001/2002 they began airing just the arcs (starting with the popular Tainted Love) and altogether stopped around the time SOAPnet added Dynasty.

I could see them bringing it back, unless they decide to air another half-hour classic soap (Edge of Night, Loving, Capitol, among others).

I wonder if they're planning on getting rid of Knots Landing and Port Charles? The KL run is being sped up with two airings a day, and now with the cancelation of PC ... I remember reading that Another World was the most requested daytime show and that Dynasty was the most requested primetime show - and they came to SoapNet. I also remember reading (though it might not be true) that The Edge of Night was the second most requested daytime show, with Melrose Place & Dallas being the other most requested primetime shows. Maybe they'll add Dallas and The Edge of Night? I've read that SoapNet is talking with P&G (which owns Another World) about adding more soaps to it's schedule, and P&G owns Edge.

It was also mentioned in a recent article that TPTB have given the go ahead for planning of another SoapNet.

Hmm. Another SOAPnet. Should be interesting.

I could see SOAPnet adding more classic soaps, since they're down to two primetime soaps, with odds are, KL on it's way out. They just did the same to Falcon Crest. Two airings a day, then dropped.

I would love for them to add Dallas. I'm ready to see that again, it's been a few years since I last watched it on TNN, and they of course dropped it when it became The National Network.

I'd like to see any classic soap opera, which is why I'm very much enjoying Ryan's Hope and Another World. Sure beats today's soaps.

From what I understand Soapnet said that when ABC stops airing PC, then they will too, there are petitions at some PC groups to get them to air the show from the beginning.

I guess they had decided to cancel the show no matter if they had won the emmy or not.

Here's a great column from tvguide.com about PC:

Six years ago, a little show named Port Charles burst onto the airwaves. The brainchild of Richard and Carolyn Culliton, it had arisen victorious from the stack of proposed spinoffs of the highly popular drama General Hospital. Set in the same little waterfront town, it followed the lives of several resident doctors as they pursued love, leisure and a scalpel in the hospital's halls. Three years ago PC, which had created a loyal fan following but never garnered high ratings, chose a new direction. Tapping into the popular Latin concept of the novella, the show repackaged itself as a series of books — each three-month arc a self-contained story highlighting specific characters and themes. The last episode of each arc offered a definitive ending that flowed into a new chapter. In its third book, PC focused its plots around an immortal being, a vampire, who had left his true soulmate behind and was determined to reunite with her once more. The show liked its newfound lifestyle and remained faithful to it until its end. During its short lifespan, PC was never afraid to turn away from convention, to take a risk and reinvest itself to stay afloat. It didn't protest when its production schedule was shortened by six months, forcing it to produce a whole year of storylines in half the time. The cast and crew valiantly rose to the occassion and were rewarded with the ultimate prize, their first nomination for outstanding drama series by their peers this past May. PC will play for the last time on Oct. 3. Although we'll be sad to see it go, we'll always remember the depths it was willing to go to bring a fantastical world to light.

I'm so selfish. Here, I find out Port Charles is being cancelled, disappointing many fans all over the place, and all I can think about is MY soap will now be the lowest rated. What a drag!

You're not selfish, you have a right to your opinion. Maybe if PC didn't do supernatural stories, it wouldn't have been canceled. jmo

Well then if that did it in then Passions is next on the chopping block because they do supernatural stories and Days of Our Lives has too.

It is because only half of the affiliates carried PC, and some of the ones that did aired it in the wee hours of the morning.:(

LOL, thanks. I never watched PC, but if I tried to watch it, supernatural stories wouldn't keep me interested.

That wont be why Passions is canceled or will be. Passions lost it's touch after Josh Ryan Evans passed away. The show isn't any good right now. I hope NBC does cancel Passions but it wont because they are stupid people. How Days of Our Lives is still on surprises me. John ruins that show imo.

Here's what I think SoapNet should do...

