I was wondering if anyoen could answer this... I constantly pop my bones, i'm talking fingers, neck, elbows, back, knees... all of the above. Can that cause arthiteses? I would stop, but it's like if i don't crack 'em, they drive me crazy, almost hurts if i don't. Anyone got any ideas why?

Thank ya

Interesting question...
I jumped over to Ask Jeeves.com and asked if cracking knuckles can lead to arthritus, and they sent me to a page that had some info...

"What's really happening when you "crack" your knuckles is that you are either pushing the joint back into or out of its normal position. Joints are the meeting points of two separate bones which are held together by connecting tissues and ligaments. A thick, clear lubricant (made mostly of carbon dioxide and some nitrogen) called synovial fluid is found between the bones. When you stretch or pull your finger to get that desired popping noise, you are causing the bones to pull apart. Pressure is reduced on the synovial fluid and bubbles form that quickly expand and then burst - which is why you get that noise.

Not everybody's joints crack. Some people have a larger separation between the bones and some people can't relax enough to allow the bones to separate.
There is no scientific evidence that cracking your knuckles leads to arthritis. However, it can't be good to repeatedly push a joint beyond its normal physical range."

Thanks for stopping by TJL's medical clinic. Please pay the Nurse on your way out.

I also crack my knuckles a lot. Very bad habit, but it's, like, almost addicting.

I'm only guessing but I don't think it's a good idea to crack your entire body the way you described. It's wear and tear on your joints.
My brother has been cracking his neck for years. He actually holds his chin and head with his hands to do it. It's loud.
About 10 years ago, I read something in a medical Q&A newspaper column. A woman wrote in concerned about her husband's neck cracking. The doc replied that constant cracking of the neck can cause it to actually become loose. How's that for a thought?
I showed it to my brother, but he still does it. I expect his head to fall off one of these days.

I really hope that cracking your bones doesn't lead to athriteus cos I've been snapping my fingers for as long as I can remember!
I know that it can't be good for you though. Sometimes my fingers just seize-up and I can't crack them - the only way to get them moving again is to smash them off a wall or the edge of a table so it loosens them up a bit and I'm able to snap them back into place. It can be pretty scary at times - on one occasion the index finger on my right hand seized-up completely and it took me nearly 30 minutes to get it moving again!
My right elbow has a habit of seizing-up aswell, as does my neck. I think this has a lot to do with my job - it's R.S.I. or something.
My back gets stiff quite often and I have to snap it to relieve the discomfort. I know how I got like that though - I was at a concert when I was 16 and some ba$tard in the crowd kicked me in the back and it's never been right since.
If I ever find that guy I'm gonna knock all of his bones outta place and see how he likes it!!!!

I only pop my fingers and toes. I've been doing that for about 3 years now, and my fingers for about 2. I'm trying to stop though. Because a teacher at my school got arthritus for popping his finger knuckles all through high school. He also has metal in his fingers. And when it's cold his fingers get fat. :(

I stopped cracking my fingers, because it made them look fat for some reason...

But for everything else, it cracks. I'm a Ballet dancer, so when I dance, well... everything cracks, lol. Especially when I bend back to do Port de Bras, all you can hear is everyone's back

I know this sounds weird.. but I am a serious cracker! lol.. I crack EVERYTHING.. neck, ankles, elbows, fingers, toes, my index finger... especially my neck, i take my hand and just... crack. Whenever i start to crack my neck, Jonathan will go , "start that cement truck up!" cause i crack my bones all the time. My luck i'll be walking down the street one day and all my bones will just fall off.
