Im looking to buy a cell-phone for emergencies and would like some recommendations. Like I said, I wouldnt be using it a lot (hell I dont use my land line)- I just want it for my car and for when I go out. I want the cheapest plans, but dont know which is the cheapest. Verizon, Cingular, AT&T...?

Be sure to ask about the battery - that is, how long you can talk before it loses its charge. I bought a better cell phone about a year ago, a Motorola Star Tac, which brought me from an hour and a half to four hours. It was still not very expensive, as these phones go.

I have Verizon.... I was going to look into Sprint, but the reception around here hasn't been too great. Verizon is alright, I suppose...

From what I've heard, it would be cheaper not to get a cell phone.

Whatever you do, do NOT go with sprint. They're horrible.

gotta disagree, i've been with sprint for nearly 2 years..their coverage, atleast in my state as well as most of the south, is perfect. Its Att and verizon that have alot of deadspots here, but i guess it really depends on where you are. back to the question, if its only for emergency, just get a pre paid phone from like walmart or something and there you go

You wanna get yourself a Nokia.
Don't get a cell phone on a contract. If you're only planning on using it for emergencies then you're much much better off on pay-as-you-talk.

Especially with Verizon... they have 1 and 2 year agreements. But if something happened and you wanted to switch with another service, there's a $175 early contract termination fee. Yikes.

Yeah. Contract phones are a bad idea.
I got a cell phone especially for keeping in touch with my mate Kirsty and I'm on a Pay-As-You-Talk program. It's quite expensive to call on the phone (I think its about 40p a minute) but if you were only using it for emergencies then this wouldn't matter. Text messages are only 9p which is perfect for me.

I have Virgin Mobile and there is no prepaid plan, you just have to put $20 on the phone every 90 days to keep your phone number. They charge you 25 cents per minute and 10 cents after 10 minutes. Text messages are 10 cents to send. I like it because I don't use my cell that much and it's not that expensive.
