I was just browsing imdb.com and came across this and thought I would post it here.

David E. Kelley: Nobody is blaming the creator of the Emmy-winning legal drama The Practice for being mad at certain ABC executives this week. When it was announced that the series would be moved to the Monday 9pm period, Kelley had a gut feeling that things would be ugly ... and they were. His show lost almost 4 million viewers instantly. Face it, going up against proven winners Joe Millionaire, Third Watch, and Everybody Loves Raymond was a dumb move in an industry that values shows on ratings points. According to the prolific producer in a report in Daily Variety, "They've killed it with one fell swoop." The Practice isn't really over yet. It just needs more respect from ABC. Most people record their favorites and watch them later whenever a scheduling conflict occurs. Unfortunately, those viewers don't count, yet they just might be the most important players in the game.

God, I'm a dork. The above post was from tvnow.com and here is the imdb.com article. Sorry about that.

Kelley Blasts ABC's 'Practice' Swing

ABC's decision to move David E. Kelley's The Practice from Sunday night, where it generally won its time period, to Monday night, where it wound up in fourth place this week, was denounced by Kelley on Tuesday. In an interview with the Los Angeles Times in which he implied that ABC had made the move in an effort to strengthen its hand in advance of contract-renewal discussions, Kelley called the change "an act of stunning stupidity, which did all the damage it was meant to do." ABC Entertainment Chairman Lloyd Braun responded: "I understand emotions are running high right now, but it would be totally contrary to our interests to intentionally damage a show, and our schedule, to bring a series back at a cheaper price." Said Kelley in a separate interview with Daily Variety: "It's folly to try to guess what's in their heads because that would start with the presumption that there's something [in them]."

Kelley Hammers ABC for Moving 'The Practice'
Wed, Jan 29, 2003 11:30 AM PDT

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - ABC executives probably weren't thrilled with the performance of "The Practice" on its new night Monday (Jan. 27).

They've got nothing on the show's creator, David E. Kelley.

Calling the move of the series from Sunday to Monday "an act of stunning stupidity," Kelley suggests the network is intentionally trying to damage "The Practice's" ratings so it can gain an advantage in renegotiating the show's license fee with producer 20th Century Fox TV.

"When you try to guess what's going on inside their minds, it's dark and it's cavernous in there," Kelley tells the Los Angeles Times.

"The Practice" averaged about 9 million viewers Monday, finishing fourth in the 9 p.m. hour behind FOX's "Joe Millionaire," CBS' comedy lineup and NBC's "Third Watch." It had been drawing 11 million viewers a week on Sundays this season.

ABC chairman Lloyd Braun insists that the network's only motive in moving the show was to help launch new drama "Dragnet" at 10 p.m. Sundays.

"I understand emotions are running high right now, but it would be totally contrary to our interests to intentionally damage a show, and our schedule, to bring a series back at a cheaper price," Braun says.

ABC reportedly pays about $6 million per episode for "The Practice," which is in its seventh season. The show's license agreement with the ABC expires at the end of this season, and Kelley tells the paper that he wouldn't mind taking the show to another network.

Braun is stressing patience and believes the show's ratings will improve when "Joe Millionaire," which has dominated the hour recently, ends its run in a few weeks.

Wow. David E. has been having a rough time. First Ally McBeal gets booted, then his new show "Girls Club" tanks, now their killing "The Practice."
I had no idea that show was bringing in 11 million viewers on Sunday night. Actually, I had no idea it was still on!
Seems like a dumb idea for ABC to move it to a place where it will lose viewers. Kelley has a point, why move it if it's doing well?
If ABC is using this as a ploy to lower the value of the show when contract renegotiations begin, that would be pretty low. We'll have to wait and see.

I didn't know it was still on either. ABC is trying to kill it. May I say it is probably to make room for another reality show.

Well since Jenny has posted three times about this subject, I'll add some more thoughts...

I never understood the logic behind a networks idea to put a new show in anothers timeslot.
Whenever I tune in to watch a program that I look forward to watching, and some other show is there in it's place, I don't say "Oh goody! Some crappy mid season replacement show is where my favorite program should be! Well, I'll just have to sit down and watch the heck out of this mutha!"

Actually, I never have used the word "mutha," but you probably get the point.

