This was a short lived black tv show that came on the Fox network in the early 90's. The show took place in South Central, LA & it had Larenz Tate & Maia Campbell on there. Larenz Tate played in Menace II Society as O-Dog & he played in Dead Presidents. Clifton Powell was on this show as a african owner of a african store & he also played Chauncey in Menace II Society & he plays Pinky in the Friday movies with Ice Cube. He's a good actor. Jennifer Lopez also played on here working in Clifton's african store as a cashier. The dude who plays Hakeem on Moesha also played on here as Larenz's friend & Shar Jackson who played Niecy on Moesha was also on here. This show was a good black real life tv show that showed what goes on in South Central in the hood & it was a shame the show got cancelled. How long was it on if anybody remembers? I know it wasn't on long enough.

I remember it. I think it only aired like two episodes.

FOX aired the entire 13 episode run. I taped some of them.

"South Central" was a well-written, well-acted show that was pretty much doomed from the get-go.
For starters, it followed "Roc" on Tuesdays, when that once-popular show was on its downward slide, and it was broadcast at eight-thirty (instead of the more-appropriate nine o'clock).
But what really did "South Central" in was Fox's insistence on calling the show a "situation comedy" when the situations were hardly comic; anyone hoping to see the usual shuckin'-n-jivin' common on other Black programs were taken aback by it's hard-edge and brutal realism, and deserted the show in droves.
Which is a shame, really, for "South Central" was one of those programs that was truly ahead of its time.
