This show could never be done today

On Love That Bob, the women were beautiful, not very smart, and worshipped Bob. A male chauvinest dream show (pre women's lib) that could never be done today!

You are so right jon...they don't make them like this anymore. There are other shows from the same era, where you find your mouth hanging open, because they are saying or doing something you just can't beleive!!!! Some of it is pretty funny though.

It was a long time ago, but my recollection is that this show was extremely funny.

I agree it wouldn't be done today, but I don't think it was nearly as "sexist" as many imply. Bob usually got his comeuppance, for
example. The show deserves rediscovery on cable; it was indeed very funny.

The show was made over 40 years ago!! To watch the show and apply 2003 values to it is silly. It wasn't made predicting what things would be like in 2003 or to please rerun audiences so there's no point in being surprised by some of the things they say or do. Just enjoy a tv show from the golden age of television.

I don't think women today are less
likely to throw themselves at desirable
male objects, and they certainly seem to
have less self respect, allowing themselves to be beaten, abused etc. I fail to see where women today exhibit more self respect than when Cumming's show was on.

This is one show I'd happily buy a
set of DVDs containing all episodes.
I can't really think of any show during the
50s,60s and later that was as sophisticated and funny as this one. No one except Bob Cummings could have played Bob Collins. I never did like the renaming they did after it had been in reruns several years. Why they did that I haven't a clue. Its real name was simply the Bob Cummings Show.

I disagree, while both shows are among my favorites and very funny, on Married with Children all the women put the men in their place and of course, the humor was very raunchy that never could have been done in the 50's.

The main point why Love that Bob could never be done today was the women were portrayed as subservient to men, even though Shultzy and Margaret often put Bob in his place, you notice that Margaret was a stay at home housewife (or house sister to Bob) and Schultzy was portrayed as a homely "working girl" rather than "career woman". And the way the models all kissed up to Bob was pure fantasy-it could have been Bud's daydream on MWC so maybe theres the connection.

I think that, even more than "Married With Children", a similar series to "Love That Bob" would be "Three's Company". "Three's Company" featured the lead characters in situations that, in the 50s, would have been done very discreetly, yet by the 70s, were all out in the open. I see Jack Tripper as a more modern version of Bob Collins. Jack was always trying to find women, unless Mr. Roper was around, and he would love to have slept with Janet and Chrissy---if only he didn't have to live with them! :lol:

Just like Bob, Jack would always get his just desserts in the end (or, in one episode, a bowl of soup dumped on his head). But, also like Bob, you tend to like him and feel for him. That's mainly due to the great actors that played those parts.