I do agree that ABC probably wants to kill it. The show has been around for a long time, renewing it would probably cost them more thatn they would want to spend. I'm really sure Lara Flynn Boyle's asking price has shot through the roof since that tutu dress incident at the Golden Globes.

Kelley is also kidding himself if he thinks he'll move the show to another network. A six year old lawyer show? Not gonna sell.

Anyhoo Jenny, this ends my rant about a show I don't watch. Personally, I'm looking forward to seeing that new "Dragnet."
Ed O'Neil is the greatest.

;)

I don't watch all that many new shows, so I guess I'll refer to the shows I watch on TVL and the show I watch on N @ N. Once you get really used to a time slot, they always have to move it around and it takes so long to get used to a new slot. Like when N @ N moved Archie to 2 in the morning, I would always miss the first few minutes of it. I'm finally adjusting to the 2 a.m. time slot. You just wait, they'll switch around pretty soon.

Oh God, I seen a picture of Laura in that tutu. I think it was on Star Magazines website. I mean, come on. I hate to dress up in dresses, but if I was at least going to an awards show I wouldn't show up in no damn tutu.

If it's 6 years old, maybe it is time to end it. Idk. I've never really watched the show. If the show is starting to get weak, I say pull the plug. If it's still going a strong, it's still gonna spell a disaster with the new time slot.

Okay, I'm gonna post a pic of Laura's outfit.

That tutu incident was off the charts funny. Does the woman have any friends? Does she have a mirror?
Anyway, I love The Practice. I'm a faithful viewer from day one, which means I NEVER miss an episode. I tape all my shows, without fail, and watch them all commercial free.
This move to Monday is just a minor inconvenience for me, but I hope they haven't signed the death warrant for the show.
Trust me guys, it's a good show. One good thing about The Practice is that the cast started small and has remained that way. I love courtroom dramas. I loved Perry Mason as a kid.
The twists and turns on the cases are really wild. It's based in my hometown of Boston, which is always an added bonus.

I'm scared to even ask how much that outfit cost. You know how outfits cost. If she paid a ton of money for that outfit, I'm just gonna faint dead away right now. lol

She probably rented it at a costume shop, lol.
I have to think that she wore that outfit sort of tongue in cheek. I have to think that because the only other alternative is that she's lost her mind.
Maybe lack of food does that....maybe she was with wildman Jack Nicholson too long.

That dress was worn simply to get attention. If you can't be the best dressed, you might as well be the worsed. At least people will still talk about you.

LOL. How's the saying go? Even bad publicity is good publicity (in the entertainment industry anyway).

Love that picture of Lara Flynn, Jenny.

Great google moogle, can someone get that chick a sandwich?

I can count her ribs through that tutu.

That previous sentence may be the wierdest thing I have ever written...

;)

Another thing that may hurt the Practice being renewed is the heavy rotation the reruns get on FX. Wasn't that another show they sold to FX for a really cheap price? I think i remember Kelley being pissed about that.

I seem to recall something about that too, but I can't recall either. For those who don't know, Kelley is a former Boston lawyer, so I guess that's why he bases most of his shows there. Ally McBeal, The Practice, Boston Public. I don't know much about his last failed show though.
He can get as pissed as he wants. Remember, at the end of the day, he's sleeping with Michelle Pfeiffer. ;)

This is true. Although considering the amount of shows this man was writing at one time, when did he ever see his beautiful wife?

I'm glad you brought Michelle into the conversation. Think about it, you have a glamorous actress, not doing too many movies anymore, her husband who creates TV series, why don't they just do a show together?

Submit your ideas, we'll have a story meeting tomorrow.

Ten A.M good for you guys? Good. I'll bring bagels.

I am thoroughly freaked right now. Okay, I get this Parade paper in the Sunday paper and they had this question in there.

Whose idea was it for Lara Flynn Boyle to wear that horrid see-through pink tutu at the Golden Globes?

Hers. Boyle's publicists, stylists and other handlers tried to warn The Practice star that she looked like a prepubescent ballerina, but she wouldn't listen. "The worst thing about the outfit was that it showed that her puffed up lips are the curviest thing on her body," one attendee told us. But her on-again, off-again beau, Jack Nicholson, 65, apparently disagreed. "Isn't she great?" he was heard to say. Which was just the reaction Boyle, 32, was looking for.

Damn, all those people told her not to wear the ballerina costume and she still wears it. :faint:
