Hi,
I am writing this post to the people who might purchase the Back to the Future Trilogy on DVD. There is many problems with brand new DVD discs sold with scratches and buffs that may harm the movie's performance. For example, a friend of mine went into a Wal-Mart and all of the discs were scratched. He returned them only to find that the third film was scratched, and so he kept returning them in the Help desk's presence and he eventually had to swap a good version of part three from another boxed set. Believe it or not, the same exact thing happened to me today. I bought the trilogy and went to my car (where I usually check to see if there is scratches) and the 3rd film had this big buff on it and a scratch that looked like a palm print. I went right back in and I had to open 3 packages before I had to swap a good version of the 3rd film. In the box where I got a great version of the 3rd film, the first film was infected.

The lady I talked to at Wal-Mart told me that many people have brought back the Back to the Future Trilogy DVD set because of scratches that shouldn't be there...especially on a brand new issue of the film. It's like they spilled discs on the floor or something. On the one I have now, I had to clean off a bunch of hairs on one of the discs. I grabbed a handful of my cotton shirt and with some of the shirt hanging out of the fist, I lightly ran it across the disc without any heavy contact. It lightly got rid of the small hairs (that can build up on the DVD reader lense) and has not left any signs of scratches.

Anyway, if you decide to get this wonderful classic, check your discs and beware. This is a great set loaded with stuff, so you want to keep this in your collection for as long as you possibly can.

NO! NO! NO!

DON"T BUY THIS SET!

The framing is off on Parts 2 and 3.
(the screen is not centered)

They are re-releasing it in February.
The filmmakers are pissed that they rushed the release of the discs knowing there was a problem.

Here check this out:

A lot of people have asked us about the mis-framing problem with the Back to the Future 2 & 3 DVDs. What appears to have happened is that the widescreen matting has been done in error, so that the image that appears on the disc is not correctly framed as it should be. There's a thread over at the HTF with screen shots illustrating this, so check it out if you're interested (note that the pictures show the R2 version, but the R1 transfer is the same). Here's the e-mail Universal is sending people about this issue:

"Thank you for your email. Universal Studios will exchange Back to the Future parts 2 and 3 for copies with the updated framing in late February 2003. You may send the DVDs back now or wait until February. Please send Back to the Future disks 2 and 3, without the case, and a letter with the following information: Name, Full Mailing Address, Daytime Phone Number, Reason for Return and Return Address. Send to:

Back to the Future DVD Returns
PO Box 224468

By the way, we also have a Canadian customer service number for people to call: 866-532-2202. Thanks to Bits readers Mark P. and Scott B. for sending that in.

I'm not going to purchase the set anyway because I only like the 1st movie. The sequels I didn't really care for.
Hey britt britt, I love that Christine quote in your siggy. Where did you find it? I've never seen it before.

Is this problem on all the DVD's? I bought the widescreen format and it seems to be okay visual wise. Is this on the widescreen format or on the regular format? Is there something I may be missing?

I do have the original trilogy in mint condition (VHS) so that is why I want to know if this problem is in all of the copies and if it is in the widescreen or full screen format.

Thank you and take care

I got the DVD's for Christmas and I'm actually watching the 2nd movie right now and there are no problems with it. I checked the other ones for scratches or anything and they appear to be fine. Did I just get lucky or something?

I bought my brother the set for his birthday and we watched one every night and when we got to the 3rd one in the middle it kind of froze and skipped alot, we took the disc out and it looked ok but when we kept trying to play it it did the same thing over and over again and when we tried it on my DVD player it ran fine.
