View Full Version : Why no Johnny Carson Tonight Show Reruns?!?!

For Christmas this past year, I was given the DVD collection of "The Best of Johnny Carson." There is so much quality stuff in there, that sometimes I just watch it again and again...

So, why doesn't N@N (which sucks), TVLand, or some quality cable channel pick up old reruns? Has Johnny got the show wrapped up so tight that no one of the younger generation will get to see the shows? There are people who are stars still today that are on there.

Perhaps the answer is very clear, and I just don't know it. However, I really wish someone out there could put these on late night TV. Leno and Letterman suck compared to Johnny...

Pav? Anyone??

Any idea? Will there EVER be more Johnny, Ed and Doc on TV? I hope so......

About 10 years ago (maybe a little longer), there was a syndicated program called "The Best of Carson". They took various segments from the Tonight Show (Johhny's monologue, "Carnac the Magnificent", "The Mighty Carson Art Players", etc.) and packaged them into a series of 30 minute programs that were shown mostly on independent stations around the country. The program was only in syndication for about a year.

It would have to be around 10 years... he left in May 1992.

For $100, you can buy episodes on tape. Yeah, I know- $100? And apparently it's only episodes HE hosted, because I tried to buy some that Richard Dawson hosted and none of them were available.

I was wondering about this too.

Although I've only seen clips, I will love to watch this show.

Reruns of The Tonight Show would be really popular, I think. But the people selling the Best of Johnny Carson tapes are probably making a mint.

By the way, my favorite show for a while there was just that infomercial for the Johnny Carson tapes. That was hilarious all in itself!

I loved the Tonight Show when Johnny Carson was still doing the show. As a kid in the 70's and early 80's I would be allowed to stay up to watch the show, but on the nights that Johnny was not there and guest hosts filled in, I had no desire to watch it.
My mother, who was so intent on making me the next big child star, wrote to the show in the early 80's, trying to get me on there. While they could not grant her request, the show did send me an autographed picture of Johnny and supposedly one of the pencils that Johnny played with on his desk. In my opinion, after 1992, the Tonight Show ended for me.

As for the rerun issue, I, too, would love to see them aired again. I remember watching and taping some of the Carson Comedy Classic shows that aired many years ago, as well as the numerous anniversary episodes. As was done with the Carol Burnett Show, where only the comedy skits were shown in a thirty minute format as Carol Burnett and Friends, so, too, was the Tonight Show. I was given the Best of Carson video set many years ago for Christmas and love to rewatch them, reliving the glory days of "the" best late night show on television.

Aside from the "Best of Carson" show that ran on the Family Channel for a while, Johnny has the full episodes locked away in a salt mine (yes a salt mine) somewhere in middle america. Its been speculated that there are other "lost" series there as well.

They make money when people buy it from the company rather then showing it. Cable companies are all about money these days. Why do you think N@N and TVL are the way they are these days?!?

I just went to the website last night (www.johnnycarson.com) and found some great stuff. But there is no way in the world I would pay $99.99 for ONE episode of the show.

I guess that's why it's not on the air. It's too freakin expensive...

Johnny Carson owns the copyright for the last twenty years or so of the Tonight Show when he was host. Many of the previous years were erased or not filmed at all, when it was broadcast live, and are gone for good.

Attempts to syndicate did not prove to be lucrative and I think his strategy is to save them and release collector's editions on DVD.

I would love for nik at nite to start at the very beginning and go through all 30 yrs.I would however a hefty amount of money. They won't even put on shows that don't have as a great fan base as Tonight show like Carol Burnett so it's not likely they would put on Carson/They would have to pay out alot to carson,McMahon,Severinson. The Directors, alot of money, and I mean alot. Each person on that show their lawyer and agents would negotiate a hefty some. That is the real problems for shows that have major stars like Alan Alda and mash and Carol Burnett they would have to offer alot because of their name and status that brings in money by associations with high level Entertainment quality.Seinfeld,Frasier, and eventually will and Grace if they reach legendary status they will be asking for the moon as well.

My birthday is this friday.... and hinted at the DVD collection.
Hopefully Ill get it.

I would love for this show to air in syndication.... maybe a "Variety Network" featuring UNCUT classic variety shows.... but it would probably be a premium-only channel like HBO or Showtime.

I would love it if they started showing it on tv again! I'd rather watch Johnny than Dave, Jay, and Conan combined.

I think the reason there is no reruns is because of fees. I think they would have to pay Johnny, actors and writers millions of dollars in order to air these shows. For a few years on the johnny carson website you were able to purchase single episodes. It cost 99.00 for one show then 79.00 for four other episodes a piece. Last year they took that off the website. I was going to purchase some episodes and they informed me that I wasn't able to purchase them. For whatever reason, the 4,000 episodes are placed 54 stores down underground in a saltmine in Kansas. I would love to see them air at least one old episode a week on NBC at night like when they air a classic episode of SNL on Saturday nights.
