The family has a major suprise and Mallory get's a suprising phone call. Part one of two.
Changes
Scene 1. Mallory and Jennifer are in the kitchen
Jennifer. Boy, it sure is different without Alex here.
Mallory. Yeah, I guess but it is sure nice not to be the foil of Alex’s comments anymore.
Jennifer. Yeah, he was kind of mean to you.
(Andy walks in sulking)
Mallory. Hey Andy, are you feeling okay?
Andy. No, not really.
Jennifer. How about we go out for ice cream or something?
Andy. (sighs) no, I’m not hungry.
(Jennifer and Mallory give each other a worried look)
Mallory. Andy, I know you are going through a hard time right now, but things will get better I promise.
Andy. I hope so.
(Elyse comes in)
Elyse. Hey girls we need to have a family meeting now. Can you come into the living room now?
Both. Sure.
Scene 2 the whole family is sitting in the living room
Steven. Kids, I know you have been going through a lot of changes right now and this won’t make anything easier, but…
Elyse. What your father is trying to say is, we are moving.
All. WHAT?
Steven. I got this job offer in Providence, Rhode Island. The job pays very, very well. I will be the producer of their morning talk shows there.
Mallory. What about mom’s job?
Elyse. Well, we looked around for good architectural firm in Providence and I found a great one. It doesn’t pay quite as much, but with your father’s big promotion its not a big deal.
Jennifer. I don’t want to move! I like it right here in Columbus! I can’t believe you are doing this to me right in the middle of high school.
Elyse. I know Jen, it’s going to be hard for al of us. We have thought long and hard about this and truly believe that this is the right decision.
Mallory. Well what about me?
Steven. We know you are in college and have a lot of friends, so it is your choice if you want to join us in Rhode Island or not. If not, you’ll have to more out on your own and fend for yourself.
Mallory. I’ll move in with Nick then! I am not going to Rhode Island. I don’t want to be transferred to some isolated island!
Jennifer. Mallory, Rhode Island is a state.
Mallory. Oh.
Steven. Elyse, do you think she shold move in with Nick? Maybe we shouldn’t move.
Elyse. Steven, give it some time.
Steven. Well Andy, what do you think about the big move?
Andy. I don’t care.
Elyse. Okay then.
(the phone rings)
Mallory. I’ll get it! I need to take my mind off things.
(picks up phone)
Mallory. Hello? Yes. Uh huh. No, are you serious? That’s impossible. Please tell em your joking. Oh, okay then, bye.
Elyse. Who was that?
Mallory. (disappointingly) Um, it was um (starts to cry)
Elyse. What’s wrong honey?
Mallory. I can’t tell you.
Scene 3 Jennifer’s room.
Mallory. Hey Jen can I come in?
Jennifer. Sure.
Mallory. Jen I’ve got to tell you something, but you have to promise not to tell anyone else.
Jennifer. Promise.
Mallory. You know earlier when I got that phone call? It was the doctor. Jen, I’m pregnant.
