We have a thread for casting that never happened, so I thought I'd start one for casting/characters that weren't planned, but happened anyway.

I heard that Reverend Jim on Taxi was only supposed to be a one-time thing, but he was so well-received by fans that they brought him back as a regular. I heard the same thing about Cliff from Cheers.

Not a sitcom but Julianna Margulies (Carol from "ER") was originally supposed to have successfully committed suicide in the series premier. Carol was well received so they brought Marguilies back.

Richard Kline, Larry on Three's Company, was only meant to appear in that show in one episode. However, he soon became a recurring character on the show starting towards the end of season two.

Wasn't Urkel the same way? Not intended to be the star of Family Matters, but did?

Dawsongirl, You stole my answer! LOL Anyway I've done this with "Gabaldi Bound" as well.Kevin and Vito were supposed just be one-shot guest roles for Drew Carey and Tony Danza but Vito became a regular while Kevin is now a recurring character.

On Wings, Antonio and Alex were all listed as guest stars for a period before being promoted to series regular. Casey was listed as a guest star for two or three episodes before being credited as a regular.

As someone posted in the other thread Donny Most didn't get the part of Potsie but TPTB liked him so much they created Ralph just for him.

Frasier Crane only to be in a hnadful of episodes but the producers really took a shine to him & added him to the cast. I believe Lilith started on the show with guest star status as well.

Ellen Foley as Billie on Night Court, only because Markie Post was on "Fall Guy" at the time & wouldn't be available until Night Court's third season.

BTW, In my previous post I was talking about Cheers, I also accidentally took the word "was" out of my post & I apologize for that as well.

On "Newhart", Larry, Darryl, and Darryl were only supposed to appear in one episode - the one in which Dick Loudon (Bob Newhart) hires them to dig up the body of a woman who was buried in the basement of the inn. (I think it was the second or third episode of the series).

The reaction to the 3 brothers was so overwhelming, that they became regular cast members.