First of all, when "Port Charles" is cancelled, dump it for a LONG time, maybe two or three years, so that fans can have a high desire to want it back. In PC's place, air a classic show in ABC's vaults already, such as "Loving." It was only a 30 minute show, so it would fit right into all of PC's old sluts. Then, when "Dallas" comes, give "Knots Landing" or "The Colbys" a break, and let them air elsewhere. "The Colbys" can go to a channel like the Goodlife TV Network, where they already air the primetime soaps "Flamingo Road" and "Homefront." If Warner Bros. would be unstingy, "Knots Landing" can go to TVLand, but I doubt that even if TVLand had the exclusive rights to it, they wouldn't air. They would plot against me. They are evil bitches. *slaps himself* But that is another topic. Anyways, "Knots Landing" could hopefully go to TVLand for a few months/years, so people who are fans and don't have SoapNet can see it again. Let's face it, SoapNet ISN'T a channel that is in high circulation. "Another World" should be aired two times a day, two different episodes a day. At the rate they are going now, it will take them 12 years to go through one run. "Ryan's Hope" has been on the network since 2000. I think they should go to their usual 1981 stopping point, and try something new. When PC is cancelled, they should start RH all over again from 1975 on the actual ABC network, in its old timeslot, before AMC. That way, young soap watchers can watch it as if it were a brand new soap. If it brings in good ratings, they ran run all the way till 2017, fourteen years after 2003. If the ratings aren't that great, and are just about TERRIBLE, they should still air it! Why? "Port Charles" brings in terrible ratings, and has been the #10 soap for years. At least since 2001. I'm almost positive that RH would at least beat "Passions" for its first week. Now of course, NONE of this will be happening because A: The world is plotting against me and B: God hates me. Have a nice day!

Jt...

There are a few "holes" in your theroies... ABC cannot air "Ryan's Hope" in the "PC" slot because that slot has been promised to local affiliates, and that is a promise that they would not dare break, as it would risk making the affilates angry and the network depends on thoes affiliates to air their shows.

Also i doubt SN is going to drop Knots Landing as it is a high rated show and actually Soapnet got letters from angry fans when they dropped KL to 1 airing instead of 2, which is why they recently gave it back 2 airings...

And Another World is aired 3 times a day...

Here's what i think they should do...

Drop "The Colby's" (who watches that anyways?) and replace it with an additonal airing of "Dynasty" ...

Drop "Ryan's Hope" and replace its airing's with another half-hour show, like "Loving/The City" or "Capitol"... One could air in one slot and the other in the second RH slot...

Replace the weekend "Soaptalk" marathon with a "Dynasty" marathon...

Drop "Soaptalk" to only 2 airings a day... one during the day and one in late-night...

Start rerunning "Port Charles" from its begining and then once its through its whole run drop it alltogether...

Drop "Soapcenter" all-togeter and replace it with another classic soap like "Santa Barbara" or "Edge Of Night"...

And with "Dallas" coming add a "Dallas" marathon in place of the Colby's marathon....

Also i'd like to see SN develope more original programming, like maybe a game show or biography show....

i watched PC from the beginning.
know why i quit?
because of two things. too many recasting of the characters and the stupidity of the stories.
putting kevin and lucy on the back burner, splitting them up. never getting into the big missed stories of the younger scott and rhonda and how karen came to be. or how ray conway affected rhonda and karen. joe and franks dad. jagger and karen.
if those ideas were touched on, it was after i gave up on it.
so many things to get into that i never saw. instead i got the lark character and the repeated recasts. this show sucked from a long time ago. i am not surprised. i hate it though, it should have lasted longer with so much from genaral hospital to work on plus it's own stuff.
it's a shame.

Hmm... too bad it's cancelled. I just saw a bit from 'The Gift' and the writers obviously put a lot into it cuz ratings were slipping. It was actually pretty good. After 'torn' and a little of 'Naked Eyes', it got really bad!! and wasn't it supposed to be about doctors anyways?? I hope ABC gets a new soap, and doesn't make it about vampires or what not (it's good if it's a weekly show, cuz they have more time to have things look cool, but a daily show can't do it)..

Does this show take place on earth? I was reading spoilers for the last episode and it says:

Casey told Ricky she may return to earth.

I know Passions is stupider, but at least it takes place on earth

Series finale this Friday PC fans.
