I thought June Cleaver was a delightful and charming lady who realy was one of the most understanding people in sitcoms. I do think though that many times she was often not able to think for herself and relied on Ward a bit too much to solve problems that she was perfectly capable of solving.
She seemed nosy at times and was always over-protective of Beaver. (This IMO is especially true in the first few seasons) I think Ward was more "level-headed" where as June was more emotional in her parenting.
Her nervousness/anxiety is there and without Ward, I think the poor woman would have been a basket case because she'd want to be so understanding to everyone that she could never enforce real strong discipline had she been a single mother....(I think poor Larry Mondello's mother was the ultimate nervous wreck with her husband being away.) I think June needed Ward far more than Ward needed her.

June was a little too fussy. But I have to tell all of you, I grew up in the 50's and things in my home ran pretty much the same way!My mother stayed home to raise her 7 kids and worked hard doing it!But she never did housework in pearls! I think June is very charming! If a little naive! Times were really different then! I remember! But it was wonderful to come home from school and having my mom there! A kid really needs that! Some may laugh at that but it was always very comforting and nice to have a stable, regular "boring" life! I tried to do the same for my kids. Those really were "the good old days"!

With regard to June always wearing pearls, Barbara Billingsly insisted on doing this at all times because she was self-conscience about a wrinkle line in her neck that to her, looked like a scar.

Jack Natalie Wood had a similar problem. She had broken her wrist as a child and was very self- conscious of a bump that remained. So she insisted on wearing a bracelet on that wrist. I'm sure if you look at any pictures of her as an adult she will always be wearing a bracelet.
Thanks for the remark about the pearls! Very interesting!

I saw Barbara Billingsley interviewed and she said that she had a very long neck so the producers wanted the pearls?

I always had a crush on June Cleaver and found her very attractive.
Although her character was a little stiff she posessed the characteristics
of what I thought was the typical model mother of most families.
Of course she represents a figure in the "ideal" family but I still
thought it was credible enough for the most part.
I find that her wearing pearls and heels all the time added a certain
amount of class and dignity though women of today absolutely dress
much more casual around the house. I do believe as well that women
dress like that during that time. Seems overdressed for todays
standards but it was becoming during the shooting of the series then.

I thought June was the BEST. I didn't think she was whiny or overdressed, people constantly say that she was, but she wasn't FOR THE TIME! Maybe all mothers didn't clean in heels but I know they wore dresses most of the time. I think the main problem there is that she is compared to women and mothers today who don't care half as much about how they look as women then did. I know I wouldn't wear a dress everyday! But back then, it was just the way it was! People also thought she depended on Ward too much, but the truth is, she just followed the teaching of the Man is the head of the household, and let him take care of things...a teaching that has been since thrown out the window.

Wow, so very many opininated people on the board here. I for one feel that sometimes she should have handled things herself, but i do not think she was a whiny B*tch, nor do i feel sorry for Ward to have her as a wife, she was the perfect wife, she stayed out of Ward's way most of the time, she always had dinner ready on the table, she almost always greeted him at the door with a kiss and an arm to take his suitcase. If you ask me, Ward had it pretty dam good! She did the cleaning and the laundry, sure Ward had to deal with most of Beaver and Wallys problems, but he probably wouldn't have known they had any problems without June "snooping" through their things (i used quotation marks becuase she usually stumbled upon them while putting their clothes away or emptying the trash) Besides the fact that she was following what woman should do back then, she was pretty self sufficient, Ward sure as hell would never sew a button back onto Beaver's sweater, and i'm sure he wouldn't be making a cake for the boys to eat when they got home from school!! And what episode was it where Ward had to cook dinner and he burned it or he didn't make something too good? I dunno, but Ward sure couldn't take care of the boys in a physical sense, he just supplied the money and helped them with their problems and homework. Now, don't get me wrong, cuz i love Ward to pieces as well, i just am mainly stating that she was very useful to the family, and i don't think she was just there to be the worry wart of the family, mother's intuitions are usually #1 in my book.
Now, for where I stand on June Cleaver, I feel that if I could, I'd be a stay home mother as well, to care for the kids, if i felt comfortable in a dress, i would wear it, the perfect mother, the perfect wife, the perfect woman, the perfect person to run to when you need a shoulder to cry on. If that isn't what we aim for in this world, then i don't know what is. If I had a mom like June, in ANY sense, i don't think i would idolize her as much as i do. As far as i'm conserned, she's the #1 tv mom of ALL TIMES!!!

June Cleaver is one of my all-time favorite TV Mom's, she's second only to Carol Brady.
For June fans, the episode, June's Birthday is must-see. This episode is very heartwarming and if you don't feel anything when Beaver sees her not wearing the birthday blouse and they show her reaction, there must be something wrong with you.
Another side of June can be seen in The Perfect Father, where she tries to get revenge on Eddie for pushing Beaver around. She puts mayo on his sandwich after he told her not to.

I LOVE THAT EPISODE!!! It's so sweet! I especially love it because at first, she was going to wait for Ward to talk to Beaver for her, but she decides to do it herself...It's so sweet!

 I love that one too!!! It's so funny! I remember my reaction to her saying "Just for that, I AM going to put mayonnaise on his sandwich!" was you go girl! The funny thing is that when Wally comes home, he said "Eddie was sick, something about having Mayo on his sandwich"

Personally, a lot of times I think June needs to stop acting like a doormat and have people walk all over her. She never seems to stick up for herself or really yell about stuff. I think she's a little wimpy, but she's also very elegant! Sometimes a little TOO elegant like she has to dress up and wear a hat just to do downtown. She can be a little fixated about how she looks. But she is the "perfect" mother!

Since June was a character on a sit-com, a character written by men in the 1950s, its impossible to try to say she this that or the other. Barbra Billingsly was not playing herself, and ironically she was not a stay-at-home mom to her own 2 sons.

Very true! I posted a reply earlier about how I happened to like June's character...and not just because I'm a huge Barbara Billingsley fan...I just liked the character and the values she represented and all that stuff.

Did we soooo not read in Jerry Mather's book that she WAS infact just as close to June Cleaver as she could get?? Besides the fact that she was not a stay-at-home mother? Of course, she was different from June in other ways, but the boys (including Ken and Frank) always say that she is the spittin image (personality wise) of june cleaver. Now to me, that makes you just wnat to love her in general THROUGH June Cleaver, who doesn't wish she was their mother?
